Not sure how scary it would be for you, but I read Relic when I was in 8th grade and I got nightmares. They made it into a crappy movie.

If he likes detective stories and thrillers, and you want a side helping of discreet scifi, I would recommend Relic. It had a very unfortunate movie adaptation (turned it into a straight-up monster movie,) but in the book, they never reveal that there is a monster until the end (up till that point, it is being investigated as though there is a cultist or serial killer in the museum.) As always, book is much better than the movie, and in truth, very, very different.

I think that we'd be pushing too hard if we started with a really heavy book for this book club, so may I present: Relic, by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. Take equal parts Jurassic Park and Alien, and set in the Museum of Natural History, and that'd be a pretty close estimation. I really enjoyed this book, but I can never find anyone else who's read it, and I'd like to spread the love.

Happy Cake Day, dear! I highly suggest The Relic by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. It's a thriller/mystery type and it's a staple in my beach tote. I've read it so many times, it's in pieces and I have to keep a rubber band around it!

There's a slew of terrible murders that take place in a history museum right before a huge exhibition opens... but something seemingly not-human. Special Agent Aloysius X. L. Pendergast, a main character, is in other books as well, so if you like it, there's always more to read!

Also, I'm a big Lee Child fan. His character, Jack Reacher, is a former MP and now kind of a wanderer who gets himself into all kinds of trouble. Echo Burning, Die Trying, and The Affair are all pretty good. I could list them all, but those are the ones off the top of my head.

What are your favorites?

Have you read Preston and Child's Relic? It's the first book in their Pendergast series, and it's definitely more horror than the rest of them, although they all have some element of horror in them.

I don't mind used books at all (actually prefer them... they just have somewhat of a magical feel <3 )

A few that I really would love to read are Ella Minnow Pea, Children of the Flames and Relic (Pendergast series)

Death Match by Lincoln Child
It's a really good book about an AI that was designed to match people up, like a dating website, but infinitely more accurate.

As an aside, Lincoln Child is one half of an amazing novelist duo who write some pretty awesome thrillers. If you wind up reading and enjoying Death Match, I would suggest looking into some of Child's and Douglas Preston's other novels (especially those that are part of the Pendergast series: FIRST and LATEST.)

Relic by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child kept me bound to that book so this might fulfill that sci-fi page-turning suspense you are looking for.

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier is an incredible book that, like Ex Machina, you were worried what might happen and what does happen is so far worse and incredible than you ever could have imagined. It also happens in a pretty isolated house as well.

Have you read the Agent Pendergast series by Preston and Child? http://www.amazon.com/Relic-Pendergast-Book-Douglas-Preston/dp/0812543262

Relic is the first, and though there was a movie made of it with Mira Sorvino, this book is waayyyy better.

My favorite book of all time is "Relic" by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child.

It's sort of sci-fi / suspense, which doesn't perfectly fit your categories, but I haven't met anyone yet who disliked it. My book has made rounds to 6 friends so far and everyone who started it couldn't put it down.
