The chemical paint removers might actually be safer too. Old woodwork is likely to have lead paint on it. Sanding will turn it into dust that can be inhaled and will settle throughout the flat.

There are cheaper ones available but this is a high quality tool.
Also pallet knife / scraper... nothing fancy cheapest you can get and this kind of thing (below) will really help you with the shape of that frame (make it so much easier) -

but you don't need all the triangle attachments, sure you could find cheaper also not sure the USD - GBP but that one looks expensive.
They do get gummed up as you go with heated and then dried paint - so use a wood chisel to clean, if you have one or another pallet knife or even the widest screw driver you have and do it often as it will make it easier as you make your way round.
