Based on recommendations here, I got the [Samsung 32GB Fit](Samsung MUF-32AB/AM FIT Plus 32GB - 200MB/s USB 3.1 Flash Drive https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D7SX9NS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sxN3BbBBT9YH6). Buy 2 of them, so if one goes bad, swap it out then repair the messed up one.
Yeah, I got this guy:

It's specifically marketed as a high temp/durable drive.
Hey OP, I tried this exact usb drive pictured and it did not work, but I did buy this and it worked perfectly. Some usb drives are unable to get enough power to boot up
Autobleem. Hope that helps. Check out Mad little pixel on YouTube as well, he has some good tutorials on how to hack the Ps classic.
I run FreeNAS on an HP DL380 Gen9 server and I just use a Samsung 32GB flash drive to host FreeNAS so all of my storage can be dedicated to storage. If you have a USB3.0 port on the device, this is a very cheap ($9.00) and simple simple way to do it.
Zero issues (1 month+) with this Samsung 32GB. $9.

No issues here with this Samsung drive and "lock on walk away" enabled.
I have been using this usb splitter on my model 3: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013XGK53E/, its been working very well for me. Also make sure you use a fast usb drive ( I use https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D7SX9NS/ and have had no issues). Don't think you need the data blocker that other people have noted, but it definitely does not hurt.
The thought on a microsd is that this is a pretty low form factor and not likely to put any stress on the port of fall out.
I suppose something like the Samsung Fit could do similar though.

I'm Primarily apprehensive about cheap flash drives as I've had bad luck with them failing and becoming unreadable.
I considered a SSD, but I'm using one of these Samsung Fit 32gb with the understanding that it will eventually die and I will need to spend $10 every year to replace it.

You could even buy one of these too boot off of. I experimented with it for a few days. Its not quite as fast as the SSD but works much better than the SD card.
