If price is an issue I'd stay away from "styled" brands such as Skull Candy, Beats by Dre etc as you pay very much for just the brand name.

EDIT: Personally I use a pair of these which I'd recommend a lot. I did a quick check online and the Sure SRH 440 seem to be getting good reviews and are very cheap.

u/DeliciousTea · 5 pointsr/headphones

That's great but we have been giving you recommendations and you have been ignoring them. Everything Xodium recommended would work. Anything from the sidebar links in your price range will work.

Here, I'll even do the work for you:

Fostex T50RP

Shure SRH440

Incipio F38

Koss PortaPro

Grado SR80i

ATH M50

If you're a not a fucking audiophile, then ANY of these headphones will be fine for you. All of them are a better value than Beats/Bose. If you will be using it primarily on the train, pick a closed headphone for noise isolation, like the ATH M50 or Incipio F38.

There, done.

Looking for a good pair of headphones for listening to musis and gaming on my laptop.

Budget: Flexible around $100

Source: My laptop (I use it as a desktop so I do not need these headphones to be portable)

Type of Headphone: Closed Headphones

Preferred Tonal Balance: Semi balanced leaning towards bass but still able to have a wide range. (I'm new to this so if you think this is wrong for the type of music I am listening to just tell my please)

Past Headphones: JVC IEMS. I still have them and will continue to use them for portable use.

Preferred Music: Electronic( Nightcore, Nightstep, Dubstep, House, Trap, Glitch Hop, etc.) Classic Rock.

Location: USA

Headphones I am looking at right now: Right now I have had Sony MDR10Rs, Shure SRH440s, and V-MODA Crossfade LPs all recommended for me and I think they suit what I am looking for and want to know your opinions.

Side Note I have also been recommended m50's by audiotechnica but someone else here said they are uncomfortable and have too narrow a soundstage for gaming.

u/[deleted] · 4 pointsr/headphones

My friend has these and loves them. A lot of people swap out the pads though, since they're kind of uncomfortable.

u/Sup909 · 3 pointsr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

What is your budget? For the sake of discussion I am going to assume $100.

Depending on how fun or serious you want to get and he intends or currently makes music, there are a lot of ways to go.

You can certainly buy him some plugins or a sample pack. The Vengence ones are usually pretty good. A ton of VST's can be had for around $100. Discovery DSP I think for example would be excellent. Others here can probably give you a ton of suggestions on that.

Headphones. The Shure SRH440's are probably my favorite studio headphones in the $100 price range.

A DAW: Depending on what he has or uses. Tracktion, Reaper, Renoise or even a version of FlStudio can be had for $100.

Synths: For some fun tweaking the Korg Monotrons are $49 a piece The soon to be released Volca series is $150 a piece.

Also a midi keyboard is a great investment or a 4x4 pad set.

Finally, what about a 1 on 1 session with another artist. I know an artist (Silverfilter) who has a studio and actively does one on one courses. Not sure what he charges, but worth sending him a message. https://www.facebook.com/silverfilterofficial?directed_target_id=0

u/kevinwoodward · 3 pointsr/dubstep

Fucking love my Shure-440's.
$90 right now

Also, get these if you can as they are way more comfortable

u/Flyingpolish · 3 pointsr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

I have the Shure SRH 440s. Really good and highly rated. You can get them from Amazon for $79. Their customer service and warranty are also amazing. The swivel for one side snapped and I was able to return it and get a brand new one within a week.

u/coconutcream · 3 pointsr/headphones

Well in that case the AD700s might not be entirely suitable. People around you will be able to hear what you are listening to.

Perhaps these Shures might be more suitable. They are well reviewed and will have will have good sound isolation.

A lot of these closed headphones, although not as comfortable as the opens, can be listened to at borderline unsafe levels and people around you can't even tell you are listening to anything.

Again, although out of your price range, I would have to recommend the ATH-M50s based on your requirements.

u/digitalskyfire · 2 pointsr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

Well, your problem could be any number of places, but a proper mixing situation is almost more important than any other aspect.

If you need to stay with headphones, try this model from Shure, they're great. If 138 quid is too much, you can go down a step with these ones (also from Shure).

