IMO doing it with a laptop is always a bad idea. Even with this PC you should have a solid and reliable 1080p stream for $150, and get more power than almost any laptop CPU:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CV9G1BO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_b8FADb1DJ5SXW

Just wire Ethernet to it, install Team Viewer so that you can remotely connect to it if there's any problems with your stream (even from your phone), and you'll be good to go

u/Michiganders · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If it's actually going to spend it's entire life hooked up to a monitor, why not just get a desktop? All you'll probably need is a decent processor. You could just get a cheap Desktop tower and be good to go as long as you're not carrying it around.

u/whitey115 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

What does it mean when it says that this graphics card’s power consumption requires “additional 6 pin PCIe power”? I’m new to PC gaming so I apologize if this is a stupid question. Does this just mean you have to plug it into the power supply? Will this work for the power supply in this PC?

u/mustfix · 2 pointsr/buildapc

They're all connected via PCIe. That's standard.

Low Profile /Half-height (they mean the same thing) is also a standard.

Your HP 8300 is an SSF form factor? Then you're stuck with Low Profile cards. Any low profile card will fit in the remaining space within the HP 8300 SFF.

u/cirs9bka · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Yeah for that price, I guess you cant ask for too much performance. Id just want to make sure that you have right expectation for the level of performance you'll be getting. The CPU is worse than the ones that they put in a 200 dollar laptop.

I would personally get a cheap prebuilt something like this, as the CPU is miles better, and you can add like a LP card like rx 550/560 or gtx1030/1050/1050ti/1650 later if I want to game.

u/Justin_inc · 2 pointsr/computers

Here is for all new parts but doesn't include windows. But I'd recommend ebay, or Facebook marketplace. Yard sales and auctions can hide some golden deals.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qWJjLJ (414.30 at time of Posting)

You could also buy something like this and stick a low profile Nivida 1030 in it.
https://www.amazon.com/HP-Quad-Core-Windows-10-Refurbished/dp/B01CV9G1BO/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1540239753&sr=8-9&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=computer&dpPl=1&dpID=41eoh2tOwGL&ref=plSrch

u/TDiniz · 2 pointsr/farmingsimulator

Should be under the HP name, https://www.amazon.ca/HP-Quad-Core-Windows-10-Refurbishd/dp/B01CV9G1BO

I wouldn't recommend getting a small form factor, but they are cheaper, and they will fit up to a GT 1050 Low Profile(you have to specifically get a low profile model), other wise a GT 1030 will drop right in, you just need to swap the plate on the back of it with the low profile one they all come with.

u/ksuwildkat · 2 pointsr/buildapc

In theory you can do all that with a $55 Raspberry Pi 4. In absolute fact you can do all that with a $50 used Dell Optiplex. Dont want to risk a sketchy craigs list buy? Amazon Renewed. Here is an HP 8300 Elite Small Form Factor Desktop Computer, Intel Core i5-3470 3.2GHz Quad-Core, 8GB RAM, 500GB SATA, Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit, USB 3.0, Display Port for $160. Thats a complete system including Win10 Pro. Spend another $50 on an SSD and you have a damn good "office/browsing" system.

I understand the name of the subreddit and everything, but if you're going for a low budget build that involves a GTX 1050 Ti I'd grab one of them small form factor computers off Amazon for $190, throw a small GTX 1050 Ti in there for another $150 or so and call it good. It has been demonstrated that the 240W power supply can hang, and being business models that were made to run 24/7 I'd bank on it.

I've built two overkill computers in the past four years and wish I went this route, honestly.

u/zeirodeadlock · 1 pointr/tf2

Another idea, purchase one of these computers and slot a 1050 or a 1050ti. She would run tf2 great.

u/Vociferix · 1 pointr/PleX

I'm looking to build/buy a server solely for DVR and Live TV. It will not be storing anything long term. I have cable in a remote location that I would like to be able to use through Plex. I already have a normal Plex server that is not remote. So I just need a server that can meet the minimum requirements (with some breathing room) of running Plex with 2 simultaneous 720p live tv streams plus record 1 live show/movie/etc. Additionally, it will need to run an OpenVPN client to connect to my NAS, where it will send recordings in post-processing. I'm planning to run it on Ubuntu Server for minimal overhead. This machine will be used for nothing else.

