It is a game changer for a few reasons. First of all, it eliminates the entire hassle of making a mess. Just put your bottle on the scale and start adding flavors. But also, everybody publishing recipes is using a scale, so it ensures that you're on the same page as everyone else (measuring by weight). It is extremely accurate as long as you have one of the recommended scales, which should measure down to 0.01g. I paid $13.99 for my scale on Amazon and its fantastic. The most important advice for choosing a scale IMO is to find one that doesn't auto shut-off constantly. Some scales are set to shut down with 15-30 seconds of inactivity which can be irritating.

The most commonly recommended scale for DIY Mixing is the American Weigh Scales LB-501, which can be plugged in to the wall and has no auto-shut off that way.
So /r/DIY_eJuice has all this information, using the search function and looking in the sidebar will reveal a lot of this. I know it can be daunting as I have been there myself but even lurking in the sub for a while will help.
Firstly though, yes it can be cheaper than buying juice but be prepared for a bit of an up front cost whilst you stock pile on flavours, PG/VG, nic and hardware.
What is suggested for your first flavour purchase is to look for recipes that you like the look of or see if there are clones of your favourite juice and work from there.
There are plenty of clone threads:
Other great resources for recipes are:
I would suggest mixing by weight, and this post by /u/Botboy141 explains it very well.
For supplies I would recommend the following from personal experience;
Flavourings
Nicotine
VG/PG
Disposables
Hardware
Resources
Chefs Vapour or Just Vape 24/7 for flavourings, and PirateVapes for nicotine. You can get a good deal from FlavourArt directly if you want to buy 6+ in one go - look for the "Super Six" deal.
Ebay or Amazon for PG/VG - "Classikool" brand is super cheap and good quality
Just be aware that the popular concentrates normally sell out very fast, so you'll almost never be able to get a full set of flavourings from one shop :(
Also you may want to check out /r/DIY_eJuice for recipes and other useful bits of information - the best advice I got from there when I started, was to mix by weight - it literally takes 5 minutes to make a mix, and 0 time for cleanup! Here's a nice cheap scale that is in 0.01g increments. That's all you need!
I've been happy with this one. The trays it comes with offer some protection for it when storing as well.

Hello!
I suggest heading over to /r/DIY_eJuice and reading all the info in the sidebar. There are a few getting started guides that were really helpful when I started out.
My other suggestion is look for recipes that sounds good to you. Pick 5 or so, then buy the ingredients needed for those. This is a much better way to start than buying a bunch of flavours and realising you're always missing ingredients for the recipes you find.
If you're looking for a good scale, I bought This One and it works amazingly. I just started mixing over the weekend and I'm glad I chose to go the weight scale route. I couldn't imagine dealing with graduated cylinders and syringes.
As mentioned Vapour Depot is great for concentrates.
I use Amazon for VG and PG (classikool).
Check out ibottles.co.uk for your bottle needs.
Get yourself a digital scale that goes to 0.01g such as this
Try Darkstar for nicotine.
Get yourself some rubber gloves for when handling the nicotine.
Then you should be all set
Edit: Use e-liquid-recipes.com for trying out and keeping track of recipes as well as using there calculator
Second what /u/aMegalodon said.
Also, that scale is great but it did seem a bit pricey. Here is the scale that I decided to go with and it is great: Scale
Right out of the box it was accurate to +/-.01. This is based of weighing a brand new nickel which is suppose to weigh 5g.
The only issue with this scale is the 2 min. auto-off function. It has never happened to me because I am fairly fast at mixing and changing ingredients but that could be an issue for someone out there. Hope this helps.
How accurate is "really" accurate? I use this one that has a 500g capacity with a 0.01g precision, which for my needs is perfect.
It's not 0.001g precision, but I don't particularly need that level of precision, and the ones I've seen with that precision were like >500$, so....
edit: typo
I bought and returned a couple that I was not happy with before getting the one below from Amazon. It's very inexpensive and surprisingly accurate.

