Ok first off, sexual assault/harassment is a very severe offence here. Anyone caught would be seeing the inside of a cell for a very, very long time.

>what are the laws regarding something like this?

She's entitled to defend herself by whatever means necessary. But that doesn't mean she can commandeer the bus and run the bastard down until he's a gooey paste (which I would prefer).

>I've heard carrying a knife is OK, but no idea about using it to ward of an attacker.

They're definitely NOT ok. A pocket knife, folding knife, multi/utility tools are fine.

But an actual single blade would get you into trouble.

Anything can be a weapon, I carry with me a Schrade Tactical Pen. Which can be used to severely hurt someone or write a love letter to my wife. It saves me the trouble of having to check on luggage because of a knife. I just carry that pen everywhere.

My wife carries it with her when she travels alone and it came in handy a few times.

In all seriousness, carry the most pen-like, basic tactical pen you can find (doesn't look like a weapon, no firearm or aggressive branding). Better than nothing, and if it's very arguably a writing tool, who's going to fine you for carrying a pen?

I.e., this, but not something like this since it could be construed as a weapon.

But then, this is California we're talking about. It's absolutely retarded protecting oneself is becoming a crime. I'm all for open and concealed carry; it's not like anyone with violent intent is worried about state laws.

In that case maybe check out this Schrade it's one of the less aggressive looking tactical pens, and it's not so expensive as to be unlosable.

Lo!

Also, I really really really want Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium as it is part of the process getting my computer back up and running. However I realistically do not expect that :-P

In real life I could use a tactical pen I have to do therapy and home evaluations in pretty shady neighborhoods and it would be cool to have a pen and semi self defense tool just in case.