My question is whether this pre-built is capable of this. It has a 3rd gen i5, and the whole machine is under $200.

I'm open to other suggestions, including building a server. If the above is not going to cut it, I would like suggestions on a CPU that will be able to do this so I can better direct my search. Given the rather limited and unique requirements, I wasn't sure what kind of load will be given to the CPU. All I know is that a Raspberry Pi 3 is not good enough. I had one I wasn't using and gave it a try, but it was just not able to transcode fast enough.

Thanks in advance!

If I am looking for a new pc, and I don't need a high performing or gaming pc, would purchasing a refurbished tower from amazon get me the most bang for my buck or would building my own be more cost effective?

This is close to what I am thinking about purchasing.

Looking to put together a very basic, budget desktop. First question, is this RX 560 being sold on Amazon the version with 896 Steam Processors, or 1024 Stream Processors? I can't find any information on the store page. Also, would I be able to easily put it into this desktop? Thank you!

Will putting this SSD and GPU into that computer be a problem? Is it inefficient?

u/Tylertooo · 1 pointr/buildapc

Take a look at this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CV9G1BO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9g66Ab6BXHKBW
That CPU is 50% faster than the 4130 and it's a certified refurbished, rather than second hand.

I do not have this one yet, but I am going to get it soon. The only part that I don't really know about is the graphics card, Intel HD Graphics 2500, and I couldn't find anything that could explain it to me in a way that I understand. The other parts of it should be able to run things, but considering the price there most likely is a weakness (graphics card?, refurbished).

u/llamaAPI · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'm not sure. My PC is a hand-me-down from my dad. Here's a pic:

http://i.imgur.com/EbfYrYr.jpg

You can zoom in a check it out. I don't really understand what anything in there means. I just assume that because it says total ouput 320w that should be it.

Curiously, I now decided to google where it says model. It brings me up these 3:

https://www.amazon.com/DPS-320NB-1A-ELITE-12VDC-POWER-SUPPLY/dp/B01BK2RXJ2

https://www.amazon.com/Eathtek-CFH-0320EWWA-611483-001-611484-001-Compatible/dp/B00ZQWOUEO

https://www.amazon.com/HP-CFH-0320EWWA-DPS-320NB-611483-001-611484-001/dp/B00CQAUN90

I don't know how similar these 3 are, but the 1st and last one says something about the elite 8200. I searched this on amazon (link I used if you want to check it out) and what would you know, that's exactly my PC! Well, not quite exactly... the specs don't really match up. PSU 1 also said something about 8300 so I checked it out and damn, that's literally it.

Link to my PC

I don't know if it's exactly it, but most things match up. I have the i5 3470 @ 3.2GHz, 8GB of RAM, and it came with Windows 7 Pro (I upgraded to 10 pro if it's relevant).

If you check out the specs below, it says Power Supply: 240W Max. I don't know if this the "free" remaining energy I could put to use on a bigger GPU? Maybe the PSU is different? Like I said, the actual PSU is the one on the first pic.

Additional things that could mess up how much energy my system uses:

  1. I unplugged the optical drive (the things that reads CDs)

  2. I unplugged the hard drives (it seemed that there were two connected functioning as one, I don't really understand it. I think it's called an "array").

  3. I use an SSD. Adata 480GB.

You think I could just remove my GT 630 and put in something else? How far could I go? 750ti? 1050? 1060?

An absolute steal when it comes to what you pay vs what you get. The only real downside is the cosmetic condition of the case (might be a bit scuffed)

I'd highly recommend it for almost anyone, though

u/sonsofaureus · 1 pointr/DIY_tech

I don't know what followliker does, but if it's a program, you might have trouble running it on a NAS but I might be wrong.
If you're ok with a refurbished PC, an i5 desktop with windows 10 license can be had for ~$220 on amazon. It should be plenty powerful enough to run Plex, serve files, run backups, Xbox media center, some light gaming, social media automation software, etc.
Couple it with a wireless touchpad/keyboard + a DisplayPort to HDMI cable, the PC can be hooked up directly to your PC and serve as a home-media PC, so plex would only be used for streaming to your mac or portable devices.
Sharing a folder on the PC and accessing it with mac over home network is trivial. PC only has about 500GB though, and external USB HD would be required to expand capacity. (The refurb PC is a small form factor, and probably won't have extra drive bays for storage) And it uses more power than a NAS. 24/7 use might also be an issue, but for that, NAS or server would be required.
I have an i7 workstation tower I run like that - it's not constantly used, but it's almost always on. Been running fine for years - I would just make sure it's not inside a cabinet for ventilation. The whole set up can be had for less than ~$300 (without the USB HDs)
A good backup system always includes off-site (ie cloud backup) anyway. I would suggest looking into Amazon Cloud Drive for that.

