There are these really nice reusable adhesive gel mounting squares I use for posters and pictures.
Ive used the same $5ish pack for several posters and papers over the years and they don’t damage anything. They work sort of like those “sticky hands” you get in the gumball machines.
Yeah it is strong enough to hold with maybe a thin case, but the weight of the phone plus the fact that the coils to which the magnet stick are on the bottom 3rd of the phone make it tip over and fall as the slightest touch.
Despite this I've gotten it to work by sticking one of these on the mount.

Its stickiness combined with the magnetic hold the phone just fine! It even works in landscape mode!
I used these (but more like 1"x3" instead of 1"x1") for mounting my Leap to the Rift and it works perfectly.
