Controlling the temperature of the iron is very important. Some soldering irons have a built-in dial that lets you control it. I have an iron without that, so I also have a rheostat that lets me adjust the temperature. I usually have it set around 6, but YMMV, and it will change based on the type of solder you're using.

Usually hotter is easier, but you have to be careful of it being too hot, because then the solder may completely melt and slip through to the other side and form a blob on the backside. I've also heard the glass will break if it gets too hot, but haven't had that happen to me (yet).
