I was deciding between the Kwikset Kevo and the Schlage Connect, ended up going with the Schlage after reading reviews. It has ST integration via Z-wave, coded entry for guests/temp, manual lock if needed, and ANSI Grade 1 protection. I've heard mixed reviews about the Bluetooth functionality for the Kevo, and while it would be nice to have proximity unlock, I felt the Schlage was an overall better choice for me.

It depends if you want to control everything from one place or don;t mind using a separate app for each thing. IF you want an all-in-one solution, the best bet is a Vera pro or VeraLite from MiCasaVerde. You don't have to re-invent the wheel as most of your wants will work right out of the box. What it doesn't natively do, it is almost guaranteed that someone has already done the modification and you can just grab their code.

For the lock I would go with a Yale or Schlage. Even Kwikset has zigbee and z-wave models. Honeywell makes a nice thermostat for cheap. There are several ways to integrate your doorbell as well.

Otherwise, Nest is great, Dropcam is awesome, There are a whole host of cool single-focus products out there.

I went a similar route with the Schlage Connect only a slightly different cosmetic design with the Camelot series.

I'm not sure what you've read on connectivity, but I can tell you from personal experience (I have 3 of them now), that once connected, mine have been surprisingly reliable. It's the initial connection that can be a mess. Essentially, I had to pair the door lock prior to installing in the door. Sounds weird, and it's a pain as you have to assemble the lock and then disassemble the lock prior to installation. But once you get it done correctly, I've found mine to work as expected.

Fellow Canuck here. I've got this Schlage one, and it's been great. No issues at all with the cold weather (-30's on the prairies). On the really cold days, I'd unlock it from my warm car using my phone.

My Ring doorbell pro worked great too throughout the winter months. My ring stickup cam not so much - the battery didn't like the cold.

I'm assuming what he means are electronic locks or smart locks. Personally, I have a Schlage BE469 deadbolt on my front door and a FE595 lever on my garage door.

The BE365 is also a good pick for a deadbolt if you don't want a smart lock, and it costs about half as much as the BE469.

Last note - If you buy a smart lock, do your research on connectivity options first. Schlage has 3 different smart lock options for Z-Wave, Zigbee, or Bluetooth.

Any zwave lock will work. This is the exact one I used. Some of the Kwikset locks are cheaper but the physical portion of the lock can be easily bruteforced. The schlage one is ANSI grade 1 which is the highest. They also make more locks and prices fluctuate that one has gone up since I bought it. Some of them don't have electronic deadbolts so they'll unlock the machinism then you have to turn the deadbolt physically (the model I posted is motorised). You can read up the options on any schlage zwave lock to see but most should match all the features. Yale makes some nice locks too but they're a bit more expensive. If you have any question's feel free to ask me or post in /r/homeautomation.

u/HtownTexans · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

I have this yale model. 2 of them actually. They are nice and do the zwave stuff you would want. I have this Schlage on my front door and think it is a nicer front door deadbolt. The schlage lets you (with wink 2 at least) program pin codes from the app and tells you which code was used to open the door. The Yales let you customize pins too but need to be done at the lock itself. Honestly the Yales are really nice and I did buy a second one for my back door after being satisfied with the one on my garage door.

u/jam905 · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

That would work. These are the combinations that I have used:

Hub: Vera Edge Hub or Wink Hub or Wink Hub 2

Lock: Schlage Connect Deadbolt and Schlage Connect Leverlock

Batteries last about 6-8 months in the deadbolt and >1 year in the leverlock.

I just use Zwave keypad locks. Walk up, punch in a code.

I installed a couple of these about 9 months ago: https://www.amazon.com/Schlage-Connect-BE469NX-Touchscreen-Deadbolt/dp/B00AGK9KOG/ref=sr_1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1493809142&sr=1-2&keywords=camelot+schlage

Supports multiple 6-digit codes, so each family member/neighbor can have their own & connects to hub for text alerts/remote control etc. I haven't used a key for the house since I installed them. Schlage have been making locks for nearly 100 years, and I have found them to be reliable.

Plus, they look cool without appearing too girly.

u/how_do_i_change_this · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

I got this Schlage deadbolt as part of a handleset and it's worked out for me well (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AGK9KOG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_9FLeAb9R1HP1A)

It doesn't connect directly to Google Home, so it needs a hub (I have SmartThings) and then you can control it with your Google Home. I like to say "Ok Google, lock the door" as I'm walking out. It takes two seconds to lock, so I have the door shut by then.

Sleeker locks like Kevo are nice, but I like the keypad so I can give other family members their own code instead of having them download an app.

u/Azn03 · 1 pointr/the404

Ah. Yeah! I'm in that category. I bought a Nest and a Smart Lock last year.

Nest - Great. I haven't had problems. The winter months surprisingly has been more expensive for me (Electric for the fail) but other than that it has been very very easy to use. I usually don't even go up to the system because you can access it all through the phone.

Schlage Smart Lock (http://amzn.com/B00AGK9KOG) - I bought this cause I looked at all the other smart locks and wasn't impressed. I was on the wait list for the Lockitron, but after a year+ to get it I canceled my pre-order and just settled for the Schlage. I don't use the wifi capability that it has because it drains the battery (from what I've seen) plus, you have to add another piece of tech to use it.

I'm thinking of modding my shutters to make it automatic and smart as well. I'm not too crazy about the light tech (unless it comes down on price drastically).

Not yale, but this one worked perfectly with Abode / Alexa. Picked it up for about $120 open box on Amazon Warehouse.