you might consider a cheap-o scale like this. I like to do:
You'll have to adjust it to your beans and specific grind size, but I would think that a 3m overall time is a little long for such a fine grind.
I ordered 2 of those and both came DoA. I went with http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ME8VI34/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and seems to be working well.
I've been using this for the last month and it's been pretty decent, no complaints.
Whilst searching I also found this which seems to be a cheaper version that also weighs up to 2000G, seems that I missed that one :|
Just an FYI for those interested.
I've been using this one ($20):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ME8VI34/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1418214176&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX200_QL40
Been working quite well. I've mixed 8 bottles so far, without auto shut off issues. I believe it shuts off after 2 minutes, but I prepare everything before I start weighing and it's been fine.
I picked up these scales and this calibration weight from Amazon.
The scale does have an auto off feature which cannot be disabled but if you're well organised you won't notice. If I need to grab something I just tap the scale every so often and reset the counter.
So i am looking for a new scale and came across this one on amazon. The largest i mix is 120ml bottles and was wondering if anyone has any experiences with this scale. Seeing as it wont get overloaded until 500g i feel like this should work for what i need. Any input or suggestions greatly welcomed.

I picked up this one on Amazon some time ago. I absolutely love it. Only downside is it won't weigh any of my bars upwards of 20+ ozt. It goes to hundredths in ozt.
So this is my first time mixing and I got my order a few days ago. My problem : I only taste VG on all my mixes.
My first try was DIY or Die's Fried Ice Cream using syringes (the scale only arrived today). Probably messed up the dosages but it's ok, I only made 5 ml.
Fast-forward to today, I receive my scale and try to mix Fried Ice Cream again but this time with a scale. I make 10 ml and decide to try it immediately ; I'm not expecting anything great but it was really bad. It tasted like a dry-hit without the cotton actually burning and a bitter aftertaste. I try the other recipe in the video, Strawberry milkshake, mix it, shake it and again, same taste, no other flavor.
Maybe the problem is coming from the steeping time, so I try the mix I made a few days ago with the syringes : same taste, time apparently didn't help.
I thought this was caused by TPA Strawberry (Ripe) so I tried to mix it alone, at 8% in a 5ml (70/30). Again, same horrible taste but I can't feel the Strawberry. I try to add 2 drops of EM to see if there is a difference : nothing changed.
I decided to vape the VG alone to see if it was causing the problem, this is definitely the only thing I'm tasting in every other mix.
How can I know if the VG is bad or if it's just me? Should I contact the seller? The batch number is written on the bottle, can I just ask him to check? Thanks in advance and sorry if I'm not clear !
The scale you have shown is accurate to 0.1 gram. this is not accurate enough. You need a .001 gram scale.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ME8VI34
0.01 scale for 16 pounds
0.001 scale for 20 pounds
They are accurate (checked with coins, and you can get calibration weights). I just don't see how eyeballing the level on the syringe would be more accurate than a 0.01g scale.
I guess speed is relative and up to personal preference. For me personally, using a scale is much faster and less materials to waste.
I can't speak to the quality of this product whatsoever, but it's got quite a good bit of good reviews on Amazon, and matches the bill exactly.

if you want to be really lazy, you can just use single flavour mixes, like
Company | Flavour | Reccomended
---|---|----
DIYFS | Holy Vanilla | 3%
Inawara| Strawberry Shisha | 2%
Capella | Harvest Berry | 6%
Capella | RY4 Double | 6%
actually, any of the INW shisha flavours make a pretty solid solo mix, since they're meant for DIY hooka stuff.
you can buy a kit from The Broke Vaper, which gives you most of what you need to make a full liter of juice. I recommend buying a decent kitchen scale and mixing by weight, though.
you can also read up on /r/DIY_eJuice
I went down this path. The boiler is fully exposed, so if you have a kid or a compact counter, bumping the thing will burn someone. They also need a solid grinder and a process developed by you to make a consistent cup. You need a Scale like this one to weigh your grounds. My wife and I can taste a .5g difference in dose, as insane as this sounds. They claim 16 cups, but they aren't temperature stable enough to do that until you've got years of experience and a lot of patience.
By "process" I mean the following. Determining the number of grams to dose. Getting the grind to emit the shot in a specified number of seconds, the feel of the pull on the lever to exert the right amount of extraction pressure, how to warm up the machine to the right temp and keep it operating in the correct range, and cleaning it as well as when to clean it.
The LP machine is not a good fit for the person who just wants to hit a button and get their drink. If you're a coffee geek who loves science and process, this is an entry level machine that can do amazing shots from time to time. I learned a lot from my LP - it showed me what is possible.
I have one similar to this one, measures to .01 and mine is still going strong two years later. Edit: I have one similar, my brand was smart weigh, looks like Amazon isn't currently selling it.
I've seen recommendations for this one from people I trust.
I was looking around the FAQ and came up with this setup as something super cheap to get me started, can I get your thoughts on it?

