I have mixed feelings about it. I've had the good fortune to experience many different formats so I could compare my experiences with each. I've had live folksy music, traditional icaros, DJ'ed music (appropriate for ceremony), etc. Sometimes with long stretches of silence. Although I certainly appreciate /u/relaxedguy's perspective and consider it perfectly valid, if it were me I'd probably bring a dedicated MP3 player (not a phone) with earbuds that seal well into my ears so they hopefully wouldn't leak too much sound. Here is a cheap option for example.

I think the concern about light from the player is well worth taking seriously. If you're in a dark ceremony space and light up the screen on your player, that can be very disturbing for someone who might be deep into their own experience. Definitely be respectful of others and don't be that person. However if you can for example throw a blanket over yourself while the screen is lit up and until it shuts off to keep the light from disturbing others, it can be done respectfully.

Also keep in mind though that the bright light will pull you out as well. Ideally you'll have a player that you can pause, skip tracks, or whatever else you might want to do by feel so you don't have to look at it again for the rest of the night once you get it going. Keep it under a blanket so that if pushing a button lights up the screen no one will see it. If you aren't sure that you can manage all of this while under the influence of the medicine, then it may be best to just not bring it.

My experience with silence in ceremony is that it does have value, but music really gets things moving when I'm stuck sometimes. I can feel myself stagnate and am waiting for the music to start back up. I certainly feel that it does help me. The downside to plugging music into your ears like that is that you become disconnected from what's going on in the room. Not ideal, but if it were me I'd bring a music setup and try it but remain open to the possibility that it might not feel like the right thing to do in the moment.
