That's a terrifying feeling.

We had to do similar when our little guy managed to get out of his room and out the front door during nap time. We immediately installed a chain lock up high so that he could not reach it, as well as door knob covers. (Land lords will get over it.)

I can't give you much info about tracking systems though. I would suggest at least an ID bracelet/necklace with his important information on it: http://www.medicalert.org/

When you said you were thinking of something that could clip to his shoes, I immediately thought of the nike + sensor that works with iphones/ipod touch. I know they have a GPS version of 'something' but I don't know if it's able to be used as a tracking system. That said, the locator system you have found looks like you could just as easily slip that sensor into something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Tune-Belt-Sensor-Pouch-Sport/dp/B001KP3NZS/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1343352288&sr=8-4&keywords=nike+sensor+shoe+pocket

I used a treadmill to keep track until W6D3, when I learned the local rec center had a free indoor track. Pretty much perfect timing, as I was to the point where I only had one running section each day. Now I just set the alarm on my iPod to ring after time is up (I wear it in an armband).

I tried to use a program the other day to see how far I was going, but it didn't work at all... unless I really only made it .91 miles in 28 minutes. I can't just count my laps because it is a super tiny track (12.5 laps per mile), so I easily lose track if I'm not focusing on counting. I actually ran 30 minutes today, so I've technically finished time-wise, I just would like to make sure I'm hitting 5k in distance. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to measure that, because I want to sort of skip the scheduled week 9 and shoot for 5k distance all next week.

EDIT: Does anybody have any experience with Nike+? I have a 4th generation iPod touch, do I need to buy the $20 sensor or is the app capable of tracking without it? All the info I find seems to be conflicting...

EDIT2: Ahh... how seldom FAQs are actually read. $20 will motivate me to keep running, I suppose, as this seems like it'll work. I don't have the proper shoes, but I'm going to pick up something like this which will work for anything.

Nope not necessary. They are useful though in certain circumstances. It serves as a pedometer for your run but also does more. The gps calibrates it to your stride so that if for some reason you lose a gps signal during the run, the sensor can take over and still, fairly accurately, keep track of the distance you've run. I'm not sure, but I think it will still keep track of all your other data as well, just not as accurately as the gps would. It's a nice little failsafe I guess! There are simple ways of attaching it to your shoe if you don't have Nikes. Things like this look pretty legit to me.
