The best way to spruce up this wardrobe is to do it better than everyone else. Some of your freedom is restricted, but not all of it. There's a thousand light blue OCBDs out there, a thousand hairstyles, a thousand tie designs, a thousand belts, etc. etc. Make sure everything fits well and is well designed. Here's a few ideas:

OCBD: Uniqlo, Gap, J. Crew Factory. Spend a few bucks and get it tailored so it fits perfectly.

Pants: Dockers, Topman, Gap. Look for skinny, slim, or tapered fits. Get them hemmed to no break, and if you're wearing them with boat shoes, cuff them a bit, if you're allowed to.

Belt: Everlane, Tanner, Norstrom Rack. I know, I know, you're a student and spending almost $100 on a belt seems dumb. That's just to give you an idea of the kind of design to look for. Nordstrom Rack usually has a good selection of nice designer belts.

Sneakers: Jack Purcell, Superga, Tretorn. Not sure whether "solid black" means no white allowed?

Boat Shoes: Sperry, Sebago, Dockers. Get brown. Trust me. And please don't wear socks with boat shoes. I don't care what the school says.

Ties: Seersucker, Knit, Stripe. With ties, look for unique fabrics and prints, like chambray, linen, and seersucker, floral, stripes, and solids, etc.

Extra Stuff: A nice watch, cool sunglasses, and a classy tie bar.

Hope this helps?

You paid $3000 for a Seiko? Someone ripped you off. They're going for $50 on Amazon!

Edit: hate to tell you this, it's a Frankenwatch. The dial is installed upside down.

Hey r/watches! This is my concise collection of budget watches. I’ve been collecting for about a year now and have been having a great time with the hobby. As a student, I can’t really afford anything expensive, so I’ve been looking for budget pieces with good value. Here are my pieces:

Sea-Gull 1963 : Got this from Long Island Watch and it has been great. I initially had a problem with a pusher falling out, but I emailed Marc and he sent me a replacement right away. The customer service at Long Island Watch is phenomenal; Marc responded within a few hours of my email the day after Christmas. He even offered to upgrade me to the sapphire version, though I declined because I prefer the acrylic.

Nodus Trieste : This is a great diver from a new microbrand out of California. I got the STP 1-11 version, though the version with the Seiko movement is probably a better value. I love how this watch resembles the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe, but avoids being an homage. The unique umbrella hands are also a great touch. The watch runs well within the promised +/- 5 sec a day, losing about 5 sec per week. I haven’t seen any on this sub, so let me know if you want a review.

Seiko SNK807 : This was my first automatic and I honestly couldn’t be happier with it. The lack of hacking and handwinding is kind of a bummer, but for under $60 I can’t complain at all. I put a high dome on it and polished the bezel a little bit ago in order to keep things interesting.

The straps on the Nodus and the Seagull are from cheapestnatostraps.com. I really like the NATO on the Nodus, but I’d stay away from the leather NATOs. The strap on the Seiko is from Barton , and I 10/10 would recommend.

My current setup:

  • Seiko 5
  • Timex Easy Reader
  • 8 nylon nato straps
  • 1 brown leather nato strap

I'm in for about $150. I've got 22 different combinations, and 2 watches of known quality. His quick-release system is interesting I suppose, but that's the only thing here that is innovative.

EDIT: After giving it some more thought, I really do like his simple designs as well. It's difficult to find a nice clean design without including horribly intrusive branding as well.
u/waterhoused · 8 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Spurred on by this thread on r/FMF a few days ago, I purchased the Seiko 5 in blue off of Amazon. The blue, green, and cream models were on sale for $50, and using the 20% off newsletter promotion it came out to $40.

Special thanks to /u/JoCoLaRedux for pointing me to this Hadley-Roma brown leather watch strap. It appears he’s wearing it with the cream face, which also looks great.

u/stylefish · 7 pointsr/Watches

Don't knock metal bands before you've tried them! Some are super comfortable, but there are some that should go to a scrap reclaimer immediately.

As JHG722 suggested, the SNK809 is a great watch at a great price right now ($40.99 on Amazon). Not sure how long it'll be that price before it jumps back up to ~$55. Unfortunately, only the black 809 seems to be on sale. The blue SNK807 and cream SNK803 are going for their regular price. These would be my go-to suggestion for an automatic within your price range.

