I used to have the same USB drive as you, and it also gave me the same error message. Unfortunately, USB drives aren't really meant for constant re-writing, and wear out pretty quickly. What you need is a high endurance microSD card and USB adapter. The "high endurance" cards are designed specifically for dashcams and are made to handle constant re-writing. After upgrading to the high endurance card, I have perfect quality videos with no more error messages.

I'm pretty sure it's not possible to format drives from an iPad or iPhone. I use GUIFormat on Windows to format drives to FAT32.

No, but it’s fast enough. If you have WiFi connectivity where you park, it will automatically copy all of your clips to a file share on your home network. So, you don’t have to remove the drive from your car to review the clips.

If you’re interested I can share the other parts that are needed to build this. It offers several other advantages too, such as repairing the drive automatically if the FS becomes corrupt, can sync Music to it from a windows share, can send Pushover/AWS/IFTTT notifications when copying/done, etc.

Edit: You also have the option of creating a WiFi access point so that you can connect to it and view the clips on your smart phone while away from home.

For anyone wondering I ordered This MicroSD card and this Adapter after I had these issues and it has been working perfect ever since.

Something to do with the write speeds of the MicroSD cards being much better than the flash drives. I wish I still had the link to the website someone basically dedicated to testing all the different drives/sticks/cards but this was a suggested combo and it has been phenomenal.

I would recommend not getting a thumb drive. It seems most have issues with standard thumb drives. I would recommend a SD card designed for dash cams. This is what I bought:

Samsung PRO Endurance 128GB Micro SDXC Card with Adapter - 100MB/s U1 (MB-MJ128GA/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B984HJ5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_aX4GDbKBSP7X0

With this adapter:

I’ve seen other folks on here prefer just getting a solid state external hard drive too, someone else would probably have a recommendation for that though.

I’m running the Samsung Pro Endurance 128gb. When looking for a SD card you need to make sure to buy the right type. I did a lot of research and a lot of sites recommended this card. When looking for an SD card for a dash cam you need to make sure they are endurance cards. These cards can handle the constant read and writes and high/low temperatures.

u/maxnreba · 3 pointsr/TeslaModel3

I have been using this Samsung PRO Endurance 128GB Micro SDXC Card card since April with no issues at all. I selected it after researching the best memory cards for dashcams. It needs to be a “high endurance” Type.

I've been pretty happy with Blackvue cams. I've owned the DR650S-2CH and DR750S-2CH, both of which include a model of rear-facing camera you can mount internally (e.g., Lyft/Uber driver) or on the back window, or one that can mount to the cab of your truck, or has IR LEDs to see in the car at night. They've worked well, and the hardwiring kits are pretty nice with options to turn off automatically after X hours or when the battery reaches a certain voltage.

My DR650S eventually died, I think due to electrical issues my car's ECU was causing. Most of the other electronics started going wonky until the ECU gave up the ghost and caused an explosion in the intake manifold, cracking half the engine. Until it fried, it was very reliable as long as the cheap microSD card I was using needed to be reformatted, and the videos it recorded were pretty decent.

On my current car I've installed the DR750S just recently. This time instead of the Power Magic Pro hardwiring kit, I decided to go with the Power Magic Battery Pack. The battery's hardwired into the electrical system on a circuit that only has power when the car's running, and I placed the battery in the glove compartment so that I can use the USB ports on it if needed for like a Wi-Fi hotspot. The 750S has been fantastic and the video quality's great. Just gotta take the time to adjust the accelerometer sensitivity and whatnot.

I also picked up a polarized lens filter which fit both models, and that helps cut down on the glare and helps keep the video from getting too bright. I also picked up much better microSD cards for the 750 to avoid the issues I had on the 650. The only real complaints I've had with them are around the apps used to connect to the camera (both desktop and mobile), and the Wi-Fi support. Basically, both units only have 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and can only support network SSIDs and passwords of up to a certain length. I have the Wi-Fi access point closest to the garage transmitting a second network just for the dashcam to connect to as a result. The apps feel very much like someone's one-day project when you use them, but more frustrating is that you can only sign-in on one device at a time. So if you sign-in to desktop, it'll sign you out of the mobile app, and vice-versa.

I use the products below and they work perfectly for my flow! I plug the reader directly into my phone from the car and the app allows me to review videos right away. This flow should keep me going until iOS 13 releases later this year. Highly recommend this workflow to others here.

