By any chance have you seen Sergio Toppe's Sharaz-de: Tales from the Arabian Nights? It's a gorgeously rendered (seriously, the art is stunning) re-telling of the Arabian Night's tales. It only has a few tales, but they're all interesting. I particularly liked Falcon, Falcon, My Friend.

I do NOT think this is what you are talking about. But I can't stop thinking about it. This probably is not what you looked at about 5 or 6 years ago, but several things do fit [kind of] and I figure it can't hurt to post this here.

This author/artist is immensely famous in other parts of the world, but his works had never been published in the US until almost 6 years ago when this volume was published, so it attracted a very large amount of attention. I bought it right away when it was published.

It is a illustrated story - a graphic novel - composed of a collection of the "Tales" that this man had worked on for years. He is now deceased. It takes place in a fantasy unidentifiable place that resembles parts of Arabia and Persia. It's based on the "1001 Nights" stories, and it contains elements of the stories of what you mention [kind of].

But most importantly, due to the prestige of this author/artist and the release of this book, it would have been available in libraries 5 or 6 years ago!!

The first link is where it is available. But the second link is what you want to look at. If you click on the "Look Inside" right above the book image on Amazon, you will get to see inside pages, and you will be able to know right away if this is or is not familiar to you. I realize this might not be what you mean.

Even if this is not what you once read, I highly recommend this book to anyone reading this who is interested in graphic storytelling with magnificent world famous art.
