Russian America: The Great Alaskan Venture
I picked a copy up at Whole Foods of all places. It looked interesting, and for a buck I couldn't pass it up. I was not disappointed. I think that everything I was taught about Alaska in grade school can be summed up in one sentence. "The foolish Russians sold it to us for a steal." What I liked most about it was at times it read like a novel. We learn of an ill fated romance with a San Francisco girl named Maria de la Concepcion Arguello. We meet the Hawaiian King Kamehameha. Napoleon even pops his head in a few times.

Russian America is one of the best books I have ever read. You can probably find a copy at title wave in anchorage for less than online
