Wow 140 comments, and no professional advice. Well lets talk about these "mouth ulcers" or "canker sores". Really all of these fall under apthous ulcers. No they arent herpes. Herpes generally strike the keratinzed tissues, such as lip and attached gingival (what you'd call gums and hard palate) while apthous ulcers generally strike soft tissues (such as under the tongue and the cheek). Unfortunately we do not understand the exact mechanism that causes them and therefor its hard to prevent. I see many home remedies here that can help treat the discomfort but be careful with anything with alcohol and peroxide containing rinses because they can actually prolong the problem. Yes there is a bacteriologic component to these ulcers but generally its the bodies response to the bacteria and not the bacteria itself that is the problem. One of the best things that is OTC is Rincinol. No I am not a shill for this product, but it has done wonders for my patients. I know hypochondria is a predisposed condition on Reddit but if you get them frequently or they become large in size (say bigger than a dime) you should talk to your dentist about it because it could be more serious than just stress.

I have suffered from canker sores my whole life, and after trying everything I finally have found a solution! When I feel one starting to form (after I have bit my cheek or whatever, before it's full blown), I rinse with Rincinol (sold at Walgreens) after I brush my teeth, before going to bed, so it has all night to work. Usually doing this for a night or two will nip that canker sore in the bud! Also, there's a medication called Debacterol that's only dispensed by dentists, which cauterizes the nerves chemically. Pretty painful, but takes care of the canker sore. But I have found that Rincinol usually does the job for me. Good luck!
