It's only $240 with prime shipping. It may be easier to find someone to loan you that amount than $500. Good luck!
I live in the FL panhandle. My garage isn't insulated, but this unit does a pretty good job for beating the heat. It hasn't seen > 90 degrees yet, but it does a good job of dehumidifying and cooling so far (it's been 85 at least). Dang, it was also $50 cheaper when I bought it... I guess the season is probably driving the price up.
I've had this one since 2015 and used it every summer since. I've never tried cooling the entire apartment but it keeps a bedroom ice cold. My only issue with it is that it's a single hose so it creates a vacuum in the room you use it in which isn't as efficient. I'll definitely look into a dual hose model when this one dies.
Don't rent, just buy one like this. You will use it more than just one summer. I've had this one for two years now and it's been fine. I only use it to cool the bedroom at night but it would probably also cool a small studio. It also doesn't hang out the window so I don't think your landlord would care.
Portable air conditioners that exhaust outside work well, much better than a swamp cooler.
I bought one of these for my office in an un-air-conditioned house (I work from home) and even with computers running generating heat it will freeze me out.
The biggest thing if you get a portable is to get one that puts some of the removed moisture in the exhaust...otherwise you'll have a water tank you're constantly emptying.
My fiancé used a portable unit similar to the link below to cool a large outdoor shed, he used as a bedroom. The hose ran out a small dog door, so your window size is no issue. It was loud but very effective in the north Texas heat. Also, since it was portable it went into storage in the winter, freeing up floor space.
