I'm sure you've done some research and heard about how fragile they are as puppies. This is 100% true, my little girl broke her foot the second day we had her (just by running into something).

Potty training is the most difficult part about owning an IG. Be prepared for many accidents in the house (if you have carpet I recommend getting a spot bot. They hate being cold. If you live in a climate where it gets pretty cold in the winter it might be easier to litter box or potty pad train him. No matter what, don't get discouraged about potty training, this is the number one reason IG's end up in shelters.

They make great companions and want nothing more than to cuddle up with you under the blankets. They are very loyal to their owners and can be skittish around strangers. The more you can socialize him the better. They are very smart and highly trainable, it might take a little extra persistence but don't give up.

A lot of pets will just push the foil off the couch. You're probably better off just putting a blanket on the couch at night. My family also found the Bissell SpotBot's to be really helpful for cleaning the couch fabric from smells. It's also really good for accidents in the house.

My dog's favorite vomit time is first thing in the morning, so just being able to do a quick wipe with some paper towels, slap the weird carpet device down on the offending spot, press "go", and resume getting ready for work is kind of a lifesaver. It also saved the day when I spilled an entire bright red soda on our brand new light gray couch.

I bought the pet spot cleaner and its worked really well for me. Basically a carpet cleaner that just runs over a small circle.

If you can afford it, I highly recommend cat towers, with places for them to hide/sleep/scratch on a post.

Get a litter box for every floor of your living area. If you have mostly carpeted areas, I highly recommend putting down plastic mats with the spikes on one side (you can buy them in bulk at Home Depot or similar stores), and getting enough so that you avoid getting kitty litter (or kitty accidents) on the carpets.

Have wet food for her at least once a day (a spoonful is enough), and avoid getting patte styles. Cats eat based on texture most of the time, so the chunkier (and meatier) the better. There are dry foods that are specifically limited in carbs (or carb free), which are good for cats since they need a lot of protein.

Leave paper bags and boxes on the floor for her. Cats live places to hide or seek out adventure in.

Cat claw trimmers, because those little daggers on her front paws will get sharp and she will probably knead on you/near you. Nail clippers will suffice if they are sharp enough, but be careful when trimming! There's an area in her claw that actually has blood (called the quik(sp?)) that has a terrible time clotting on it's own and it hurts them, so don't cut it.

If you start early enough, you can clicker train your cat. This can provide mental stimulation and increase time you spend together!

I have a neutered male Whippet that had these issues. It just takes patients. Never yell or scorn the dog for doing it as it reenforces the behavior. You need to really watch and see what sets him off. For mine, it was for him to be in a situation he was unsure or unfamiliar of. Mine always had signs like tucking his tail or turning his head side ways. That is our queue to back off what we are doing. It is also important to break eye contact once you start seeing those signs. It is also important to establish a regular schedule for going outside to take care of business. If you know new people are coming over, or something out of the norm is going to happen, be sure to take him out first.

If you make an effort to do this, he will gain confidence and the issue will become less and less of an issue. It took roughly a year or so for mine, but now it is rarely a problem. In the mean time get a SpotBot and some BacOut. These will make cleanup for accidents much more simple, and the bacout works wonders removing spots and odors from urination (I have cats too, I buy this stuff by the gallon!). Good luck and don't give up on him!

Do you have something like a spotbot to help with the upkeep? I got a spotbot pet and how it works is you set it down and it automatically shampoos an 8" circle of carpet. So you push the button then just walk away while it works. Then move it to a new spot. I let mine run while I cook dinner- it beeps when it's time to move it to a new spot.

The best part is that I don't have to buy replacement cleaning solution off the internet- they sell it at my local Meijer, which is super convenient.

The review on Amazon that sold me on it showed pictures of a cone of explosive diarrhea from a dog that wound up on beige carpet and it cleaned it. A redditor on /r/Parenting used it to clean up when her child colored with highlighter all over her light carpeting and I used it when I had an elderly rabbit who couldn't always make it to the litterbox in time.

Amazon will be having all sorts of flash deals on Thanksgiving weekend and the following week. I love shopping for cleaning type appliances on cyber Monday. Most people are so busy looking for TVs and video games that they overlook the kind of presents that could make mom's life easier.

:-/ Your best bet is probably a Little Green Machine or a Spot Bot. They're about a hundred bucks, but they like magic and last forever! Sorry you pooped on your carpet.

Not sure of the fiber content of the rug, it's not particularly valuable (just a 5x7 rug from bed bad & beyond).

Sorry about the bad picture, but basically the fibers appear to be distressed to the point that they won't align with their original pattern.

Okay, so this is a little pricey, but....Nature's Miracle in a Spotbot.

A Spotbot is like if a carpet cleaner fucked a Roomba. You set it down on the mess and press a button and it scrubs a little circle that will look suspiciously cleaner than the rest of your carpet. And it has a handheld attachment if the clean ring/rest of the carpet disparity is bad enough for you to decide to get down on your hands and knees and start scrubbing.

The Spotbot pamphlet will say that you must only use Spotbot brand liquid cleaner. It is lying to you. Pour Nature's Miracle into it and set it free to do its blessed work.

Nature's Miracle and paper towels work extremely well on their own, especially if you are diligent about potty training (our dog has probably had only about 5 accidents in his entire life. He's currently 21 months old).

That being said, we were gifted a Spotbot and it is something nice to have (but again, not necessary), especially for bigger messes and already set in stains (we use it far more for cat puke than for dog accidents). It's just so easy since all you have to do is fill the water/cleaning solution tank, throw it on the mess, and press a button.
