I used to run with music, but then I used this. You can still buy them and they are not expensive.

I wear in ear headphones these Sony's specifically since the housing is so small. Also I use the largest in ear adapter, I found the trick with in ear headphones is to say you want to insert the left phone, reach over your head with your right hand and pull up on the top of your ear to really open the canal up then insert the bud and left go of your ear. I do ride with my music pretty much turned all the way up, but when I start to lane split or get near a lot of traffic I just reach down and hit pause. Here is an example of how I use the headphones.

*edit: I use them with a Sansa Clip Zip which is just about as small as a ipod nano.

Just saying, the Clip Zip and e200 both also run RockBox very well, from my experience with the E200, Clip+, and Zip. The E200 is the best supported by the community, followed by the +, and finally the Zip. The displays are better on both I've listed, a decent bit more readable quickly than the + for quick glances. Also, while possibly not as important for you, Doom (Or FreeDoom, both are preloaded by default) plays phenomenally well on the E200, alright on the Zip, and awfully on the +. Yes, I've tried on all three, and the + is an interesting exercise in frustration, given its 64x128 px 25% yellow 75% blue LCD.
