buy permethrin and spray it on all of you DG clothes, shoes, and bag. Let it dry before wearing the clothes. It will keep ticks off you all season, re-apply next season.

Forget worrying about boots, bear spray and all of that other basic goods. Anchorage is a town of 300k, we have a ton of stores with all that kind of goods.
You need to worry about bugs, I think someone mentioned mosquito netting. That is great, but the only thing I found that actually makes a huge difference for mosquitoes is Permethrin clothing treatment. REI carries it as a brand called Sawyer. You can buy it on Amazon. I've spent time in the interior during bug season and the mosquitoes were so bad it honestly ruined everything about the trip. So I went back prepared, you treat your clothing with this stuff, but I also treated my hammock, tent, camping chair etc. It lasts months and through washings, I'd be walking with the people I went with, and they would be covered in bugs while they wouldn't even land on anything I had treated with that stuff. Then I used a mosquito netting hat, and only had to treat my hands and face/neck with conventional bug spray when I chose not to use the hat. The reason I say you should worry about it now is that you need to have a nice dry area to do it. A garage or something works best, treat all your clothes and let thoroughly dry, read the instructions its kind of gnarly stuff until it bonds with your clothing.
I refuse to go out in bug season without my gear treated with it anymore.

A lot of campers/hikers, myself included, use it. It doesn't just repel, but it kills bugs on contact as well. If you want to be extra cautious, use bug spray too. Just don't treat your clothes near any cats, as the permethrin in liquid form is toxic. Once it dries, it is safe.

I spray my backpacking pants with Permethrin. Had one crawl all the way up my clothes and bite me on the back of the neck a couple years ago. No trouble since I started spraying.

Mosquitos suck, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You'll still get bit, but LOTS less than your buddies who don't pre-treat. As always wear bugspray, use nets, bring anti-itch cream, all the standard stuff. But pre-treating goes a long ways towards gettin' the little critters to leave you alone!

We were required to use this on our uniforms when I was in the military and I have since used it for trips to South America and Asia. This, along with proper clothing and skin spray should keep you pretty well protected.

This stuff works amazingly well. It's permethrin, and it'll repel and kill ticks and mosquitoes. Spray your clothes and shoes, let them dry, and the stuff will last through at least one wash cycle.
My dogs are on K9 Advantix II, I use permethrin, and after every outing I do a spot tick check. Hate those fuckers.
Deet is OK, but permethrin is much better at repelling.
If you work in the woods treat your close with permethrin. I have been in areas where one day I pulled 20 or so lone stars off my clothes and a week later with the treated clothes I didn't see one.

If your dogs use dog packs, you can treat it with permethrin which repels ticks. Treating all your other gear and clothes with it will definitely help keep the ticks at bay as well.
I cannot advise on the bite but I suggest this stuff to keep them off.

I have been using it for a few years now. I no longer find ticks on me. Soak your clothes with the stuff pretty good the night before or so and you are good to go.
