They use a good bit of energy, and hum quite loudly. They work quickly though and as long as your pump cycles your water quickly enough, every bit of it will get a dose of the UV, killing the spores and bacteria easily enough, in 30 minutes to an hour.

You should repeat now and then to kill off anything new that's popped up.

This is the one I use: UV

Ok, so it's basically a sediment and carbon filter, with UV, for $1500? Seems really expensive, but obviously nice to have in the right situation. I was looking to see if maybe it also did reverse osmosis (that would make it pretty cool) but I don't see any mention of that.

I forgot to mention that I also got a UV option, for use in the 55 gallon water barrels. This was before I found out about the chlorine maker gadget, but still it's always nice to have options. Obviously depends on having power, but I have the Honda generators and 60 gallons of gas put aside so that shouldn't be a problem for a while. This thing is made for fish tanks, but if it works for fish then I guess it might work for me... hope I never have to find out! :P

Hey, if we're blue-skying, then how about the Katadyn Survivor 35 - it lets you turn SEA water into drinkable water. Pretty cool (and pretty darned expensive too)...

Only thing I really would need help figuring out is to keep co2 levels down, so a vent system, I’m sure I could figure it out maybe some type of good system with pvc with a few 90s to prevent light down the top
