Yes you need an active converter. They are both digital signals but they send data in different ways. HDMI is TMDS and DP uses a micro-packet structure.

Also, the direction matters as well. A DP->HDMI converter will not work backwards for HDMI->DP.

Something like this. No idea if that Startech one is good or not, just the first I found.

Yes but since your laptop only has a HDMI out it can get expensive I believe.

But I believe it's not as simple as getting a Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI cable, look for confirmation elsewhere but according to Wacom's website & other sources I have found.

You'll want a DisplayPort to HDMI converter...

You'll also need a Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable...

That would be everything you need to get up an running. But your laptop only having a HDMI out up's the cost you'd need to spend sadly.

Full disclosure, I have a Wacom Cintiq 13 Pro myself, but I have a Macbook Pro with USB-C connectors, an a PC full of DisplayPort out's so it's much easier for me to get it connected.

The adapter you linked converts DP to DVI, it doesn't list anywhere that it can work the other way around. Adapters that can convert DVI or HDMI to DP are commonly much more expensive.

As far as I know no one makes a device that converts to DisplayPort. I could be wrong but my guess would be you won't get that working. HDMI to DVI is a direct conversion requiring no electronics so it will be cheapest. However all this depends on the monitor being able to display resolutions expected by the PS3.

I don't know what your PC will output but it would likely be best to change it to Display Port if possible.

EDIT: Welp I was wrong... Apparently some sellers on Amazon do have such a thing. http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-HDMI2DP-DisplayPort-Active-Converter/dp/B004I6IYSM/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1417559257&sr=8-13&keywords=hdmi+to+displayport Real issue with that is I have no idea how well it would work with HDCP. You really need something that works with HDCP with the PS3 unfortunately.

Nooo! If you read the name of the product carefully, it is for a displayport source to hdmi monitor. You would actually need something like this

but I cant even recommend that... just look at the reviews lol. sorry :/

It works

Used this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I6IYSM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Didn't test out 4k since I don't have a PS4 pro.

No sound comes thru the MSP, there might by a way around this but I use headphone anyway

Edit:

Sound does come thru the MSP, my ps4 audio setting were set for the wrong output

ok thanks, I do have 2 full size displayports on the back, I'll give the DP>HDMI a try.

So basically something like this is no good for me:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001S2PYQY/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details

and I would need this for hdmi, which for 80 bucks is a total rip off:

???

Also, any idea why my onboard graphics card is causing apps to crash on startup?

The things you link to won't work. They work in the other direction. (They aren't bidirectional because Displayport+ is a superset of HDMI, but HDMI isn't a superset of Displayport. Basically, most Displayport outputs are also HDMI ports, just with a different connector.) You need an active converter, but I haven't seen any that do 4k.

Here's one that won't drive the Cintiq Pro 16 at full resolution and has bad reviews: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-HDMI2DP-DisplayPort-Active-Converter/dp/B004I6IYSM

You will do better with the Cintiq Pro 13, which is just 1920x1080.

Yes, using HDMI to HDMI, works great on a TV.

Edit: any reason I would need an active converter?

u/ghostwriter77 · 1 pointr/WiiUHacks

That's what I thought too, but then I read this:

"Not without an HDMI->DisplayPort adapter (which aren't cheap) - e.g. http://www.amazon.com/Startech-com-HDMI-DisplayPort-Active-Converter/dp/B004I6IYSM/ (Note I have no idea if that adaptor will work with the Wii U and your monitor - it's just illustrative of the sort of thing you'd have to get)
Don't be confused, and buy a DisplayPort->HDMI Adaptor (which are cheap, but are intended for connecting a DisplayPort equipped PC to a HDMI monitor, and won't work the other way round)"

As for audio, I'm using separate speakers with RCA inputs.

u/gzunk · 1 pointr/buildapc

That adapter won't work. It's from DisplayPort to HDMI, not HDMI to DisplayPort.

You need this one. Not sure if you'll find it locally.

u/d43ms · 1 pointr/electronics

Right, sorry.. With a Pi, your only option would be to buy an ACTIVE HDMI > DP adapter. Something like this

u/CosmonautLaika · 1 pointr/Monitors

If you are using the video card as your active display, you need to plug the monitor into the video card (not the motherboard). The motherboard output for is if you are using the integrated graphics on your processor/mobo. But as you say you don't have displayport on your graphics card.

If you have integrated graphics, turn them on in the BIOS (using a different monitor, I guess, so you can see what you are doing) then you may be able to run it off that.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like you can run it off your current video card unless you get a DVI/HDMI to Displayport converter (cheapest I saw was $50 http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-HDMI2DP-DisplayPort-Active-Converter/dp/B004I6IYSM), or purchase a cheaper card with displayport to use a stop-gap until the 1070 releases (something like a GTX 750, for example) then sell it after.

Or you could do something like the EVGA Step-Up program. They let you return a card you purchased within 90 days towards the price of a newly released card. It remains to be seen if they will add the GTX 1070 to their list, but they probably will (did so with the 1080) http://www.evga.com/support/stepup/
