Why do people have to imply that studying spider webs will one day lead to greater understanding of human aging. That seems like a pretty silly and roundabout way to come at things no?
This is science, for it's own sake: no applications necessary. There are human beings who get grants to just look at spider webs all day. That enriches us: inspires other to seek a deep understanding of the world. Like art it should be recognized as something which enriches us for it's own sake.
Some people write entire books abouts spider webs. That they are allowed to do so on my dime is a truly wondrous thing and a reason why I am glad that pure market application isn't the last word in science funding.
To misrepresent pure science as research and development cheapens it: like saying the Mona Lisa will someday improve our ability to create kickass wallpaper.