Which schlage model do you have

I have the BE469NX CAM 619

u/alexlfm · 1 pointr/winkhub

OK so my favorite accessory is, by far, the garage door opener and sensor system. It closes my door automatically at night if I forget and leave it open, and sends me notifications when it's left open during the day. Plus as I have the lights controlled, it turns on my main garage lights when I come home at night. https://www.amazon.com/GoControl-Linear-GD00Z-4-Z-Wave-Controller/dp/B00M75TEIU

Secondly, I know it's not a switch but I also love the Schlage connect lock. This was the first "smart" device I ever got, well before I had Wink. It's amazing as with remote start cars, and this, I now never have to touch my keys, and it works great for letting people in with temporary codes when you're on vacation. Plus when I go for a run I don't have to carry my keys. It integrates fantastically with Wink letting you set codes, lock door, change settings, etc. I actually only bought the Wink hub because of it since I wanted an easier way to program/control it (well, that and the fact that when Quirky went under Meijer was selling the hub for $5 and the controlled power strips for $10. No lie.) https://www.amazon.com/Schlage-Connect-BE469NX-Touchscreen-Deadbolt/dp/B00AGK9KOG/ref=sr_1_2?s=hardware&ie=UTF8&qid=1479481619&sr=1-2&keywords=schlage+keyless+lock

As for switches, I tend to prefer the Leviton ones as they are the cleanest looking, don't have obnoxious lights (like the GE ones) and are reasonably priced. I only have one Caseta switch, and while it works fine, I just don't know that I care for the style. (On a side note, the Caseta remotes can work for any Wink device if you set up shortcuts for the various buttons). The annoying thing with the GE switches is that you have to push up to turn it on and down to turn it off. While I know that sounds like a silly complaint since physical switches work that way, it's something you have to think about since it doesn't stay up or down, and instead is always in the middle. I have the same complaint with the separate buttons on the Caseta switches. This is another reason why I like the Leviton ones. Only one button which simply toggles the state.

Finally, all the Z-Wave switches work independently of the hub and will ALWAYS respond to your physical commands immediately, regardless of hub or no hub. They are always a physical switch first and remote second.

u/chadcf · 1 pointr/cars

I've done that too! These things are great, I bought one living in a house with no garage (so no option to add a garage door keypad) so I could go out biking without having to take a house key with me. Works great, also convenient for when I'm out of town and need the neighbors or a dog sitter to get in and out easily.

u/xyz123sike · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Saw one that included new model in the title but it is from a 3rd part seller so who knows what that even means. Says it comes with 2 keys instead if 1, but I don’t see any other difference. I’d rather get this one and make a key copy for $2. Price looks like it dropped, tempted to return mine and rebuy it lol

Edit if there are different versions hopefully someone else can chime in. It looks like the same one that I have installed though

Edit
oh the one I linked is the “newer model” from be Schlage seller, odd that it is cheaper. Taking a look

u/rcktman31 · 1 pointr/smarthome

You can connect multiple Schlage z-wave locks to a single z-wave hub.

The recent (I feel?) increase in spammers is making reddit as a whole and seemingly home-automation related subs especially a chore to read. It's becoming a facebook news feed where you get - Content --> Ad --> Content --> Ad --> Ad.

I support banning of twitter and fb links and all related spam. It's just farming Amazon affiliate links.

The above is not a great deal, but again, to fight the spam - Non affiliate link: https://www.amazon.com//dp/B00AGK9KOG

Maybe taking away their monetary incentives will discourage them from posting s**t.

Edit: After a little more thought I think we may already be in need of an AutoModerator - With account age and karma restrictions on who can submit posts. This will weed out a lot of the spam and create less work for mod team.

u/Zzyzx1618 · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Is this the same model? Their installation video says you need at least a 5 inch distance between the deadbolt latch center and the door latch center.

I've got the Schlage Camelot with the touch screen:

http://www.amazon.com/Schlage-BE469NXCAM619-Touchscreen-Deadbolt-Technology/dp/B00AGK9KOG/

Took 5 minutes to install. It works great. Never had an issue. Got this particular one because it has 3 different configurable alarms and interfaces with Vera3 perfectly.

Which Wink hub do you recommend? I plan to have other Z-Wave devices like switches

u/earnstaf · 1 pointr/firstworldproblems

This is going to format like shit because I'm copying it straight from an email I wrote my sister.
The important bits: the hub is Samsung Smartthings, switches are mostly GE zwave switches, voice control provided by Amazon Echo.
Rolling it out across the whole house isn't easy or cheap, but it's worth it when you have someone over and you give the "turn on everything" command and you watch every light pop on, then do it in reverse.
This will get you started :)

There are other things like motion sensors and garage door controllers that start opening up some really cool "routines."

I have a Ring Doorbell (not the pro), it works pretty well in my experience but it gets a lot of hate. I have a 96 year brick home so running a doorbell wire wasn't much of an option, or honestly all that appealing to me, the battery power was ideal.

I have 3 of the Schlage Connect and they work pretty great. Those connect to the Wink Hub (Z-Wave) which will tie into the Ring App. Then I connect everything together with automation via Home Assistant. Ring has connectivity (in the App) with Kevo, Lockstate, and Wink.

The truth of the matter is none of this stuff is really at 100% right now. Most of it is new and still has bugs, delays, etc from time to time. Non tech savvy people will always struggle with the concept of having to open an app and do something as opposed to just walking over to the door and unlocking it. I try to automate as much as possible so that I don't have to use an app to do anything, it just happens.

My GF doesn't seem to struggle with any of it, but she just uses the Amazon Echo most of the time and the Wink app on occasion. How well someone else can use it has never been a concern of mine though, you adapt or die is my moto.
