Step 1: Buy tall Tees
Step 2: Buy this
Step 3: Watch this
Step 4: Custom shirts in whatever size you want!
Here's what you do:
It's a lot of work and patience, but you'll be able to make infinite shirts using this method. There's also the photo emulsion method, which will preserve more details, but that will take longer.
EDIT: Oh, what the hell. Here's the photo emulsion method:
It is fun! I'm new to this sub too, just started doing this a few weeks ago so I'm learning a lot as I go.
I started off buying this kit and reading the instructions. It was clear I'd have to buy stuff to make an exposure unit separately, but I did it as cheaply as possible. One bulb from here, one light fitting from here, one home-made reflector made of carboard and foil, hung the light 12" above my desk using my existing desk lamp to hold it up. It's not tidy but it works! Looks like this.
The instruction book in the speedball kit gave a lot of helpful advice. But really it's trial and error.
My biggest errors so far:
Sorry for the wall of text.. There's tons of helpful vids online but most of those people have pro set ups with carousels. I'm doing it very cheaply!
Give me a shout if you buy the kit and get into it!
Does she already have a screenprinting set? With the cricut, you can do vinyl cutouts fairly easy, but the paint and the setup is separate. There are varying prices - depends on the breadth of the kit. Plus, you could get some blank shirts for her to start with or one of those lamps.
Screenprinting Kit
Pick up a screen printing kit and a bunch of fabric.

Known a lot of folks who have started out with The Speedball Kit. It's a solid introduction to the methodology and core concepts of the process for shirts.
If you are more into paper printing, it's the same basic process but you want to use water based acrylic paint/ink instead of the "fabric" ink.

There's a lot of hatred here. Really unnecessary. Everyone's gotta start somewhere. I don't think you need a Kickstarter, but you can get very very basic capabilities for very cheap.
My suggestion is to get a diazo emulsion starter kit so you can learn the basic processes. Here's a fine one. It's 60 bucks. Add some white for like another 10, since that's what your design is.

You will also need transparencies (either laser or ink jet, depending on what printer you have access to).
Lastly, you can get a couple test shirts at a craft store for a couple bucks each. Michaels sells them for maybe 3 or 4 bucks.
This will let you make a few shirts, see if this whole thing is for you, give you a few items to demo and sell, and let you know what parts of the process you want to invest in commercial equipment for.
Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions!
You can do this on a much smaller scale by getting a kit like this.
It's not exactly the same, but it should be enough to get you started.
