  1. Sawdust toilet - great for when your plumbing is under repair, or for camping trips.

  2. Compost the sawdust with heavy nitrogen and/or lots of fertilizer. Where do you get the nitrogen? Use a chemical stump remover made of potassium nitrate. (Careful, it will get HOT in the center. Use good composting practices to prevent fires.)

  3. Combine the two.

  4. Mix it with wax or paraffin to create fire starter bricks for camping or barbecue or fireplace.

  5. Clean up oil spills on your driveway or garage.

  6. Rub your hands in it when your hands are greasy or covered with glue. Scrub your hands to (mostly) clean them with the sawdust.

  7. Fine sawdust ("wood flour") is a great wood filler when mixed with glue. It even matches the color of the wood you're working on.

  8. Used in pottery kilns for certain glazes.

  9. Give it away online for free. Or sell it if you can.

Dig about an inch below the surface and cut it off flush with a sawzall and a pruning blade. Use a spade bit in a drill to make holes in the stump and fill it with potassium nitrate. Its not fast but a hell of a lot easier than digging

If you are willing to wait for biological action (rotting) to occur, there are several formulations on the market that will do the job. If you have the time, it should do the job for you:

Potassium Nitrate is the primary ingredient in almost all stump removing powders. Here is is on Amazon for less that $6.

If you can't get Potassium Nitrate, Sodium Nitrate will probably work as well but may burn too hot and/or explosively with the sugar (a new ratio should be worked out).

You can either have it ground out with a stump grinder, dig it out, or drill holes in it and use a stump remover.

My buddy used this stuff and said it worked great. Unfortunately he only told me about it after I was telling him how much of a bitch it was to remove the stump, so I never got a chance to use it. I know about as much about it as you do.

Spectracide Stump Remover is 100% potassium nitrate (source).

I've bought some at Lowes.

It's also carried by Home Depot and Amazon.
