I got one of these years ago, definitely saved my ass a few times.

Although, This one may be better for you if you live in a cold climate and need it pretty often.

Of course, getting a jump and driving to the parts store to get your battery tested and charged may be a better investment in the short-run.

There is absolutely zero reason to leave it plugged in 24x7 for a month. Plug it in 24 hours before you need to start it and call it good.

If you're worried about the batteries get yourself one of these and leave it plugged in. I mounted mine on the inner fenderwell and wired it to a plug in the bumper using a wye adapter so I could plug the block heater into it as well during the winter.

I bought one these for the old pickup I sometimes don't start for a month.

It just screws to the inside of the fender with a couple self tapping screws and you slide the leads into the battery terminals. Then you just plug an extension cord into the charger through the grill. Unplug before you start and your on your way.

Batteries haven't swelled at all. They are reading 13V.

i did move them alittle to bring them up stairs and i wired them up.

My new rig doesn't have all this (solar, shorepower charging, and alternator charging), however, my old rig did. The solar when straight into the battery bank from the solar charge controller and it all worked fine. After looking a little I'm going to say I don't know.

My new rig isn't getting solar; just alternator and shore power. I plan to wire like this:

I do feel pretty confident if I was connected to shore power and the engine was on the battery charger would read the voltage over 14.4 V and power off.

I had a similar issue with my 2010 Honda CR-V EX. Battery is 2 years old. I have tested the alternator, all good. I did the parasitic drain test and found out that the car insurance tracker was consuming about 4 mA, which is enormous (out of 7 mA total).

The problem is that I live very close to my work (about 5km). The problem usually appears during winter times. I leave the car to my wife since it's AWD and I always take the Corolla for fuel economy. So, the CR-V ends up doing very low milage, followed by long periods in the driveway (one day or two sometimes).

The fix was to add a onboard automatic battery charger. I bought this one:

Now, when we come back home, I simply plug the car and the battery is always fully charged when we need the car. Installation is easy (took about 15 minutes). I don't plug the car during the summer, only during winter.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm disappointed that the charger can be damaged by starting the car while it's plugged in as well, and initially thought that this must be some kind of catch-all warranty voiding type clause rather than an actual issue, but (one of) the critical reviews suggests otherwise:

There might be something I could add on the charger's output to compensate for its design flaws (a diode perhaps, assuming there's not too much voltage drop and it doesn't affect the charger's transition from charging to maintaining), but that doesn't solve the problem of the car being driven away while the extension cord is still plugged in. Best case scenario this damages the extension cord (assuming I notice the damage) or the wall socket (easy to replace); worst case scenario it damages the connections to the block heater itself, requiring that to be replaced. Or worse yet, an electrical fire caused by damage that goes unnoticed.

If I do end up going ahead with this project, I intend to use a suitably-rated switch to bypass the relay for when it inevitably fails. I have a switch rated for 30A at 12V DC which should be fine for the starter solenoid (it's on a 15A fuse), but I'd rather deal with a lower current control signal if at all possible. Especially if interrupting the starter solenoid circuit results in the check engine light coming on (unless it clears by itself).

During your automotive electronics installation days, where in the circuit did your clients typically install their kill switches? Where would an off-the-shelf immobiliser be spliced in?

I'd just put the biggest marine deep cycle battery I can fit as my starting battery, (probably group 31) and get a $100 lithium jump pack in case I ran it down.

You can build your own goal zero type portable battery setup for$200-400. The Yeti 400 is a 33ah 12v AGM deep cycle battery with 300w sine wave inverter and a 12v plug in. It also has features like low battery alarm, displays power usage, and comes with an AC charger. You won't save much $ making it smaller/less powerful, but it will weigh less if you'd like to use a smaller than 33ah battery.

$50-150 for an AGM deep cycle 12v battery, 33ah

$75-150 for a 300w pure sine wave inveter, you can save more money if you don't need pure sine wave or 300w, or don't mind an always on fan

$25-50 for a 12v trickle charger to charge the battery up at home, if you don't have a charger already

$15 for a male to male 12v adapter to charge it from your car, or use your jumper cables.

$10-20 for a 12v socket or two, or a USB charger socket

$10-50 for a battery case to hold the battery and mount the inverter and sockets on

$30 on misc parts like voltage display, wire, and fuses

I live in a travel trailer and recently upgraded my power to 50 amp service so I can use more of my toys at once. There's a huge transformer in most RVs that produce 12v power for all the lights/fans to use while you're connected to an outlet. I decided to not put the transformer back in when I did my upgrade and chose one of these instead. get one of these. Plug in your car when you get home. It mounts to the firewall, so it's always hooked up to the Battery, you just plug it in.

The next best option is to disconnect the negative terminal when the vehicle sits. There are plenty of various types of quick disconnect switches available.

Your best bet for honest service is to find a battery or electrical specialty shop in your area. They may vary well carry Schumacher products in stock, and you know you're not dealing with some random "mechanic" on CL. :)
