My go to brand is Steelseries.

I think Logitech has the gimmick but falls short on the execution. Works great for their marketing but when you get down to brass tacks, Logitech since 2003-2004 has become somewhat of a joke. The MX510 and the MX518 were great mouses but they've fell to the wayside with the innovation of brands like Razer, Steelseries and Zowie.

A lot of people like Razer. To me it feels like cheap plastic. I can certainly see the appeal because their software is pretty awesome but I prefer Steelseries because not only is software optional but the mouse works just as well without it.

Zowie is a new up and coming brand. It has a sponsorship deal with one of the greatest Counter-Strike teams in the world, Ninjas in Pajamas. Its a cool idea because Zowie has allowed legends like Heaton and Spawn to help design products catering specifically to the needs of competitive gamers. I have to give them credit for remaking the Microsoft Explorer 3.0, which is my favorite mouse of all time and I have to give them even more credit for the EC2. The EC2 is essentially the successor to the 3.0. I own one and its fantastic.

Back to Steelseries which is my brand of choice. I think these guys are the best when it comes to anything.

This is going to sound like a commercial but Ill give you the run down on why I like each piece of their line. They are SOLID. In the 6-7 years I've been using their products, I've never broken a single piece of equipment and I treat my stuff pretty bad.

The Kinzu and the Xai are fantastic mice for FPS players. They both pole to 1000 hz stock, the Xai has an LCD screen on the bottom that allows you to store config files if you're a dude who travels a lot and goes to a lot of LANs. They both also feature a braided cable. This means the cable is thicker than usual and it can really take a beating. There is one major flaw with the Kinzu and Xai and it is that it has built in mouse acceleration. According to Steelseries its supposed to help gamers and its supposed to act as a sort of buffer but as a competitive gamer, my personal philosophy is that mouse acceleration is always a bad thing which is why I opt to use the Zowie EC2 instead. If I had to choose between the Kinzu and Xai I would choose the Kinzu but thats mostly because I'm not a fan of the gimmicks of an LCD screen and side buttons. I should also mention Steelseries has another mouse called the Ikari. It doesn't have mouse acceleration but I don't believe its catered to FPS players. I think its more of an RTS/MMO mouse but I would imagine most Logitech fans would find the Ikari to be gold. Its just that kind of gimmicky mouse.

As for headsets, I have to recommend the Icemat Siberas V2. Again, it has a braided cable that wont tear. Most importantly, the design of the headset is meant to feel like you aren't wearing a headset at all and it executes on that so well. The headset is huge but its very light. It gives you really good directional sound but it feels like you're wearing nothing at all...nothing at all...NOTHING AT ALL!(Sorry, I can't help but make that Simpsons reference)

The keyboards, despite its price is probably the best bang for your buck. I own the Steelseries 6GV2 and its literally the last keyboard I will ever buy. Its so comfortable to type on that I've thought about packing it up and taking it with me to work. Its a mechanical keyboard that acts as a two port USB and headset hub. It also has the best build quality of any keyboard I've ever seen. Seriously, I've seen people do some horrendous things to this keyboard and it keeps on ticking. I remember one of the promo videos was a dude throwing it out a window, spilling a drink on it, swinging it around like a flail, the thing simply doesn't break. If you don't type on a mechanical keyboard, I can't recommend it enough. The tactile feedback is so nice and responsive that the squishy membrane keyboards have become unusable to me. The wrist rest is also really nice. If you spend a lot of time at a keyboard, and I'm talking about not only gaming but work and school then I think you should really consider this guy because it types like a dream. Also, mechanical keyboards last a really long time. The Steelseries 6GV2 is probably the last keyboard I will ever buy, assuming it never breaks on me or we find a way to utilize USB 3.0 in a way that is actually useful for keyboards.

Pricing isn't as bad as some would have you believe. Its certainly no worse than the most expensive Logitech/Microsoft products.

The Kinzu is $35

The Ikari is $80

The Icemat Siberia V2 are $75(Keep in mind this is a headset, not just headphones. It has a retractable microphone. The only problem I have with this headset is that it looks kind of dorky)

The 6GV2 is $115(I know, pretty damn expensive, but it really is in my opinion, the best keyboard on the market and is totally worth the price, especially if you're a guy who switches keyboards ever 2-3 years because this thing isn't going anywhere.)

I have a Steelseries 6GV2 and I absolutely love it. Works great for SC2, HoN, WoW, and pretty much any game I've played on it. Took me a few days to get used to, but I definitely enjoy the feel of it over the traditional keyboard.

