Just in case anyone was curious about the 2001: A Space Odyssey book Rob mentioned, I'm 99.99% sure this should be it. Looking forward to checking it out as it's the first I've heard of it:

This doesn't sound right, since Kubrick started 2001 in 1964.

However, I did hear another Kubrick/Beatles related anecdote in the excellent book Space Odyssey, which I just finished. Towards the end of production, Kubrick was talking to special effects man Colin Cantwell, and he was frustrated at not being able to get an original musical score to his liking (he had just fired Alex North). Cantwell recalls that Kubrick, at the end of his rope, said "Should I contact The Beatles?".

Cantwell reckons that he wasn't serious and was just saying it out of desperation. In any event, nothing was ever done about it.