Some of the other budget brands like Orient usually go for right above your upper limit at around $130+, except this black dial Orient Symphony at ~$92, for some reason. It is a bit more formal looking than the Seiko 5s, though that might fit your conservative style requirement.

You could pair the SNKs with a Hadley-Roma strap, also on Amazon, for an extra $15-25 or even splurge a bit for a Hirsch (again, can be found on Amazon), for around $40-50 and still hit your budget. I only mention Amazon so much because you should be able to get the free shipping, which can save you anywhere from $5-15 depending on where else you might buy from. Remember to get an 18mm strap if you go with the SNK.

Unfortunately, the lower end Seikos don't really have great nighttime visibility compared to their divers like the SKXs. Neither does the Symphony, which, on the dressier side, lacks a lume altogether. I'm not sure about the lume on the MDV106, but it should be alright, given it's a dive watch.

I would probably jump on that SNK809 if I were you, but my dial color preference goes from black to blue to white.

Edit: Must have skipped the mechanical requirement, so I removed the quartz suggestions.

Timex Weekender, or perhaps one of the Seiko 5 watches like this if you want an automatic movement.

u/Hericus · 6 pointsr/Watches

My first automatic watch arrived this weekend, and I couldn't be more pleased! I decided on the SNK807 due to affordability and popularity in this community. Plus I have a tiny wrist as you can tell, and I think its 37mm case fits great! I bought 5 NATO straps from cheapestnatostraps.com and 2 perlon straps from Wrist Candy Watch Club.

NATOs -

I like them, they seem to wear comfortably and don't feel cheap, even though they were only about $6 a piece. My only complaint is that one of the straps I was sent is not what I ordered. Hopefully I can get in touch with them and sort it out.

NATO regimental strap Australia - blue, red and white

NATO regimental strap - navy and white. This one I accidentally got in 16mm, my own fault - d'oh!

NATO regimental strap Le Mans - light blue, black, and orange.

Eton NATO strap.

NATO regimental strap - gray, black, and white. I believe this is the one I received, this is the one I ordered.

I also purchased a spring bar tool from them and would not recommend it - the end was incredibly sharp and drew blood when I accidentally poked myself with it while changing out the original strap. I'm sure it would come more easily to someone who is more familiar with changing straps, but as a beginner, it was a very unpleasant experience.

Perlons -

When these arrived I was somewhat disappointed - my expectations of perlons was that they are more cloth-like, while these feel very plasticky. This just be the nature of perlons, and I was unaware of it, it's my first time hands on with them. I started wearing the blue one yesterday and it has seemed to soften up quite a bit, so they may just need some time on my wrist! I like the fact that they're adjustable, but one improvement I think they could make is to add something to stop the loop, because without the watch they can easily slide down and off the end of the band.

Beige perlon.

Blue perlon.

I will probably end up buying a leather strap for it as well, I've seen some pictures of the SNK80x on leather and I think it looks really handsome. Any suggestions?

I'm super excited to finally own an automatic, and glad I stumbled upon this subreddit! My wallet might not be as happy, I'm already lusting after a diver, probably going to pick up an SKX013 next!

u/goatboy1970 · 6 pointsr/malefashionadvice

A much better option is the Seiko 5 SNK80XK2 series. It's a quality automatic that looks almost identical to this, and still comes in at a very affordable price. Available in Beige, Green, Blue, and Black.

u/Watermellon53 · 6 pointsr/rawdenim

I asked MFA this, but I'd like your opinions too. I'm thinking of getting the Seiko 5. Blue face or Green face? And any strap suggestions (denim, leather, etc...) under $25?

u/thorma95 · 5 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

I just recently got the Seiko Men's SNK807, and would like to buy a brown leather strap for it. Any straps you guys recommend?

The SNKs sell brand new for $59 to $64 on Amazon. Why are you selling your used one for the same price?

For example, the SNK807 you're selling is $59 with free 2 day shipping on Amazon prime: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006CHML4I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_iJAbBb40PTX8A

u/dagaetch · 5 pointsr/BuyItForLife

/r/Watches has a bunch of threads on this topic, FYI.

I'm really happy with my Seiko. I added a leather watch band, and the combo looks great and works really well.

u/withfries · 4 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Nice! I have a Seiko 5 as well. In fact, I bought from Amazon too.

