oh well yea, i didnt actually catch him saying ipod there, because there are actually some really good earbuds out there, i mean you can go drop a grand on a pair but there are seriously some good ones in the $70-200 range as well that are better than beats over the ear shit
I use the Shure SE 846 in ear monitors in conjunction with the Shure RMCE-BT2 5.0 mmcx cable. Most of the time I use the 846s wireless, but I keep the original cable on hand in the event I run out of battery on the wireless cable (rare since it has 8 hours of battery life).
The whole setup is super small and lightweight, yet the sound and noise isolation is amazing. Steep price for the 846s I know, but almost every part is user serviceable, so it is cheap and easy to maintain for many many years.

For $50 you could get a nice set of Mee Audio M6Pro...good neutral sound with a ton of accessories and even a hardshell carrying case, so they stay intact and last forever.

Shure SE846 if your budget is low, otherwise go for the 64 Audio U18.
Buy these earphones and you wont look at a speaker again because then you wont have any savings left to buy a speaker.
