I build my foamies out of MPF-B. It's 6mm thick and I reinforce it with carbon fiber spars. While EPP may be better, it's more difficult to shape (the best method is hot wire cutting for EPP). A common hobbyist choice is dollar tree foam board, which is ~4.2mm thick and laminted with paper.
The lamination does increase tensile strength, but instead of using pre-laminated foam I laminate with 1.5mil document laminating film by running a heat shoe over the surface. Hope this helps.