Just a heads up, if you do purchase, purchase from Amazon, and not one of their sellers (for example, Imperial Watches, the one linked). The reason is because Amazon is an authorized seller of Seiko 5s, and you will receive the Seiko warranty. If you purchase from one of the sellers, this is not so. In fact, it may not even be packaged in the blue Seiko box. I say this from experience - I bought one for my dad and it came in a black generic watch box.

Plus, it is an automatic watch - if anything is out of calibration, I sure don't want to open it. If there are any problems, you can simply exchange it through Amazon. I am sure the process with resellers would be more of a hassle.

You can just search for Seiko 5 blue, look at the sellers, and choose the Amazon. I've attached the links for you:

I’ve been lurking on this sub for about a year now (username checks out) but this is my first post. My wife gave me the box as a wedding gift when we got married last month, so I figured it’s about time to share my collection. As you can probably tell, I’m not really a fan of bracelets, so I’ve been experimenting with nato and perlon straps. For reference, I have 6.75” wrists. And sorry for the crappy cell phone pictures, collecting watches is my new hobby, not photography! Below is a little story about each watch.

Timex

I’m 28 years old and I was never a watch guy until I saw a picture of someone wearing this watch last year. I knew nothing about watches when I purchased it, but for $50 I decided to pick one up. I love the clean dial and I think the black case goes well with the light brown band, but the loud ticking was a bit annoying. This was my only watch for about two months, but after spending a lot of time on this sub I decided to venture into the world of automatics. This is now my “beater” watch, and since the box only holds four watches, this one has been relegated to the nightstand drawer.

Seiko

After reading r/watches high praise for Seiko 5s, I purchased one as my first automatic. I went with the blue dial because the Timex was black, and I really enjoy the color, especially in the sunlight. The stock band was pretty crappy, but I love this watch now that I switched over to a leather nato.

Tisell

After purchasing the Seiko I was getting more and more interested in watches, and fell in love with Fliegers. I wanted a Stowa but couldn’t justify the price. After seeing a picture of a Tisell posted on this sub, I knew this would be my next watch. This is now my go to watch for work. The band is surprisingly good and the domed sapphire crystal really makes this watch stand out. My only complaints are the power reserve and lume could be better.

Orient

Spending more and more time on this sub, I knew I was getting hooked. The Rolex Polar Explorer II is one of my dream watches but I can’t quite afford one yet, so I had to find another white dial watch to hold me over. Again, based on this sub’s love of Orient, I decided on the Mako USA, and I’ve been extremely happy with the purchase. I wore this watch at my wedding and bought my groomsmen black and blue Makos for their gifts. Everyone was extremely pleased!

Citizen

This is my most recent pickup, and what I’ve told myself is going to be my last watch for a while (yeah, right). The rest of my collection is made up of pretty simple/basic designs so I needed something a little louder. At first the dial looks a bit cluttered, but it’s actually very easy to read. I prefer mechanical watches, but if I’m going to go quartz, the Ecodrive is pretty cool tech… I guess it’s time for me to learn how to use a slide rule!

u/as_told_by_aaron · 4 pointsr/Watches

Congrats on your promotion buddy!
If you really want to stick to your budget, one of the best budget watches that will last a long time, have an automatic movement, numbered dial and a beautiful but small face is the SNK807. You could also use the remainder of your budget and purchase a nice metal bracelet to complete your criteria and end up with something like this.Other than that I would suggest purchasing this Invicta however there are no numbers on the actual dial. Happy hunting!

u/MegaDerppp · 4 pointsr/Watches

SNK809 for $64.99 on Jomashop
SNK807 for $66.29 on Amazon
Seiko 5 so it's a solid watch, will last a long time, has a nice legacy behind it, and looks a lot nicer than it seems on the amazon page. Just google SNK807 and click on Image search. Here's an image of the SNK807 that shows it would fit right in at work.
And a shot of SNK809 on a leather strap
Takes well to a lot of different straps, so he could change it up if he wanted to in the future with a leather strap or a perlon like in that picture.

u/AlexaviortheBravier · 3 pointsr/ftm

My first watch was this Seiko. I liked that it was mechanical and that it was casual and not a large watch. You can also replace the bands with other ones which can really change the appearance. I did have an issue where the tightest hole was a tad too big so I ended up making my own. I have really small wrists.