Getting a good pair of monitors would be better, of course, but maybe that's not an option for you. These can be good alternatives.

u/getoutofheretaffer · 2 pointsr/headphones

Check out the Shure SRH440.

EDIT: The Audio Technica M40X is built better and costs a bit less.

u/VlRU5 · 2 pointsr/headphones

"Preferred Tonal Balance" is simply how do you like your music, example: "I listen to Rap so I want as much bass as possible!". With your taste it would be safe to say you want a bit more bass.

Personally I wouldn't recommend buying something from Bose unless you really wanted good noise-cancellation (tip: you don't). They are a bit pricey for what you get.
At that price range you might want to check out headphones from Audio Technica, specifically the M50's or the M40X's. Now I like the M50's because they have nice slightly punchy bass but it doesn't overpower the rest of the song. Sounds pretty good with Glitch-Hop and other electronic music in general IMO. I've had them for 3 years now and is a solid common go-to with their sweet price tag.

The list goes on and on since around $100 is where you start getting good headphones but i'll throw in another two headphones for you to consider: Shure's SRH440. For more bass, check out the V-MODA Crossfade LP. They're quite stylish, come in lots of colors and have a more bassy sound. V-MODA has a few other headphone line-ups you might like if you like their headphones.

Hope that helps, give us updates!

u/ohebb · 2 pointsr/dubstep

I have a pair of Shure S440's that I got as a gift and I love them. You can get them on amazon for around $90 bucks.

u/mpfour · 2 pointsr/electrohouse

Shure SRH 440, Sennheiser HD-280 Pro, AKG K-240

All at or under $100. Keep in mind you can buy the best headphones in the world with the biggest bass but your ipod or laptop lack the ability to power them without a pocket or desktop amplifier. These three are all well suited for normal, non-studio use with ipods or laptops. Not to mention they look badass. Happy listening!

u/xsoccer92x · 2 pointsr/headphones

For that type of music I would recommend the following two headphones

Shure SRH440 & NVX Audio XPT100

u/whiskeyjamboree · 1 pointr/buildapc

The 280's are like clamps, and lack bass. It is there, but not woofy, or low. The mdr's are a bit boring, but that could be considered a good thing, as it is also known as neutral.

I have owned both, if I had to choose between the two it would be http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DP1FTU/sr=8-7/qid=1369600768/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1369600768&seller=&sr=8-7 this pair instead of what you have listed. Smoother delivery of sound. More comfortable.

Budget: 200-300

Source: Zune first Gen, 80 GB. Note 2

Requirements for Isolation: doubt I'll get any dancing type earclip type set of cans that are isolated but yes I prefer isolation.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? Yes, but not much.

Preferred Type of Headphone: Full sized, closed

Preferred tonal balance: Balanced

Past headphones: Koss Ksc75, Darth Beyer Dt770s 80 ohms, Shure SRH440 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DP1FTU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), JVC HARX900 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013P3ZOE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Preferred Music: EDM trap right now. Then 90s gangsta rap (2pac, bone thugs, ice cube) LOVE IT. Dubstep, Hard Rock, indie. Mainly bass heavy trap tho. Future bass as well.
What would you like to improve on from your set-up? Sounds very good with some power to the bass, doesn't look too bad, and stays on my fuckin ears... I dance HARD. It's gloriously therapeutic, but not when I step on the chord and break my $400 pair of cans that cost me $200 to fix last time.

u/the_monster_consumer · 1 pointr/headphones

I'm not at all familiar with open headphones at that price point, but for what you want them for closed back sounds like the way to go.

My first suggestion is the JayCar Pro Monitor. At only $50 it is good value and you probably couldn't do better, at least closed back, for the price.

If you can stretch your budget you are into Shure SRH440 and Sennheiser HD280 territory. Of these I would personally go for the Shure.

u/Th3Komo12 · 1 pointr/headphones

Alright so I looked through the different recommendations and picked out a couple of different things but before I buy them I figured y'all should look at them to make sure they are good choices.

