No spoilers, but you are going to be disappointed and OP is right about it being a bit of a bore. I'd suggest reading "The Scramble for Africa" by Thomas Pakenham instead. Rip roaring adventure from start to finish, and amazingly it is non-fiction at that.

The Scramble for Africa is an excellent account of how the various European powers carved up the continent between them during the latter part of the 19th century. It can really help as a means of understanding the origins of some of the conflicts and problems that plague Africa today.

The same author has also written a comprehensive history of the Boer War which I enjoyed reading too, although that does move the time period into the early 20th century.

"The Scramble for Africa" by Thomas Pakenham, unimaginative title aside, is a very thorough and readable account of the period, covering all the major European players.