There's not much to it. Have you considered just buying one and doing it yourself? I bought this one for both of our personal cars as well as my company vehicle:

https://www.amazon.com/R2-4K-Dashboard-Camera-Recorder-Vision/dp/B074JT3698

At the time, it was on-sale for about $30 less. Bought this memory card:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B984HJ5/

Physical install took five minutes. Another five minutes to format the memory card, set the time, options, etc. It comes with a little plastic tool so you can tuck the wire up along the top edge of the windshield, down the a-pillar to the dash.

u/Dr_Pippin · 2 pointsr/TeslaLounge

Here’s what I have:

Memory card:

Memory card reader:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NPCTWYC/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apip_JwviwpBgAuzmH

Format the memory card as FAT32 (you will need to search google how to do this on a large storage device - the built-in Windows option won’t do it) and put a single folder in it called “TeslaCam” (without quotes) and that’s it for setup. Plug the memory card into the reader and plug it into one of the front USB ports in the car, and then you should be good to go. Make sure you’ve got a little camera icon at the top right corner of the Model 3’s screen that indicates recording.

I bought a Micro SD card and reader recommended on a Tesla forum. To my delight, it has both USB A and USB C plugs, so I can in fact play it on my phone! Actually, it was critical, because Android will happily create 128GB FAT32 partitions while Windows 7 & 10 will not.

Get the 64gb or 128 gb version of the below. For pro duo I suggest 128. I recommend 64 per camera. That gives you about 3-5 days worth at 3 min clips. 5 min clips are far too big in size and 4k will be ridiculous. You really don't need a 4k dash cam the file size will be huge.

Hey guys, I'm getting a P3D and have a question about Sentry mode/Tesla Cam recording. I've bought a JEDA Box because I wanted to keep a Wireless charger + a SSD for recording.

Would it be better to go for a portable SSD like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078SWJ3CF?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&th=1 , or a SD card with a reader like this: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Endurance-128GB-Micro-Adapter/dp/B07B984HJ5/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title ?

I'm just trying to find the best solution + disk size needed if I wanted to keep it installed for a while. I live in TX so the car may be outside during the summers if that affects the temperatures of the devices, not too sure what to go for.

So if video quality was the only thing I was concerned with: 2x A119 v3s.

A119 v3 - Best video quality dash cam on the market, beats even the 4k dash cams of this generation, (Thinkware Q800Pro 2K QHD) ($400-490 USD), (BlackVue DR900S 2CH (4K)) ($480-591 USD)

  • Cost structure = 2x A119 v3s ($120 USD) + 2x Micro SD cards High Endurance MLC based ($35 USD) + 2x Hardwire kits (Power Magic Pro) ($24-27 USD) = ($358-364 USD)

    ---

  • A129 2CH - A129 is more similar to A119S v2, which is a step down from the A119 v2 in video quality, in most conditions (except A119S v2 does better in extremely dark conditions.)

Cost structure would be: 1x A129 2CH ($160-170 USD) + Micro SD card High Endurance MLC based ($35 USD) + Hardwire kits (Power Magic Pro) ($24-27 USD) = ($219-232 USD)

    ---

You could swap the Hardwire kit Power Magic Pro for a VIOFO Hardwire kit for the Front A119 v3, or the A129 2CH:

  • VIOFO 3 Wire kit ($15 USD) - Cable lengths make this only attractive for the for the A) A129 2CH, or B) Front hardwire kit of A119 v3. Rear unit A119 v3 would have to be a longer Power Magic Pro. Low voltage cut off feature (Adjustable) 11.8v, 12.0v, 12.2v, Deep cycle) (12.4v, Normal use) Voltage only

  • VIOFO 2 Wire kit ($10 USD) - Cable lengths make this only attractive for the for the A) A129 2CH, or B) Front hardwire kit of A119 v3. Rear unit A119 v3 would have to be a longer Power Magic Pro. Low voltage cut off feature (Preset/Not Adjustable) 11.8v Deep Cycle Voltage only.

  • Power Magic Pro ($24-27 USD) - Has longer cable lengths useful for the front/rear units. Low voltage cut off feature (Adjustable) (11.8v, 12.0v, 12.2v, Deep Cycling), (12.4v, Normal use) Voltage/Timer based.

    ---

I don't like Garmin for any reason, they are over priced, and under preform. They are simply not good dash cams, and I have yet to see one that is a good dash cam. - They do unique features, but that does not make for a good dash cam.

I am looking for a larger storage option than my current 32GB thumb drive which fills up every 1-2 weeks.

u/kampung_boy · 1 pointr/TeslaModel3

Dude, you can afford a $40,000 car, but not a larger drive? Also, this:
If you have USB flash drive that is constantly being written to that flash drive eventually is going to fail. Writing, writing a lot (which dashcams do) is exactly what wears flash drives out.

Instead, a longer lasting way to record dashcam and sentry video is to use endurance micro sd cards paired with a USB reader. The Samsung endurance micro SD card linked below is good for 17,520 hours of recording.

https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07B984HJ5

Put it inside a decent USB micro SD reader and you have a fairly reliable solution.
