Because fuck monthly bandwidth caps. Like hell I'm gonna re-download any AAA game @ 40-100 Gb. Just look out for sales on amazon and other electronics vendors. I think I got my 8Tb drive for like $100, and I've seen little micro drives with 2Tb for $50. Just plug in a USB3 hub and you can keep expanding.

Edit: Wow so many responses! BTW I currently have an 8TB as my main external drive, which doubles as a USB hub so I can connect another drive in the future. (link) It's currently $150 on Amazon, but I bought it way lower, so might want to check back around holiday sales. Also, did a google search and found that the current limit of external storage is 16Tb across two drives, though I've seen reports of people using more than two with no issues.

Yes they are.

The one you linked to is the previous model, and only comes with a 1 year warranty if you live in good ol' Murica.

2x USB 3.0 ports means you're quite limited in expansion. Even this cheap motherboard supports 4x SATA connections.

The Rasp. Pi4 itself can only reach 300MB/s read/write speeds. Modern hard drives are around 200MB/s, which means you're CPU-limited (or perhaps internal bus-limited) on mirrored-drive setups. (200MB/s across 2x drives == woooops, Rasp. Pi too slow for that)

10Gbps Fiber switches are only $240 now. You can remove the network bandwidth by using DAC SFP+ ports and an Ebay'd Mellanox Connectx-3 (under $50).

Actual SATA drives give you more flexibility as well as better specs. Consider this 8TB USB Drive. Do you know if its SMR or PMR? I bet you its shitty SMR and simply undocumented on the materials. SATA-drives are just better documented and labeled than USB-drives in my experience.

Why avoid SMR? Well... because it sometimes hits 10MB/s transfer speeds., that's sequential mind you. 10MB/s is slower than many people's internet connection, let alone Rasp. Pi. So if you want any degree of reasonable responsiveness, you should stick with PMR or CMR drives only.

A common NAS setup would be 3x hard drives (RAID5 like, or RAIDZ, with one parity drive). You simply don't have enough USB connections for that however.

I'd still say my point remains. I could go over to Target right now and pick up a 4TB external for $105, so perhaps slightly higher than that $90 sale, but $100 is not uncommon. 5TB drives seem to have mostly been phased out (I believe WD discontinued it from their lineup), so you'd have to "settle" for $120 for a 5TB Seagate right now from Amazon. Or, from Amazon, $180 for 8TB, so the same price as that particular external that most people want to just shuck, or I might have to spend an extra $4 if I wanted it today from Best Buy (though it's only in stock in store at one store local to me). We may be in that just-before-Memorial-Day-sales period, so I didn't see the greatest pricing. What were everyday prices like back in 2010? $20/TB?

Your example isn't any better at demonstrating the price "trend." You're picking a relatively premium internal drive and trying to compare it to today's pricing. Also, was that $85 a typical price, or did you grab it during a sale? Sales come and go. WD Blacks don't really go on sale as much, and at the moment, they're up a bit. I paid $200 back in mid 2014 for a 4TB WD black, $175 in mid 2015, and $165 in early 2016. Just because that drive is $200-210 right now doesn't mean typical or average drive pricing hasn't come down. Also, it's been the case as long as I can remember that drives at the lower end of the capacity spectrum are usually going to be more expensive per capacity than higher capacities. At the moment, I'd consider 2TB at the lower end of the spectrum nowadays, but it would have been closer to the higher end 7 years ago.

It seems this WD black 1TB was $100 back in 2010 (according to a couple reviews, and there's a pcper review from Feb 2010 mentioning it was around $100). The more current version is only $73.

The USB enclosure ones are cheaper $180 than the raw drives $210 which are no longer made but they're archive drives. Sometimes I get normal write speeds but sometimes I get 1 fucking megabyte per second. I'm currently transferring 8TB at 1 Mbps. Not worth it.

Edit: I bought 10 raw drives and 6 usb enclosure drives so it wasn't just a one time occurrence.

The short answer is that you activated iCloud Music Library, a way of storing your iTunes library in the cloud on your computer.

This MACWORLD article gives a good intro to what you experienced, and this iMore landing page links to several articles about iTunes, local vs iCloud music storage, and more.

Personally I don't deal with music in the cloud, aside from a subscription to Apple Music (which I love and which has almost completely eliminated the amount of listening I do with my own music: 36,000+ songs so far, with a couple of hundred CDs still unripped and sitting in boxes). I do not use iCloud Music Library, instead keeping all my music on a drive (and a backup drive, and BackBlaze online backup

Amazon Prime Day sale is going on right now and they have the:

Seagate Expansion 8TB for $154
Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8TB for $160

They seem like a really good deal but the drives are so alike that I do not know which is better. Additionally, several reviews say that their drive failed on them after several weeks/months or even a year. I'm worried about the same happening. Wouldn't want to download a bunch of content, back it up, and then loose it all in a year. I don't know if it's because of user error and they wrote and deleted off the drive a lot or because that's just how the drives are.

im using 2 of these. my old comp didnt really have the option to expand with internal drives so went USB and it works perfectly fine for my needs and is convenient for when/if i need to take my files to go for whatever reason. just me here streaming though, not sure if multiple people streaming at same time would work the same.

Honestly if you're using final cut on the macbook it will probably out perform that Dell anyways. So if you're more comfortable, then that's what you should do.

If you go the 4K route though, you need to get an external hard drive. You'll fill those 512GB drives in those laptops really quickly.

I dont know much about buying external drives and opening them to retrieve the hard drive, but the little I read about it says not all models you can retrieve the drive since some have soldered SATA->USB connection and of course, you probably lose the warranty.

If you don't care too much about write speeds, the Seagate Backup Plus 8TB - $200 or the Seagate Expansion 8TB - $170 would be the cheapest options for now.

Shucking them would be the SMR Barracuda Compute

I agree about tape being cheap, but it's not much cheaper than a modern external USB HDD nowadays. Now if you have a library (old dell TL2000 or 132T's) it's pretty fun to script the library control stuff.

I setup a SSH RSYNC process before i used CRASHPLAN to an old LINUX box at my dad's house. Provided remote replication that was active all the time. that was a fun project for me. Maybe something similar could be your next adventure. Rasperry Pi3's are plenty beefy to serve as a LINUX NAS/RSYNC destination. And they are super-cheap.

Data protection is a thankless skill/profession, i'll tell you. I'm happy to see someone taking an interest. My field of expertise is a lonely one. :) Good Luck!

I bought the Seagte 8TB stand up drive, and still havent filled it up. Was 160 USD on sale. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

The best part of tech is it continues to drop in price. Also it has a passthrough that is recognized by the xbox, so you can use USB devices on the drive, and it'll be usable on the Xbox.

For 4k that would not surprise me. I have Halo 5 and that without a 4k update is pushing 100GB. I have a friend that won't install it because the size of it takes up a fifth of his whole hard drive. If you're going to buy the X invest in a large External Hard Drive. I believe they are claiming the X can handle 2 8TB external hard drives at once. Forbs gives a good Seagate that will also add extra USBs and Amazon has it for about $180USD
