Here is a good start to get the general history. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnamese_Cambodians

As I commented elsewhere in the thread, the stressful history extended long before the KR although it certainly hit a low point then as far as murder.

There’s loads of academic stuff like this https://www.jstor.org/stable/3480966?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents

Also the excellent book River of Time by John Swain discusses the issue quite a bit but is is an extremely sad read. https://www.amazon.com/River-Time-Memoir-Vietnam-Cambodia/dp/0425168050

There is tons more regarding the history. Just google.

Regarding AIDS, it was the presence of UNTAC forces that created a huge demand for prostitutes. Many Vietnamese girls were smuggled into Cambodia. The demand for young (I mean very young) Vietnamese girls lasted long after the 1993 mission.

I met many post 2000 while I was working on some anti HIV stuff. I had never met anyone with AIDS until then. I had met many HIV positive people but I was never face-to-face with a person who would soon die. And it was a teenage girl. Absolutely heartbreaking.

The point of all this is not to blame or incite anger against the Cambodians. It’s just a very complicated situation with years of difficulty and sorrow with ethnic Vietnamese from the border provinces caught up in it.

To me the western delta is the most beautiful place in the world. But it’s history is so heavy.