Steelseries 6gv2

Very simple but extremely good quality mechanical keyboard, and not too expensive. It's definitely not designed for MMO's (imo, its not even specifically for gaming, even though they call it "gaming keyboard"), but that doesn't mean it's bad, I can really do everything fine. The only downside is that it doesn't have macro keys, which is not a problem for me personally because i have never used them on my old Logitech keyboard anyways.

u/trustifarian · 5 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Scour ebay. This Steelseries board is discontinued and I think one of the last big-ass enter keyboards made.

u/niktavalos · 5 pointsr/starcraft

The cost is justified by the expensive mechanical switches in the style of IBM's old Model M. Using mechanical switches instead of rubber domes gives a completely different tactile response, for which keyboard fanatics are willing to pay a premium. The more reasonably priced mechanical keyboards start at around $100.

u/bigcity_ · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Just a quick look and I found 3 keyboards on Amazon.

  1. Steel Series 6GV2
  2. Corsair K90
  3. CoolMaster CM Storm XT

Some of them are slightly over $100 CDN. I personally use a Das keyboard with blue switches but they go for about 130 CDN but its definitely worth thinking about!

For which switch to get, you can watch youtube videos for sound to get a general idea. As for the feel of the switch, your preference will come down to what you like. You can usually find people who love a particular switch because it works for them so try to research as best you can just remember no switch color is the 'best'. You can go here and look at them in the chart or click on an individual one to research a little. The cN number is the spring pressure of the switch, so the lower the number the lighter the key press will be.

    Hope this helps a little!

http://www.amazon.ca/SteelSeries-6GV2-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B0038X3ZVM is pretty unassuming as well. There's red and black switches available

u/CaptSkunk · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Yes and no. I guess it would depend on how far you let yourself sink into the pit that mechanical keyboards can be. Some people go crazy and make custom key cap designs that look trendy and cool. Others just get a plain Jane looking keyboard.

I myself, have a Steelseries 6Gv2 and it is about as plain as it gets but it is still well-built and typing feels better on it. Typing just feels smoother with it, than if I were using a rubber-dome keyboard.

One thing that a lot of people like about mechanical keyboards is the tactile feedback that you get with some of the switch types. Some of them, such as Cherry MX Blue or Green, have a sort of a bump, that lets you feel when you've actuated the key. Some other switches do not have this bump and also make very little noise, such as Cherry Red or Black switches.

Lastly, a mechanical keyboard is something that will last you a very long time. Just look at how easy it is to find an IBM Model M on eBay or in pawn shops. Most of those were made in the 80's and still function like new.

It's more of a personal preference thing though. Yes, mechs are expensive but I feel it is worth it. You've got a keyboard that feels great to type on and will last forever.

u/Viperavirus · 2 pointsr/GlobalOffensive

I believe the default is Black with Red as an option, specifies Cherry MX Black / Red on their website <https://steelseries.com/gaming-keyboards>. I was browsing Amazon back when I was building my PC because I knew I wanted try Reds from my research and saw "6Gv2 Mechanical Red Cherry Switches" <http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0038X3ZVM/ref=twister_B008RWR5JC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1> and heard good things about the keyboard (plus I'm a bit of a SteelSeries fanboy) so I picked it up during one of the amazon sales for ~$70.

Whenever this keyboard inevitably dies, I may try a set of Browns next, but I'm personally a huge fan of Reds.

144hz isnt noticeable until you run the game at 144+ frames per second, so if you cant sit around that FPS, buying a fancy 144hz monitor might be a waste. However i have had this monitor for about a year and a half now and it works great, and like i said, if you can hit that 144 fps constant, you will see a difference in your aim. As for keyboards, really any will do, i have this one, and its lasted me a good 5 years and running. But when it comes to improving your movement, it will definitely make your key presses sharper, and will undoubtedly be an upgrade from lets say a wireless keyboard, but i dont know if it provides as big of an advantage as a 144hz monitor does compared to a 60hz monitor.

Isn't the point of minimalism to have few design options?

I kid, but those minimalist options are out there but they aren't heavily marketed.

Cases:
Lian Li
Fractal

Keyboards:
Logitech (Turn the RGB off)
Steelseries

Mice
Zowie (CSGO pros love this mouse)
Logitech

You just have to look around. I normally find out what pros use, they generally get the most basic gear possible to avoid any complications or distractions.

