Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 fisheye, fantastic lens for the money. It's relatively sharp past f/5 and offers great contrast and color. There is also a cheaper version that won't meter and uses a manual aperture ring for $50(usd) less.

Here is a shot I took with my friend's Rokinon 8mm on my D7000. As you can see from the EXIF data I used a version that doesn't meter, so it's a little tricky to get exposure correct at first.

C'mon, don't be a pansy. Just go all the way and get a Rokinon 8mm F3.5 fisheye for $250.

More seriously, I've used the Tokina 11-16 and it was awesome. Here's my favorite shot with it

I understood what you were saying. I was just pointing out that he was also incorrect because that same lens is sold under a variety of different focal lengths.

Samyang builds lenses and other companies re-brands them. Opekta, Samyang, Falcon, Rokinon, Bower, Series 1, Vivitar, and probably more. They're all mechanically the same but have slight variations in the build (like the rubber on the focusing ring). People just market them with skewed numbers.

For the most part, it's all been fixed (focal lengths are all 8mm), but last year when I was looking, the numbers were all over the place. I'm sure you can still find the older lenses with different focal lengths on ebay.

ah awesome. That's probably it. interesting. i've read about the adapters but never bothered to buy them. I've been meaning to try fisheye myself and thinking of just buying a cheap lens. the rokinon 8mm f/3.5 is supposedly pretty good, and by lens standards, cheap.

you have the composition right. good shot.

Well for the price of a 600d you could get a 35mm 1.8 and a Rokinon 8mm fisheye. You would have tons of fun with those two lenses.

The Rokinon 8mm fisheye is well-regarded, and is also sold as Samyang/Bower.

There are screw-on "fisheye adapters" available on Ebay in that price range, however image quality is severely degraded and not very "fishy". If you want a real fisheye experience this lens is the cheapest on the market.

Fisheye lenses are cool, but very rarely used for the price. A better gift, in my opinion, would be a 50mm f/1.8 AF lens. It's compact, has an eminently useful focal length, and lets in a lot of light. Used, they go for a little over 100.

I have the Samyang 8mm which is supposed to be the same than the Vivitar 7mm (don't know about the 1mm difference), you can AMA :)
For info, Vivitar = Samyang = Rokinon, you can find that lens cheaper (and just under the 300$ cap) on amazon.

Do not forget this is a manual lens:

  • no autofocus is no big deal, when opened at F4 - best not open more for max sharpness - you can just focus to 1m and everything is sharp from 30 cm to infinity and beyond

  • manual exposure is a bit trickier, but I personally enjoy having to think before shooting :)
