> ALWAYS RE-KEY EVERY EXTERIOR DOOR! First thing you should do. Reputable retailers can key them all replacements to the same lockset/key for you. You never know who had keys to what.

Amen to this, however locks are one of the simpler things to self-install. There are even some that allow DIY rekeying: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001172NJM

Keypad locks are also great. If you have someone like a contractor who needs access to your house, you don't need to give them a key, just a code. You can even create a code just for them and disable it when they're done, and never worry about copies of keys being made.

This is the keypad I have. The battery of this one supposedly lasts longer because most models have a motor that drives the deadbolt. With this one the battery just controls the keypad and circuitry, and you still turn the bolt by hand.

You can remove the house key from your keychain if you install a keyless entry deadbolt on your front door. I'm not a minimalist but I got this keypad a few months ago and it's awesome. http://www.amazon.com/Schlage-BE365VCAM716-Camelot-Keypad-Deadbolt/dp/B000NJDRDA

A keyless door lock Not fumbling with keys while holding a baby is awesome.

Got the Schlage BE365VCAM716 Camelot Keypad Deadbolt on Amazon. I only needed a deadbolt but they also have a traditional door handle with the same mechanism. Got this because it was highest rated for marine exposure (my rental is on a salt marsh on Cape Cod). Have had it in place since November 2017 on the same battery. Highly recommend it!

Because my new smart deadbolt that I've already bought would overshoot the plate considerably

Not OP, but this is the one I installed about 9 months ago. I didn’t want a smart lock, but I did want to have a keyless entry. I can program multiple codes for guests, and because the locking mechanism isn’t motorized, the battery is supposed to last a long time.
