Great book featuring saguaros and a pet rat, Star Girl by Jerry Spinelli (maniac Magee is also fantastic!).

I'm gonna go ahead and use the same book for both your daughter, and my future child(ren). My girlfriend and I (7+ years) plan on having a child once I finish college (couple months to a year, then). We both read Love, Stargirl (which is the sequel to the above) and enjoyed the heck out of it. For a children's book, I found a lot of subtle parts and hints that I felt as an adult, I noticed. I'd love to meet Jerry Spinelli one day and ask him these questions (At the time I couldn't find others thinking the same thing through Google).
Stargirl is the first book, and having read the second first it really put a weird spin on reading the first after knowing what happens. They're both great books and Spinelli's a great writer that can appeal to children and adults at the same time.