I mean, the fact that a keyboard has a Bigass Enter means it has a strange layout, because nobody really uses those, and they're very hard to stabilise.

The only boards I know of with a BAE are some of the Steelseries boards like the 6gv2 or 7G.

u/kschang · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Do you mean ISO enter (upside down L) or a BIG Ass Enter (large L)?

The only keyboard on the market readily available with Big Ass Enter is the Steel Series 6GV2

u/HelloMcFly · 1 pointr/GameDeals

I couldn't find anything close to the after-discount price for their 6gv2 on competing websites. That's around $100 on eBay, and the lowest I found for it elsewhere (new, anyway) was around $91 from the Amazon community.

If you're wanting a mechanical keyboard with cherry black switches, I think this is your best value. I thought r/gamedeals would love this! But, it does not appear to be the case.

u/staindk · 1 pointr/macgaming

I've been itching to get a Steelseries mechanical keyboard for my mac - seems like it would suit the relatively simplistic look, and honestly they make the best (affordable) mechanical keyboard at the moment, as far as I can tell.

What I'm looking at getting: http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-6Gv2-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B0038X3ZVM

Also considering the 'stealth' or whatever the blank one is called - mechanical keyboard with blank key uppers, all keys printed on the front side. Looks cool.

u/smoogums · 1 pointr/buildapc

I see you like mechanical keyboards. I'm not really a fan of Razer products and am a steel series man myself. If your looking for a solid, cheaper, clean looking keyboard might I suggest http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-6Gv2-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B0038X3ZVM

Keycaps are from a steelseries 6gv2

Looks like the board is actually just a steelseries 6gv2 painted purple

6gv2 is $99

I use the 6gv2.. Amazing keyboard, but I need some Cherry Blues because I'm going back to college and will be typing a lot. Meh, who knows. But ya, $99 everywhere it seems.

u/kagayaki · 1 pointr/gaming

About gaming accessories, it really depends on what your budget is.
You can get a decent mouse for $30-50, but the "good" ones are probably closer to $100.

I don't have any specific recommendations for mice since I'm using an MMO mouse when I play Starcraft2, but it works pretty well for it. I wouldn't especially recommend it for playing SC2 though since it's relatively bulky and has A LOT of buttons that are kind of useless for SC2 out of the box. The Razer Deathadder is probably a better solution specifically and not all that expensive, although if money weren't an object I wouldn't mind having a Steelseries Xai Laser Mouse either. ;p

Keyboards, I'm using Steelseries' G6v2 (amazon link here) and have been quite satisfied with it so far. I hear a lot of people say good things about Filco keyboards and recommend them over the one I end up buying, but I don't know what specific model people are thinking of. Doing a search for Filco leads me to believe you'll be paying closer to $150 for one of their keyboards though.

Ultimately, have you asked this gamer what they may want? ;p

u/ajmmin · 1 pointr/gaming

Once I get a little bit of cash together for this project, I am going to buy a SteelSeries 6Gv2, possibly replace the Cherry blacks with browns, and do something similar to this to it.

I already have most of the typewriter keys I need. :P

Edit: Check out this Model M Ergo that Datamancer modded

Quite frankly, you won't find anything with all you want. F-Keys are nearly always segregated. And the smaller boards where they are closer have no #pad.

SS 6gv2 have pretty close function keys...

Filco Majestouch Have good keycaps, but no #pad.

All Leopold Boards Have awesome keycaps, but again, have a small space and no #pad.

DasKeyboard Are amazing, have really great keycaps, small distance to F-keys, and have the #pad.

u/Vague21 · 1 pointr/starcraft

You can buy one here: http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-6Gv2-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B0038X3ZVM/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1312920159&sr=1-1

I payed an extra $20 and got it in two days. For what is worth, I really like this keyboard, but it is the only mechanical keyboard I know...

u/Karkat · 1 pointr/starcraft

Why is that keyboard $50 more than it should be.

Here is the other one

u/RextonETS · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'm trying to find a keyboard around the $100 range but $130-170 is too much for me and I prefer the whole keyboard layout (number pad and arrow keys). Are these keyboards any good? Cooler Master
Storm Quick Fire Pro
, SteelSeries 6Gv2, Rosewill RK-9000

u/asrenos · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-6Gv2-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B0038X3ZVM is cheap and reasonnably solid. The only problem is the weird ass enter key, but if you're not going to change the keycaps it's not a problem.
