Unless your computer supports hybrid graphics, you can't have one monitor sticking in the graphics card and one sticking to your motherboard. You need both cables sticking out of the graphics card like your white cord.

You need to get a DVI to VGA adapter like this one: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-Female-Connector-Black-DVIVGAMFBK/dp/B004G3WCLM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1452001167&sr=8-3&keywords=dvi+to+vga+adapter

Costs around $2 on eBay if you look around.

This way you can plug DVI side into your graphics card, and plug VGA cable leading to your monitor.

ALSO: Turn your phone sideways before you record. Vertical videos are my pet peeve.

edit: DVI side of the adapter needs to be female, VGA side needs to be male, like the one I linked above.

edit2: I assume the other port on your graphics card is a DVI because it looks like it, correct me if I am wrong.

i don't think you get it

the adapter in op's image is for DVI-D which is DIGITAL only, therefor the adapter in op's image literally would not work, as you can't passivley convert digital to analouge, you need an active adapter, which are bigger

here's an example of an active adapter:

http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Active-Female-Adapter/dp/B012DLMS1W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1453499993&sr=8-2&keywords=dvi-d+to+vga+active

if this was what op had, it would work great

if you want to use a passive adapter for dvi to vga, you'd need your dvi port to be dvi-i, at which point you'd need a dvi-i to vga adapter (which still isn't what op has, the adapter op has literally would never work ever)

here's an example of a passive dvi-i to vga adapter:

If there is a thrift store near you, you might be able to find a 1024x768 monitor for pretty cheap ($5-$10). If your brother's graphics card has only DVI connections you would just need to make sure that you have a DVI-I to VGA adapter and a VGA cable, just make sure the graphics card has a DVI-I connector notice the plus shape on the right with the holes in each inward corner.

Just an idea.

This would do nicely.

Yes i am doing but for now it will have to do, thanks for the help

Edit: Does this one look ok? It has the right mount of pins on both ends.

or maybe this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004G3WCLM

The only thing you need is a dvi to vga adapter

Apologies I am getting confused between the two.

So yes initially I had DVI-I which works fine.

what I bought is similar to this http://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-DVI-VGA-Cable-Adapter/dp/B004G3WCLM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458233268&sr=8-1&keywords=dvi+d+to+vga -> will this not work?

You could just use an adapter

u/sigmatac · 1 pointr/buildapc

this is a simple fix.

use you dvi-d to vga adapter that should have came with your GPU and then purchase a hdmi to dvi adapter like this and a hdmi cable like this

u/watusa · 1 pointr/pchelp

Yes, this will work in your specific port (DVI-I). You can ship it from Canada here.

Adapter is your best bet.
