When I was a little kid I had these massive Sports illustrated books about Baseball, Basketball, and Football, that went through the sport decade by decade, talking about the players and culture. coffee table books are mainly for guests, to browse while you're doing something or as a conversation starter. I'd lean for something that has a lot of pictures in it & is easy to digest.

You probably don't want an actual cookbook for a coffee table book. If there's a specific style you're interested in, then there's a lot out there with really nice photography (seems to be the new thing in cook books).