Here is what I have picked out

  • IEMs JVC HAFX40B

  • Over Ear Shure SRH440

  • DAC and AMP FiiO E10K

Here is more information in case there is something that would work better for me

  • Budget - $200ish for everything

  • Source - Windows Computers and Android Phone (Nexus 6p)

  • Requirements for Isolation - A lot would be great trying to block out random noises to study better

  • Will you be using these Headphones in Public? I will be using the IEMs in public more than the Over Ears

  • Preferred Type of Headphone - Do you want IEMs, full-sized, or on-ear? IEMs and On-ear

  • Preferred tonal balance - I am not sure but probably balanced

  • Past headphones - Never really had a nice pair I usually just used crappy gaming headphones or earbuds

  • Preferred Music - Almost exclusively rap particularly trap

  • What would you like to improve on from your set-up - To actually have decent sound

u/framburglar · 1 pointr/dubstep

I think its between the Sony MDR-7505 and the Shure 440. Which do u recommend?

u/tsrocks48 · 1 pointr/qotsa

Shure SRH440. They're not too expensive, and you'll get killer sound for your cash. Best headphones I've ever owned.

u/MPotatoe · 1 pointr/headphones

Maybe these?

u/LauriCular · 1 pointr/headphones

Have a look at the Lindy HF-100, you probably won't get better for under EUR100. A few more Europennies will get you a Shure SRH440

u/spunkycorndog · 1 pointr/headphones
  • Budget - $100

  • Source - Iphone 5

  • Requirements for Isolation - moderate isolation preferred

  • Preferred Type of Headphone - Full sized, on or over ear fine

  • Preferred tonal balance - Balanced.

  • Past headphones - AE1's (don't kill me)
  • Preferred Music - a lot of lo-fi acoustic songs, some punk, rock

Basically looking for the best sound in this price range, and I don't really know too much about headphones. I'll be wearing them out and about (walking on busy streets), and in the library

something like the Koss ProDJ100's? ($72)

Or maybe the Sennheiser Momentum On-ears? ($90)

    Shure SRH440 ($97)

    Open to any suggestions!
u/PeanutButterMarmite · 1 pointr/dubstep

Get yourself some high end headphones. Doesn't need to be ludicrously expensive, just made by a company that knows what it's doing. I myself got these for when no one else in the house wants to hear my dubstep :P They're very good.

u/IngoGarza · 1 pointr/FL_Studio

Had a couple of Shure srh440 two years ago. The bass was pretty solid but the mids are a bit recessed(am I using that word corectley?).

They were also a bit uncomftable wearing for long periods of time, I would say after 2 hours your head starts to feel heavy.

I switched to AKG K 242 HD but I felt they lacked in the bass department. But I would say they are more versatile and more well balacned, just a little weak on the bass for my taste. On the other hand they are great for longer studio sessions as you almost forget you are wearing them because they are, in my honest opinion, the most comfortable headphones I have ever used. They recently broke, me being all clumbse and what not, so now I'm thinking of also buying a couple of new headphones so good timing on your part haha.

u/QuipA · 1 pointr/headphones

Have a look at the Shure SRH440

a little above your budget, but exactly what you are looking for. If you want a cheaper pick, consider the Takstar PRO80 / Gemini HSR1000

u/MyLostYouth · 1 pointr/AskReddit

The Beats are fine if you're listening to music that's already bass-heavy and you don't mind headphones that color your sound a bit (honestly, most people can't notice). They're a bit pricey but they get the job done and in my opinion don't sound bad at all. I'd stay away from Bose, overpriced and the sound is mediocre at best.

If you are looking for a truer representation of what was recorded I'd look into something like the Shure SRH-440 I've had them for awhile and for the money they're the best headphones I've ever used. As someone else said take a look at Sennheiser and Etymotic as well (Etymotic's in-ear headphones are amazing as well).

Hope I could help and good luck!

Budget: $50-$200 CAD

Location: Ontario, Canada

Source: standard USB port (need more info?)

Isolation: For use at my home desk. Need some cancellation (I live with 3 others); just enough to not annoy them.
Public?: Not at all

Type: Over-ear

Tonal balance: I have very little knowledge about this, but I will be mainly using them for gaming and Skype. I think balanced?

Music: Classic rock, but mainly just games on my PC.

Past headphones: Logitech G430;

Pros: comfortable, mic (not needed), decent sound (not a huge audio expert though), straight wire.

