Its hard to beat amazon for comprehensive reviews. I am looking at the Saitek x52 Pro. http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Flight-System-Controller/dp/B000LQ4HTS/ref=pd_sim_e_8
And of course the Rift.
So many gearheads that have compared different versions brands of products and then given detailed reviews, and then the reviews are reviewed by the wide community highlighting the "Most helpful" reviews.
The other option is there is probably some good sites focused on MS Flight Sim, I know guys that have built replica boeng cockpits in their shed. So that might be a richer look into yokes and the such. however my budget for stick is under 150 so amazon was my destination. In the mean time waiting for the RIFT to be released, I am going to construct my own IR head tracking system to be attached to my headset, which I plan to use in Arma III
I feel like a lot of the perceived joystick-superiority-complex comes from people seeing joystick owners talking about stuff like the X-52pro (http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Flight-System-Controller/dp/B000LQ4HTS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368513666&sr=8-1&keywords=x52+pro), which is obviously out of many people's desired price range.
But the fact of the matter is that something like this (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368513643&sr=8-1&keywords=joystick) will work just fine - in fact, they were giving some of those exact joysticks out as part of the recruit-your-friends promo, so they're definitely planning to make it playable with those. And at ~$25, its even significantly cheaper than a console controller.
So although us joystick-enthusiasts who want to build sim cockpits and use pedals and all that aren't going to be talking about the $30 joysticks, they are there and perfectly functional, so there is no reason that the general population of the game can't have them if they want.
Not to say you can't go the gamepad route if you'd like, just wanted it clear that going the joystick route doesn't need to have the high cost of entry that some people seem to be perceiving.
VR treadmills are far from consumer ready, same with controllers like Delta Six. Maybe in 5 years.
If you want great peripherals for the Rift, what you get is:
You should be able to afford 2x VR PC + 2x Rift + 2x each ofthese peripherals.

I ordered an X52 Pro. Only $20 over your budget.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LQ4HTS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The Saitek X52 and X52 Pro are extremely popular from what I've seen. I use a regular X52. They don't have quite as many hats as the Warthog, but you can use the pinky switch as a shift button to double the functions on each hat.
Buying new, you can find a regular X52 for around $80, and a Pro for around $140. You can always get better prices if you're willing to scour the internet for used ones. I've heard about people getting a regular X52 for around 50 bucks, which is a great deal in my opinion.
This profile is what most people base theirs on, I think. The link has detailed instructions and a diagram showing what's mapped to what. The rotaries on the throttle are unmapped - I use one of them for FOV zoom, which has worked well so far. It's really useful for gun runs.
I've also heard people recommend the Saitek X45, but I have no experience with it or any other modern joysticks. I only got back into flight sims very recently.
> and pretty similar to the in-game one for Elite
For anyone interested, the one in-game is heavily based on the X52 Pro.
It's a X52 Pro. ($160~)
I'm using it with my setup aswell and am quite happy with it, but I can't compare since this is my first HOTAS.
Saitek X52 Pro $125 USD
Regular price is $160. Ends 3 hrs 45 min from time of this post.
Aaaand it's over.
I have the Saitek X52 Pro. That works pretty awesome!
I use this with the DK2. Pretty much anything similar will work as they match the controls in the game very well.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LQ4HTS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Good thing when you're looking around. If you set your position correctly when you lean forward, your head with hit your stick at the same time your virtual head does. Pretty cool (press F12 to re-center)
Do you use a joystick?
I bought a refurbished Logitech 3D Pro for $11 when I first really started getting into KSP. Note the throttle switch on the far right in that pic (it faces towards you when you use it,) which is perfect for minute adjustments to your burn. I nearly wept the first time I nudged it up and down and saw the in-game throttle indicator sliding back and forth as I did.
If I hadn't slowly made the transition to in-game control panels (like mechjeb and Lazor,) or if there were any other promising flight/space sims coming through the pipes in the near future, I'd consider investing in something like this for the off-board throttle alone.
In case you ever wanna switch to the dark side, I've posted a breakdown of the current hotas situation on the vive subreddit before, lemme see if I can find it.
Found it.
The cheap end would be the T-Flight Hotas X ($50).
On the cheaper mid range side, either the Saitek x52 ($140), or the Saitek x52 Pro ($180)
On the more pricey side of the mid range I can suggest the Saitek x55/x56 ($250)
Top of the Line would be the Thrustmaster Warthog ($400)
Since then thrustmaster also released the T.16000M ($130) which as far as I know was made in communication with Frontier so it should be a pretty good fit for Elite.
he linked to the x52 pro which is closer to $150.
http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Flight-System-Controller/dp/B000LQ4HTS
I'm personally a huge fan of the Saitek X52 Pro -- it's comfortable, adjustable, holds its zero without recalibration, and has enough buttons and analog inputs for anything. But I'll admit, I am also biased towards that stick because I learned the Saitek DirectOutput SDK and make good use of it. The downside is it's about 3 times your budget, but if you are really getting into flight sims, it's worth the investment (in my opinion).
In your price range the Cyborg F.L.Y.5 looks like an excellent value. Saitek knows how to cram a lot of buttons on a joystick while still keeping it comfortable to use (partially because their sticks are adjustable). Total honesty: I have not used that particular stick, but I am a fan of the Cyborg line.
I also pick up cheap used joysticks at Goodwill for LAN party spares, and one I came across is the Thrustmaster Top Gun Afterburner, which seems to be a very similar design to the T. Flight HOTAS X. I wanted to like it, but the input precision was terrible -- in a combat flight sim, aiming was very difficult. However, I will admit that probably has more to do with being a beat-up old Goodwill find than anything else.
I've also come across several SideWinder Precision Pro sticks, which are surprisingly solid performers for their age. They will need recalibration every time you plug them in, but then the precision is pretty good. You have to be careful that it's USB-compatible (with pin adapter) since it is visually identical to an older model that is GamePort-only.
The Cyborg EVO is pretty nice too. I'd avoid the much older Cyborg 3D line because the input jitters a bit when you try to keep it centered, but I think the Cyborg 3D Gold (2001) was the last Saitek stick with that issue.
tl;dr: X52 Pro or Cyborg
It works great with this: http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Flight-System-Controller/dp/B000LQ4HTS?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
Look at the x52 or x52 pro.
This one (the pro version) is on sale for $129, regularly $159. :)