u/freshhorse · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'm looking to get the Seiko snk807 in the future. It seems to be a great automatic watch for the price!

u/parkinthepark · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Boost your budget up to about $60 and you can have an automatic Seiko in black, green, blue, or cream.

u/Cosmand · 3 pointsr/Watches

I am assuming you are talking about the SNK807? If so, I feel like the larger SNZG series might be a good option. The blue version is the SNZG11.

u/blackcap · 3 pointsr/Watches

that is a very high price. currently available on amazon new for less than half that amount.

u/Noopz · 3 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

What is the best recommendation for a leather band on a Seiko 5? For example this one: http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK807-Automatic-Canvas-Strap/dp/B006CHML4I/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1393811717&sr=8-6&keywords=seiko+5+blue+face

I've been thinking about buying one lately.

u/PackingPanda · 3 pointsr/Watches

how it came. It started as an snk809

u/nessgreen · 3 pointsr/Watches

The font on the Xentum is pretty unique. If that's what you like most about the watch I'm not sure where to point you. That said, the Timex weekender has a similar simple white face and you could easily swap in a red nato strap for another $15 bucks. I'd recommend a Seiko809 over the Timex because I feel like it's better bang for your dollar but, to my knowledge, they do not offer it with a white face.

Something about that watch sorta reminds me of this Braun watch but I'm not sure swapping the strap would be as easy/possible.

u/fsh5 · 3 pointsr/Seiko

I think the Seiko 5 with the 2-piece fabric strap would be a great watch for an interested kid.

It's casual, an automatic, and smaller at 37mm. $79.99 for the blue on Amazon:

I know it's a little over, but this Orient would be a pretty decent choice.

Don't buy an Invicta or August Steiner as those watches tend to be junk (lower quality than other competitors). For Seiko, there are a few good automatic Seiko 5 watches that are loved by the watch community, but they are not dressy like you wanted, or come with leather bands. Maybe if you're okay with something not dressy, these are pretty cool watches as well:

Here's the blue one

I personally like the blue one better.

Some people keep recommending Timex Weekenders. I love mine and wear it everyday, but everyone knows exactly what it is. A $20 Timex. At least with the Seiko it looks a little more elegant and from what I've heard, are damn good watches, especially for the money. That gets my vote. Just buy a nicer band.

u/TollBoothW1lly · 2 pointsr/Watches

I'm looking for an automatic aviation watch. I want an uncluttered, easy to read at a glace, black or blue face.

This is what I would love to have but can't justify: https://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-H64715885-Automatic-Stainless-Croco-Embossed/dp/B0038YY902

I would totally buy this, but can't find it available anywhere: https://www.longislandwatch.com/Orient_ER2A004D_Aviator_Watch_p/er2a004d.htm

This is what I think I am going to settle for (obviously changing the band): https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK807-Automatic-Stainless-Canvas/dp/B006CHML4I/

Am I missing anything in between?

Another vote for the seiko 5. I'm getting a navy snk this weekend. If you want a bigger dial you can opt for the more expensive snzg variant.

Seiko

  • SNK809 Black

  • SNK807 Blue

  • SNK803 Tan

  • SNK805 Green

All less than $60, small, automatic, water resistant, exhibition case back (so you can see the movement) . No leather strap though. A nice leather strap can be purchases elsewhere for pretty cheap. (18mm)
u/scalpemnoles · 2 pointsr/Watches

Alright, I'm gonna go there /r/watches...Might I suggest a Seiko SNK807 but replace the band that comes on it with the remaining money you have left. It will look really sexy (like this). The reason I say to do this is because it is a small watch that has the added perk of being an automatic. It also has an exhibition caseback which you can see in the photos on amazon, allowing him to look at the gears and balance wheel and whatnot.
edit: I just realized the amazon link I gave you doesn't show the exhibition caseback, but it looks just like it would on this watch http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK805-Automatic-Green-Canvas/dp/B000LTAY1U/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1377154665&sr=8-3&keywords=seiko+snk

u/Bradhan · 2 pointsr/Watches

But what is considered fancy? I hate arbitrary and vague language choices like that. Fancy is subjective. A Timex Expedition is fancy to a man with nothing, who only thinks about eating or finding shelter. Now I'm on a rant. Forget I said anything.

