Most tape guns have a "safety mechanism" that retracts the teeth unless you pushed down on the flap that smooths the tape to the box. It might make them safer to handle, but it definitely makes them more annoying to use. Here's one without.

If tape noise bothers you, here's the low-noise version.

I prefer the tape guns without handles, so I splurged and bought the H192. It was worth the $40. For some reason Amazon won't give me the link directly to it, but it's on the same page as the H150.

I used to have this problem but then I bought a dispenser gun. No more sticking back on itself or any of the other aforementioned problems. Got this when it was on sale for $19 shipped. Took a little while to get used to - like taping it evenly down a straight line but that comes with practice. I still use duck brand tape. I paid $0.66 a roll for mine. http://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Sealing-Tape-Dispenser-H180/dp/B0002FTH66

If you are going to move, start your box search a MONTH in advance.

Liquor stores, grocery stores, Craigslist.

Use the phone if possible, then drive there immediately.

Mostly Craigslist was a hard one. Lots of false leads, crazy busy people who just just moved, people whose boxes are across town but you get there and most are gone.

If you need a lot of boxes, you're moving NOW and you have to buy them, go to Home Depot. They are the cheapest to buy boxes. Small boxes are 69 cents, and the largest sizes are still under $2. Wardrobe boxes are $9.97. Meanwhile u-haul is like $2-3 for a small box.

Wait. Looks like u-haul is cheap if you look online. Maybe take those prices with you if you go to u-haul, because that sure wasn't the price I saw when I went there.

If you're going to get a tape dispenser, the scotch brand moving and packing dispenser is the best. I tried many different kinds, and though it is simple, you can reel out the tape quickly and easily, never get hung up or cut and never lose the end and have to unstick it again. I just hold the dispenser in one hand, pull the tape out the length needed with the other and press against the seam.

I used to have this kind but the tape was always getting stuck. Mostly worked, but lots slower and it depends on the tape sticking. Also dangerous with kids.
