>they learn (fish previously caught and released become more difficult to catch again)

I mean, even in captivity it is quite obvious that they learn. You can buy the training kit here.

edit: Bonus fish love gif and pufferfish back scratch. 馃槏

Good on ya for the plants and stuff! If you haven鈥檛 thought about it yet I鈥檇 highly recommend getting live plants - best thing I could have done for my tank !! There are super low maintenance plants (like anubias and java fern) that you and your fish will love ! Just a suggestion though they make some really cool looking silk plants too :)

He鈥檒l probably need a week or so to really settle in. His color will get more vibrant as time goes on. His colors are definitely a good indication of how he鈥檚 feeling - if he鈥檚 vibrant and colorful it鈥檚 a good sign he鈥檚 happy. If he鈥檚 kind of pale, has horizontal stress stripes, fin clamping, and lethargy are all going to indicate when something may be wrong.

Most fish prefer a standard rectangular tank - this footprint allows the most natural environment with horizontal swimming space. Beware of glass surfing - swimming erratically against the glass at the surface of the water (this is a sign of stress). A round tank can totally work as long as you keep your pal in clean warm water :)

Bubble nests just mean your fish wants a lady friend - not much of an indication of happiness (bettas in terrible conditions still sometimes make bubble nests).

As far as training your fish you don鈥檛 necessarily have to do this. You can see my fish swim through a hoop in my post history :) ! I got this fish school to help me train my fish. It鈥檚 important to give your new friend time to settle before beginning this so let him adjust for a week or two. There are also some good videos on YouTube of people training bettas.

This thread reminded me of this training kit I heard about last winter shortly after getting Sara and Maybelle. Just put it on order so I'll probably get it on Monday or Tuesday. The training stick idea really appeals to me. Seem to recall some discussion of incorporating a training clicker like you'd use for horses or dogs.

Also saw an aquaponic forum post or a youtube about a swimming pool toy. I thought they were called pool bats but when I google that all the returns seem to be about little-winged mammals. Anyway, these things are brightly colored tubes, two or three feet long and two or three inches in diameter. This guy sliced some up salami style and was using them as little rafts to individually float net cups with plants on the surface of an aquarium. Ever since I saw that I've been thinking of weighing down those slices and using them as hoops at different depths for fish to investigate and swim through. Edit: Here they are.

Another half-baked idea I've had since getting the girls is using clear plastic PVC pipe in various ways to entertain the three of us. It could just start with just a little food in the middle of a six or eight-inch length of pipe but in my twisted mind, it evolves into 3D mazes with Ys and T's and such. Imagine a 3D rat maze.

And expanding on that thought. Sometimes aquaponics guys use a U-siphon to connect two tanks and maintain the same water level between them. If a bright and brave fantail goldfish was used to swimming through pipes as discussed above, wouldn't she use that U-siphon like a walking swimming bridge betwixt the tanks?

Hope this thread has legs. I'll report on the training kit when I get it.

Oh, cool, gotcha! Man, so many ideas... it'd be cool to have a 5 - 10 gallon betta fish tank. They're so curious about their surroundings and so colorful that I feel like they would keep a child's attention...

Or, if you had the space, a giant (like > 60 gallon) fancy goldfish tank. They're so peaceful to watch, and have great personalities. Plus, if you take care of them well, they live practically forever! And apparently can learn tricks

A friend of mine recently set up a 20 gallon long with some glofish for her daughter. It's pretty sweet - provided you're into the 'fake' look hahaha! For what it is, I think it looks neat, and her daughter is mesmerized.

The nice thing is that these fish are all pretty hardy :)

That's hilarious! Goldfish can really have some interesting personalities, despite what most people may think. If you think they're bound for soccer stardom, you might want to think about getting them this. ;)

Super impressive! Now you just have to teach him how to play soccer 鈿斤笍