Also, so I'm not just ranting and being unhelpful, I would recommend a Seiko 5. Some can be found for around $50, although you're probably going to be stretched a little to $75 or $100. But it's a very good entry level automatic, and will most likely spur his interest in watches.

Got my very first watch! It was a difficult decision but I ended up with a Bulova Precisionist 98B257 in all black stainless steel. it has a Japanese quartz with a movement said to keep 10 seconds to the year. The dial is loaded with goodies from Day indicator between 4/5, tachymeter, a chronograph accurate to 1/1000 of a second, water resistant to 300m. Its all black red finish is perfect for my daily work attire, and easily matches my day wear super happy with this purchase! Also a great match to my red on black pc setup. now I cant wait for my Seiko 5 SNK807 too deliver.

You can get plenty of Seiko 5s for under $100, and with a blue face, then you get to add an auto to your collection

A bund style strap on pretty much any watch will solve your problem. I linked an example but you can pick whatever strap and watch you want as long as the light width matches.

This is the Seiko 5. Ever since I saw a picture of it paired with a leather strap here, I've had a close eye on it.

u/Preston205 · 2 pointsr/Watches

This seiko might work well for you. Not too big and it's a mechanical for cheap.

u/robotic_lemur · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

I'll give you a few options and let you see what you think.

Timex Easy Reader. Cheap, smaller face than the Nixon, (the player is 40mm, easy reader is 35) but a solid, smart looking watch

Casio MDV106-1A (See here for pics). $40, and you can swap the strap out for one of your choosing. I bought one off Ebay a while back for $30, and I like it. It's a bigger, chunky watch, but it's a different style to consider.

Seiko 5, ~$50 off Amazon. Mechanical movement, smallish face at 37mm, and a really great looking watch. People complain that it loses time daily, but I haven't had any problems with that. This is probably my most worn watch: I can dress it up for work or wear it casually without skipping a beat.

Check this link out for more ideas. I can't really give good feedback for any other watches, but maybe others' advice in that thread can help more.

u/Rhett_Rick · 2 pointsr/Watches

Sorry! The SNK807.

Can't beat the value of the MDV-106 and SNK80X (probably one of the few automatics you'll find at this price range worth getting), if you want some variety i'd also add the: DW5600, Weekender, Weekender Chrono

I believe he might have this blue one, http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B006CHML4I/ref=pd_aw_sim_watch_3?refRID=1M623QZA6DXD9X1P15ND. I'm on mobile so sorry if it leads to the mobile site. But there's a blue, olive and I believe even a sort of peach colored Seiko watch sold on Amazon.

u/chrispscott · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

That's odd because the SNK807 which is just the 809 in blue is water resistant to 99 feet which would be fine for hand washing and showering.

u/UnSocialite · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

It's aesthetically a good choice if your budget can't stretch the extra 40 GBP to this (chose it since it's a similar design): https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Mens-Watches/Seiko-Automatic-Black-Analogue-Display-Fabric-SNK807K2/B006CHML4I

The difference in quality is in the movement of the watch. The Timex Weekender has a quartz movement powered by a battery - which makes it little different to every 99p watch coming out of China. On the other hand, the Seiko 5 has a jewel movement powered by kinetic energy.

u/jdff6 · 1 pointr/Watches

Can someone take a look at this and tell me if it's a good deal. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B006CHML4I/ref=pd_aw_sim_241_1/154-0661270-8514457?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=TFMDMMHPM0C7BG9PK5JD

I wanted some advice before I made the purchase.

Thanks!

u/Theovide · 1 pointr/Watches

So basically, I'm buying my first watch, and I'm planning on a Seiko 5. My dilemma is wether I should buy the Seiko 5 809 or 807 (black or blue face). I kind of like the look of the 807 more, but what I'm worried about buying the 807 is that it's less versitale, I wont probably buy another watch for a little while, and I would like to be able to use it both casually and in more formal events (probably with a black or brown faux leather strap).

Tl:dr, is a blue face seiko 5 less versitale than a black face one.

I've been trying to find something that I looks good and feels comfortable on. I typically like something that doesn't feel flimsy or too thin. At the same time I'm trying to avoid something...gaudy.

Here's what I'm thinking so far (and I really would like some input please!)