I'm planning on getting a new PC for my parents and have parts picked out, but saw some comments from people saying that it's good to just buy prefab instead and slap my own SSD into it in that situation. Is this a viable option? I'm especially eyeing this one: https://www.amazon.com/HP-Quad-Core-Windows-10-Refurbished/dp/B01CV9G1BO/

They don't really do anything intensive on the computer, just internet browsing, file storage, text editing, etc. Going with that one will save about $100 on what I was planning on building, but I haven't had a prefab pc for I'm not sure how many years. I'm a little nervous to grab something like that compared to something I built myself. What would you guys recommend?

Why are you looking at a 7100 system?...

HP 8300 Elite Small Form Factor Desktop Computer, Intel Core i5-3470 3.2GHz Quad-Core, 8GB RAM, 500GB SATA, Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit, USB 3.0, Display Port (Certified Refurbished) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CV9G1BO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_KmG1Ab8D7ZK0M

Quick look shows the i5 being better or on part for a total system cost of about $200. Think you just weren't looking for the right thing.

Also feeds into your DDR3 argument, by the time you buy so much old hardware you might as well get a full refurbished system and save some more money getting it together.

It's an HP, but already it's still better than my current laptop and cheaper too. I'll just have to install a new graphics card with a HDMI port. I haven't really been in the PC building game in over ten years, and I can't believe how cheap things with decent specs have gotten.

Specs are

It’s $185. I’m not really trying to spend more than $250.

I just want something that I can use for Apple Music, do some excel spreadsheets, basic things. Not really for gaming what so ever. Just everyday tasks when I don’t want to use my lap top.(which is 5+ years old) i3 2gb ram, 500gb storage. I just use it as a notebook at work. Watch Netflix go on the internet.

Already have a dB power keyboard, and a basic laser mouse. My monitor is a asus mx279h. So I don’t need anything else.

Any thoughts or comments help thanks !

I forgot to add. I have a good friend that works for CDW and said he can get me a solid slate drive and ram for pretty cheap if needed

The monitor seemed like it was brand new when we got it, not too long after we got it though, it started showing symptoms of a black screen and a few lines across the screen, now it displays it constantly and the colors of the lines are brighter and blocking the Windows home. I’ve heard of other users having this problem and even tried to switch cables but that did nothing for them or me. I’m not sure if this monitor was damaged when it arrived because it’s an LCD monitor and it says things like keeping it away from sunlight, moisture and rain. Also says to keep it in range of a room with -4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit which I have done. We might have to get a replacement if I can’t figure anything else out by tomorrow. This is ridiculous.

Sorry I should've mentioned that already. I was hoping to use PCSX2 for my ps2 games and ppsspp for the psp games.

I've never had a computer that could begin to run Dolphin but maybe I'm aiming too high for my budget.

I was thinking about getting this refurbished pc and upgrading some parts but I don't know what I'm doing. Just read through some reviews and forums of some people who beefed that computer up to run some games but they didn't mention the sorts of things I'm aiming for.

u/Aitro · -1 pointsr/gaming

If you build a computer, then you have to install the Operating System, drivers etc. Pre-built computers like Dell and HP, come with that already pre-installed. Something that everyone in this post is failing to mention. Yes, maybe it is "easy" but you still have to go through the annoying process of installing everything. If i was 11, and I got a bunch of computer parts, i'd be kinda mad, when I just want to play games. Maybe when she is older, she can build her own computer or upgrade parts in it, start things off easy at least. I know STEM is important and all but...

I'm not the best at picking computers, but here are some options at least and not a jumbled mess of random parts. Most computers you are going to find in your price range are going to be refurbished.
