My method is to first read anything and everything I can get my hands on. When I do actually sit down to write, it's at my laptop. I generally need it to be quiet. I can't listen to music, or I'll just sing along. haha.
I'm a planner, so I like to whiteboard ideas before I write. I like a general idea of goals, like where my characters will end up.
I'm looking into online writing classes, too, to help me refresh my skills.
Mostly I'm scared to call myself a writer, because if I fail then what am I? But I digress. That's another topic for another time!
I added this recently as it was highly recommended to me. :) (Used will be much cheaper, and a-ok with me!)