First - as for the watch face I really like the Seiko 5 - I'm pretty sold on that. I'm still flip flopping between the blue and black face though. I'm thinking blue face with a brown leather strap.

The strap is where I need some help. I'm a big fan of the double buckle layout - but again...I don't want it too gaudy. I'm looking at two - one is a cuff band (which is the one I think may be a bit..too much. And the second is just any normal brown strap - Hirsch and Crown and Buckle are what I've been checking out.

This one is the cuff strap.

And I really like this band from Crown and Buckle.

Any thoughts?

u/darkon · 1 pointr/gadgets

After my reply to you, I ordered a Seiko 5. Blue face, blue canvas strap. I don't know how much I'll use it, but I think I'll be pleased to have it.

u/Datsnake · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I'm considering buying a Seiko 5. I've never really worn a watch, but this looks great.
I'm pale, darkish hair and green eyes. I don't know if I should pick the black or navy blue watch.

navy blue

black

I have tiny wrists (just shy of 6") though. I'm wondering if it will look stupid.

u/imagoodusername · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I loved/hated my Timex Weekender.

I loved the NATO strap and the low-profile/smaller size. It fit easily under shirt cuffs, which a watch should do. The Weekender is a normal sized watch by historical standards although it may seem a little small by today's standards. Watches historically were not the chunky 45mm+ sizes that you see today.

I hated that mine ticked loudly. Also the finish of the Weekender leaves a lot to be desired.

Another budget friendly alternative would be a Seiko 5. Bear in mind that Seiko 5s are automatic, whereas Timex weekender is quartz powered (meaning the Seiko should be less accurate but it runs without a battery).

Check out /r/watches for my advice.

u/notevenkiddin · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I'd say a Seiko 5-series. Automatic, smaller like the weekender, fairly simple design, around $60.

I have this one with a brown leather nato strap I made for it.

No it's not a particularly great brand and the majority of the watches you see marked down on amazon are permanently marked down - the original price is super inflated to try and trick you into thinking you're getting a good deal.

Check out r/watches to see some options in that price range.

Here's some that you might like: Seiko, Timex, Casio.

u/Metroid_Dread · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I'd love that white with a blue stripe band for my blue Seiko 5

u/faaaaaaaasterrrrr · 1 pointr/Watches

If you're looking for a nice casual watch that is also stylish, I'll submit this: a Seiko SNK807. Don't let the price point fool you, this is a great value (automatic movement, very well built, stylish and will look good on your wrist...I have smaller wrists too). You can also get an aftermarket leather band fairly easily, and the dials come in multiple colors.

u/Cr1m · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I tend to wear black, white, grey, and some blue, and I'm looking to get a Seiko 5. I'm looking at thiswatch: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006CHML4I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_RVKUAbRFQQ2EA) in particular, but I'm wondering if I should go with a black Seiko 5 because I wear way more monochrome. Then again maybe the watch can be a splash of color? What do you guys think?

u/bluegarfield · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Thanks. kind of skeptical about nylon strap for working adult, but I guess for IT tech staff anything is fine.
About color, I guess the black one is best to go with? They seem to have blue and beige as well, although the beige might look a bit funny on guy wrist

u/Aodaliyan · 1 pointr/Astronomy

3 of the 5 people I shared an office with at uni wore one of these https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK807-Automatic-Stainless-Canvas/dp/B006CHML4I/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1496254003&sr=8-4&keywords=seiko+5+military

So theres a watch thats worn by astronomers...

u/kurazaybo · 1 pointr/Watches

For a bit more I would go for the SRP147. There are other variations in silver case with green dial.

I think it is worth it. First, it is made in Japan (most 5s are not, just the movement comes from Japan though I am unsure if it comes fully assembled; then it's cased elsewhere). Second, the movement is a 4r36 or derived from it, looks quite good. It features hacking and handwinding and definitely is a few steps above the basic Seiko 5. The nylon band is also much better than on the base Seiko 5. My hesitation now is only about the durability of the black finish. I've seen it in person and it looks and feels fantastic.

Edit: just in case you like gold

u/blues1110 · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

> or slip-through (like a Weekender) you will need to get a spring bar tool to take the old strap off. The watch band does

Would I need one for a Seiko 5 like this: http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK807-Automatic-Canvas-Strap/dp/B006CHML4I/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1418872121&sr=8-5&keywords=seiko+5+automatic? Sorry for bombarding you when I should be asking the seller...

u/Consolol · 1 pointr/Watches

There's a few colorways for that particular style. Here's black on black. There's also blue.