Large blender will fit 3 meals.
This one looks pretty good. Two decimal points for $20

Otherwise really just look through the related ones here on amazon, your local headie shop will have scales but they like to jack the prices up.
So here we go, first reddit post, please be gentle ;)
Getting off the fags with vaping, recently upgraded some crappy ecig to a nautilus mini and itaste mvp with some Hangsen juices, wow what a difference! Now have a kayfun 4 clone on order and cant resist the temptation to try and mix my own juice.
Planning my first diy purchase to get into mixing and would welcome some feedback.

There you go, what has the nOOb missed? :)
EDIT Updated bottles and flavours thanks to coop34's comments
Definitely buy a weighing scales. I have infinite supplies of syringes but only made that mistake the first time. Now I only use syringes to safely draw up nicotine and drop into bottle but still measure it by weight. You won't regret it and the cost is minimal.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ME8VI34/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is the one I bought for €12 and it's a little dinger. The main thing is buy one that measures 0.000 ie 3 decimal places
This seems to be the most popular scale http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005UGBG20/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but its gone up in recent days from ~34 bucks to 44.
I was looking at this one personally http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ME8VI34/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It has a 2 minute auto shutoff which is the only thing that worries me, but would it take 2 minutes to add one ingredient? :P
This is the last one I was considering, but this one is into cheap-ass territory http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QFCG5ZQ?psc=1

You can find other, cheaper scales (remeber they must read down to 0.01g) but this is the one I've been using for over a year that hasn't let me down.
I will make it ELI5 like.
-Safety: Always wear eye protection, ALWAYS. And Gloves.
-Don't use silicon(molds) and resin(casted objects) from different suppliers as they are not optimized for each other. The moment you understand the chemistry behind it fully you can mix suppliers. But this needs serious research.
-- if you add color, the color pigments can contain chemicals that will prevent the resin or silicon from hardening... it is chemistry in the end...
-Don't buy cheap stuff without datasheets so you don't know what went wrong (wrong humidity - to high... wont harden - to cold or wrong mixture...) and a data sheet can tell you what to expect.
--always use grams as your unit not volume, this way you can also use containers in different forms to mix stuff
they sell the right epoxy and silicon so you don't have to worry and everything comes with datasheets...
-always test, stuff may react with each other and wont harden as it is chemistry, don't know whether I mentioned that before...
-resin for casting is different from resin for composite materials (like glassfiber or carbon fiber)
source: professional with 8 years prototyping experience worked with with different suppliers - sika and smooth on know what they are doing...
Seriously, invest in a scale. I bought this one and haven't regretted it one bit. No need to bother with syringes or anything of the sort (It's good to keep some pipettes handy in the case you buy a difficult container to handle), just drip them on the scale and you're set. Plus, it can be used for other things. I mean, syringes can be too, but let's try not to go down that road.
He ya go! I live in Canada btw so I dont know if it will be deliverable to you if you live elsewhere.
Any other questions? I'm happy to share!
I use this and it works really well.
Smart Weigh Digital Pro Pocket Scale with Back-Lit LCD Display, Tare, Hold and PCS Features 500 x 0.01g (2 Lids Included) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00ME8VI34/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_UjrAxbE8MCMPN
£15 and if you have prime it will be there tomorrow. I started diy 3 weeks ago and this has been working fine for me. 2 min auto shut off, but NOTHING takes 2 min to measure out (and you reset it after every ingredient, so reset the timer).
Startup cost can be one of them:
1L VG: $13
1L PG (this will list awhile): $13
120ml 100mg Nic in PG (I use VapersTek/Heartland (seperated into 4 unicorn bottles and put 3 in freeze for long term storage): $15
30ml Unicorn bottles (pack of 100 (lasted me ~8 months but YMMV)): $30
Scale: ~$30
Alternative Scale: $14
Pipettes (pack of 100): $7
Flavorings can be gotten from ($2-$7 per 15 or 30ml):
heartlandvapes
BullCityFlavor
GremlinDIY
EcigExpress
so say 10 flavors (5 15ml (~$2.50) and 5 30ml (~$5) : ~$37.50
Grand total: ~$145.50 but YMMV (could start with less VG, PG, bottles, nic, flavorings).
Expect your flavor collection to grow quickly. (mine is in the 60s or so)
