If William Gibson(Not the scifi writer, but the theater critic. I can't seem to find a decent bio of him.) were to watch this video, I imagine he would say exactly what has been expressed in this sub-thread. The end (storytelling-wise) was lacking a bit of something. As an animator yourself, I would highly recommend reading his book, Shakespeare's Game

You obviously have a great capacity for understanding what is important in the telling of a story. If you haven't read Shakespeare's Game, I would highly recommend it. It can facilitate communication between storytellers and non-storytellers greatly.

>But only when this transformation is complete does the idol finally come back (that's the final "pop" you hear before credits).

This is what I got from the movie, but it took an extra bit of effort - and I might have come to a very different conclusion. Also, it was enough of a distraction that I forgot for a moment how the story began. In other words, I had to work in a different way to get the final message out of the story: this might be intended, or might not. The story opens, as I remember it:

  • Entering
  • Spotting the idol through the wheel
  • Lighting the oil

Then comes the middle of the story: Learning to play, instead of desire.

When the door closed behind him, why did the light go out? There seems to be a conciousness controlling the mechanism popping out idols. I pictured it as one guy (or ghost) pulling a lever to pull them out. One choice (probably not a great one) would be to let us see that force.

I'd really like to have seen the light going out naturally, and a full 'resetting' of the system in place - maybe the floor drops out as it dims, so all the other idols would be back underground - also reminding us of how things were before the scene was set, and emphasizing the changes our lovable character have gone through.

If I had children, I'd get them a Bazi toy to play with, and use it to teach them about how it is ok to change your habits when you learn something new (to avoid stubbornness of character) If more Bazi videos are being made, and you are looking for an antagonist, it would probably be based around that kind of concept, although I can't say specifically what that would be - it's not my story.

    Thanks for posting this!