Would you prefer a metal bracelet instead? I personally have this. The stock photo doesn't do it justice. The bezel and sides of the case have a nice polish, and the brush isn't as flat as the photo looks. It also looks great on black leather. I wouldn't buy it at the current price of $99 though - I got it for $62, so you might want to shop around.

u/johnwclark · 1 pointr/Watches

I agree with LawsListens on this, and we have very similar opinions. I think this is a case where you need to determine what makes it seem cheap to you. For some it is the seemingly random colors on many of the plastic models.

My favorite cheap black model is the Casio F105, but they got it down to blue and grey on black. I think putting these on a nato strap makes them look really sharp, and much less cheap. If you want a silver case look at the Casio A158, or the Royale ( AE1200 ). I have the F105 ( and a couple G-Shocks, but these are way too thick based on what you said ).

There are some nice "Ana-Digi" models that have a small LCD display on an analog watch, and might give you some of what you want, like this AW49, or this AW80. I have never bought any of this, but they seem like a good middle ground.

If you want something a bit more "office acceptable", you probably need to go pure analog, but you are going to give up a number of cool functions that you may use from your digital. If you want something that is inexpensive and tough Casio Duro MDV106, it is a 200m diver, with a stainless steel case, and a screw down crown. These can usually be found for $45-60, but it has some size to it at 44mm. Probably my favorite, under the radar pick is the SNK80x, personally I like the SNK807 ( navy blue ) or the 803 ( beige ), but they are all the same great watch, and usually under $70. I own both of these.

u/AquaQuartz · 1 pointr/Watches

Some of the Seiko 5s are actually quite inexpensive. I'm wearing this one as we speak, and if you set up a camelcamelcamel alert, you can probably get it for under $60 (it was ~$65 when I bought it).

u/imisstheyoop · 1 pointr/Watches

I will echo a couple of the comments on this thread: those are pretty different watches, and I would go mechanical if it were me.

A couple of good suggestions in your price range that are of similar style to what you posted:

https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK809-Automatic-Stainless-Canvas/dp/B002SSUQFG/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1473819341&sr=1-1&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=seiko+5

https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK807-Automatic-Stainless-Canvas/dp/B006CHML4I/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1473819341&sr=1-3&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=seiko+5

https://www.amazon.com/Orient-ER24001B-Bambino-Automatic-Mechanical/dp/B00529W5CK/ref=sr_1_6?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1473819180&sr=1-6&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=orient+bambino

Note that a couple of those come with canvas straps. Straps are very easily switched out however. And they are a bit cheaper than what you're looking at currently. Both Seiko watches also have open case backs which are a nice plus imo.

Best of luck with whatever watch you go with!

Would you consider a bundled trade? I have a Citizen BM6010-55A and a Seiko SNK807, along with some nice leather and perlon straps.

u/MyFaceOnTheInternet · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

This seiko is a nice automatic with a blue face

I like this one more but cant find on a metal band

That is an easy fix though, I put mine on a nice leather band. So it looks like This

u/grand_royal · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

What about a Seiko 5, you can change the band.

Edit: I have a Seiko 5, is a very nice reasonably priced workhorse of a watch, and it looks nice IMO

u/Auginis · 1 pointr/Watches

I'm not sure if I need more water resistance really. I'm looking for a watch that I could wear casually.

And for whatever reason Seiko SNZG13 in UK costs way more than in the US.
What do you think about SNK807 or SNXS77K?

Thanks

u/ivan927 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

The venerable Seiko 5 and many of its variants, for well under your budget

Proven automatic movement, meaning no batteries are required. Cloth strap, handsome (IMO) clean dial. Will last you a lifetime of use if taken care of.

u/TKDbeast · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

What watch bands would look best with a blue Seiko 5?

u/rickrossroll · 0 pointsr/Watches

This is completely unrelated to your questions. Full disclosure: I'm not a fan of the submariner variants/ metal band watches. I'd rather do something like this for a daily watch http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK807-Automatic-Canvas-Strap/dp/B006CHML4I/ref=pd_sbs_watch_3. Those sxx's seem better paired with a suit/blazer/formal situation.
