There is an even more fascinating story of a 'western' man blending into Japanese society. But instead of the 19th Century this happened in the 16th century!
His name was William Adams and a book has been written about him. I found the story fascinating especially if you think how long ago it was and how incredibly hard it must of been to gain trust ,learn the language and customs in the land of the rising sun.

If you haven't read it, Samurai William by Giles Milton is a enthralling read. It was particularly good to have an insight into the early Edo period interactions between Westerners and East Asia.

It's called "Samurai William" by Giles Milton. It's actually quite readable. Ten pages of endnotes in the back but still reads like a novel.