I would suggest the Saitek X52 Joystick.
Most people I know like it, I don't own it myself but I plan to buy the Pro version of it.
You can be okay with a mouse and a joystick. I use a Thrustmaster Hotas X ; which has the added bonus of being ps3 compatible. Others like the Cyborg F.L.Y 5
There are other joysticks around and we can help with keymappings for any of them. I'll tell you right now that the HOTAS X is a nice joystick, but only have 1 hat button is a big weakness for it. Other than that, just check reviews and get one you think will work for you.
If you want more help choosing, just make more posts. And if you are interested we can teach you how to fly even without a joystick.
PS: the gold standard for sticks right now is Saitek x52 ; but that's out side your price range
There is the X52 Pro which is generally considered superior in every way to the X52 standard you are looking at.
If you're new to HOTAS and don't want to drop that kind of cash, the T-Flight HOTAS X is $100 less and a big fan favorite as it is less expensive, but still a great option. Also, don't let the picture fool you because the base separates so both the stick and throttle can be placed on either side of your keyboard.
What about a comparison with the [Saitek X52 pro?] (http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Flight-System-Controller/dp/B000LQ4HTS/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_1_1) ... roughly 3 times the price, is it worth it?
edit: sorry kinda off topic as it is over 100$ but you can find used ones for below...
I have a OC/760 I am about to sell. But see I have to flip that card so I can afford this for ED!

"Damn Vr you is expensive!"
DCS: F-86, a good HOTAS, a good display, TrackIR.
I got one of these refurbished (like new) off of ebay for about $100.

If I were you, I'd use an xbox controller or something until you can really get the stick you want. The Keyboard and mouse controls are pretty great too, I used them until I got my HOTAS. I don't have much experience with the Thrustmaster stufff, but the X52 Pro is a dream!

X52 is the go to for just above casual enthusiast level, after that you're looking at hardcore sim flight sticks for 300+ dollars.

Shows that the price is still $139.99 on amazon, but out of stock. Just wait for Amazon to get more in stock, and it will say "Shipped and sold by Amazon" instead of by "pcrush-outlet"
It's on sale currently for $177 over at Amazon. Seems the price has increased lately.
Edit: This one (not the "pro" model) is going for $149 at newegg.
For the main ship, probably. In the shuttlecraft at the start of Into Darkness though it was the X52 Pro.

Saw a couple of people demoing Elite with OculusRift Dev2 and using this stick. Seems like a great compromise and looks badass.
My patience has paid off!! X52 Pro dropped to $146.92
Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X is $34.99 as well!
I'd advise steering well clear of the X52 (pro or std). The hardware itself is fairly decent, with a ton of buttons and switches. The rudder 'lock' is essentially non-functional, which would be a pain if I was using pedals.
The drivers and software completely ruin the stick though. Constant flickering inputs, having to manually load a profile that disables the thumb mouse every-time I start my computer (otherwise my mouse continually goes to the top of the screen), causing other USB devices to freak out, two non-functioning buttons on the throttle... The USB driver issues it has are incredibly bad. A lot of people (including myself) have had their compouters completely black screen multiple times after plugging the stick in (it got better after upgrading to windows 10). Take a look at some of the critical Amazon reviews - in hindsight I would have saved up for the Warthog.