Cons: white noise when silent (I like to wear them whenever I'm at my desk), pretty quiet overall (even at max.), controls on wire in the way.

Improvements: Though I have little knowledge on audio terms or concepts, I want next-to-no white noise (sound & mic) and surround-sound (Virtual? As smooth as possible).

Comfort is a must, since I often game for hours at a time. An attached mic is not necessary (apparently they often suck), but I'd like it to be on the headset (like a separate, attachable one). I'm also used to straight cables; coiled ones just seem too in-the-way (but I may be wrong).

What I've found: (based of Amazon reviews alone) Too lazy to find Amazon.ca ones ATM, hopefully I can ship here.

Drop the headset. You're already getting a pretty damn good mic, so I'd recommend the hd598 if you listen to more traditional music, crossfade LP if you like electronica or rap srh440 if you don't care and just want something that sounds totally neutral, like in a studio.

Probably get a mechanical keyboard instead of the apex, I recommend the CM Quickfire TK, Logitech g710+ or the Corsair K70.

u/fco2013 · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

For home use only (or on-the-go if you're brave, these all leak sound):

Sennheiser HD558

Sennheiser HD518

AKG K240

Audio-Technica ATH-AD500X

Grado SR80e

For both at home or on the go:

Shure SRH440 *

V-Moda Crossface M80

Sennheiser Momentum on-ear

Sony MDRV6 *

have longer cables.

It's not so much a durability thing but a usability thing. You won't to hear everything going you in the subway while listening to music, and the people around you don't want to hear your music either. So that is why I recommend open headphones for home-use only, and closed back if you need pair for both applications.

For the most these headphones are easy to drive, and you should be able to power them straight out of your phone or computer.

I highly suggest reading reviews for all of these as they are very different from each other. My
personal* picks for each application:

At home:

Grado Sr80e

Both:

Sennheiser momentum

Also check out /r/headphones and head-fi.org, both are great resources.

Ok, after some years my grado igrado has broken and I'm looking for a replacement, I think I prefer a balanced sound, and the most important thing for me is that the new ones don't warm my ears too much (I have a sennheiser pc350 that I can't use too much because my ears get too sweaty), so with that in mind...

Budget - around 150€
Source - Mainly a sound blaster zxr but I'll probably use them with my laptop and phone from time to time.
Requirements for Isolation - I actually prefer that I can hear the outside world, but it's not a requirement.
Preferred Type of Headphone - on-ear but I'm open to anything.
Preferred tonal balance - Balanced.
Past headphones - Grado iGrado and sennheiser pc350, both somewhat modified.
Preferred Music - I'll use them for movies, gaming and music, and the music that I listen... well a little bit of almost everything (mainly indie and electronic, though, think radiohead, the national, beck, mogwai... )
What would you like to improve on from your set-up - Just better overall, I guess?
Location - Switzerland and Spain

After reading a lot (including several buyer's guides and the like) I have several candidates, but I'm open to others, they are (in no particular order):
Noontec Zoro HD II
V-MODA XS-Metal
Sennheiser HD 25-1-II Basic Edition
Sennheiser PX 100-II i
Sennheiser URBANITE
Shure SRH440
Koss PORTA PRO CLASSIC

So, as you can see, I'm quite a bit lost, any recommendation?

u/SilenceIsntGold · 0 pointsr/oculus

Why are you the second person to cite that and cite it incorrectly?

Can no one who watches that listen to what he says? He flat out says the only reason his earbuds were bad is because they didn't have enough cable length between the point where the wires split and each ear. He directly says that earbuds with slightly longer cables would probably work fine.

Having them go behind your head is absolutely perfect. Runners set it up like that because it gets the cables completely out of the way. Just don't be stupid to use a pair that is too short for this.

His "wired" headset was a usb headset and his problem is that the cable is really long. First, using a usb headset for gaming is very stupid. Second, you should be using a headset that has a 3.5mm cable jack so you can use any cable of any length.

A quality headset like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DP1FTU
Use a 6in cable and nothing will hang down at all.

I am starting to think this guy has really stupid people watching his videos and he isn't doing enough to combat that stupidity, simply telling people things isn't enough. Maybe he should have an on screen graphic?