Cheaper on amazon, only $130. I am planning on picking one up after trying my brother in laws
Yes, I believe you can use VATSIM with the steam edition.
Which joystick depends a lot on how much you want to pay. I'll paste links in ascending order of price for sticks which are reasonably recommendable.
I currently have a Saitek X-52 Pro which is absolutely fantastic (especially for the price).

yeah I don't unplug anything from the back of the computer.. but if having the one cord running into the HOTAS bothered you even when it is put away you can use a USB extention cord that puts it in an easier to reach place once you are ready to pack it up.

and yes it is worth every dollar. 100% would never use anything else to play the game with now
grab an x52 pro. I fly CAS and aircav with mine and I'm literally using it right now to pilot a long distance survey run in Elite Dangerous
X52. It's literally the joystick that's in the game.
Or the more expensive version, X52 Pro.
I haven't tried the Pro so I reccomend you research that one.
hotas is excellent in ED for immersion as your character model moves the stick and throttle accordingly. The controls in game are modeled after the saitek x52 pro I believe.
Then
and
I wanted to do this and this but $270 is a bit much for immersion and sucking.

Pro version is 139 with free shipping on Amazon.
I'm very excited for both Elite:Dangerous and Star Citizen however I'm waiting on putting my money in SC since it doesn't look like it's coming out for AT LEAST another 2 years. So I pre-ordered E:D since it will be available soon (less than a week) and got a Saitek X55 Rhino which is kinda pricey but looks (and actually is) very nice in terms of quality and functionality. Sure it's made out of plastic and for $200 that's apparently outrageous but it feels very solid and not like it's some cheap knock-off.
There's also the Saitek X52 as well as the X52 Pro which are a bit cheaper and are getting very good reviews as well. Also the Logitech 3D Pro that apparently served some people for AGES without breaking (but that's just the joystick)
Amazon has them for $139 right now. $30 off. Best price that I have seen.
I was looking at getting the X52 Pro as a joystick but before I could buy, it skyrocketed in price. I don't know if I want to spend that much now, but might have too. Therefore, I was wondering if the X-55 Rhino might be a better HOTAS for that price or if the X52 is just as good as the X52 pro and what the differences are between the standard and pro.
im looking at buying the saitek x52. from what i hear it is a great hotas and i like my hands far apart. plus it looks very similar to the one in game (did i mention i like role playing the game?0 XD
I bought myself the Saitek X52 Pro Flight System Controller. the throttle is butter smooth, it also has suction cups on both the stick and throttle so they does not slide. Also, the dead zone on the stick is almost nothing. For the throttle, It feels like there is no dead zone.

Re the PS2 cable: I don't know if the cable is the same as a PS2 standard cable, I recall giving away my old X52 to a mate and giving him a standard PS2 cable but he said it was a different pin-out, so buying spares from an electronic store / PC store may be an option if you modify the wiring and use the original connectors. You could also look at making a base plate for both the Stick and Throttle with guides to secure the ends of the cable. There's lots of options you can explore.

No, one of these
Roughly $6000.
The biggest ticket item was the GTX690 ($999), and the three monitors ($324 each). We have about $1600 into the rest of the PC (512g SSD, 3.9ghz Intel Core i7-3770K, 16gb 1600mhz RAM).
The Saitek components are pretty reasonable, the FIP displays add up though. Here is a table of my spreadsheet, it doesn't include the cost of the GTX690, or the PC, or a few misc things like the keyboard.

Any comments, concerns, warnings, or advice? Thanks again!
What are you looking for in terms of flight control hardware? What kind of aircraft do you want to fly in? Also, what's your budged?
If you just want an inexpensive stick that covers all the basics, get a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Sets you back only ~$26 and will probably serve you well for a long time.
If you want to go for a realistic experience, I'd recommend getting the following hardware (ordered by importance, obviously subjective):
The Warthog is insanely good, but also insanely expensive.
If you want to fly general aviation aircraft, I recommend looking at the CH Yoke or the Saitek Pro Flight Yoke. Both are solid, affordable yokes that will make for a pretty good experience. If you want to get serious, keep an eye on the Iris Dynamics Force Feedback Yoke. It's not out yet, but it promises to be an affordable simulation-grade yoke with realistic force feedback - Keep in mind that "affordable" means ~$800 in this case.
As far as addons go, I unfortunately only have experience with FSX. For FSX there are some addons that I consider essentials:
Sorry for not being able to recommend any X-Plane addons. I haven't tried that sim and have absolutely no experience with it.
I hope you found something useful in this wall of text. Anyways, welcome back to the hobby, have fun! :)
Edit: Swapped out the video with one that fits better.
That's the most ridiculous build I've ever seen. Wow. Luckily I can get a beginner HOTAS setup for fairly cheap.
Hmmm...the X-52 Pro isn't too expensive. Lower priority though I think for me. Probably get the new NVIDIA Shield first for our "dumb" Smart TV (running joke in our family 'cos it's a cheap Smart TV and actually isn't very smart :p) in the lounge, turn it into a proper Smart TV. Already have a Steam Link + Steam Controller for the downstairs TV. Question: what's that shorter, fatter one with the screen for? Throttle by the look of it? https://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Flight-System-Controller/dp/B000LQ4HTS
The non-PRO is like $8 cheaper right? If so, might as well get the PRO. You're already spending $150, might as well spend $158 for the extra build quality.

edit: Just realized I forgot keyboard and mouse. Honestly I would have just recommended something you can find at Walmart anyway. Throw a KBM on this build, stop by Walmart, or head over to /r/mechanicalkeyboards. Up to you.
