Yeah, I use a fully programmable gaming keypad (these are out of production and and used to be a lot cheaper) to play with, and I have each key bound to something that is naturally out of the way or unused.

I put in a caveat just after my image, because... Yeah, you don't want to use the natural 'k' button.

I might rebind all my keys temporarily for a nice screenshot if this post takes off to cut down on confusion.

It's only kinda a game pad, it's probably more or a specalized keyboard. This bad boy is what I'm using now. I just say gamepad because it's easier terminology really. IDK why they're so expensive, must have been discontinued or something?

u/Sid6po1nt7 · 6 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I've had this thing for about 10 years maybe longer; it's the SteelSeries Merc Stealth. Reason I linked to Amazon is b/c they don't make them anymore & when it finally dies I will cry like a fucking baby.

To me it's hands down the best for FPS gaming. They also used to sell the Fang which is a decent substitute. Almost all the necessary keys you use are at your fingertips. I've been using this configuration so long I'm going to have to retrain myself if I can't get my hands on another one. Sorry for the tangent but I love this thing & to add this is not even a mechanical keyboard.

When it breaks im gonna be shit out of luck since they haven't been in production for almost 4 years now...

I'm using the Nostromo, having purchased it earlier in Beta for use in WildStar. I picked the Nostromo for the mouse wheel and d-pad/joystick.

I removed the stick and use the d-pad for quick-tap movements and strafing, while using the mouse for the rest of my movement, including auto-run mapping to a mouse button.

I remapped the wheel to be V forward, and F back, easing the vacuuming of loot and spamming of F. I press the wheel for G. (My actual mouse wheel remains the default zoom, as I like to zoom in and out often.)

I use the buttons above and below the d-pad for sprint and jump, though I am rethinking that as it's slightly awkward to do both. I honestly don't use forward on the d-pad much, so I may try mapping that to sprint... (EDIT: While reading my own post, I realized that I need to try auto-run above the d-pad, and sprint on the mouse. So obvious to me now!)

So far I only have abilities mapped to the macro keys, and I have keys to spare.

Previous to gaming with this I've been using an old Merc Stealth keyboard. I'm addicted to having a pleasant comfortable layout for my left hand instead of a cramped standard WSAD. Now that I'm used to the Nostromo, I'm about ready to look for a small keyboard replacement.

While I've had my eye on gamepads like the Nostromo for a while, I honestly probably would have stuck with the Merc for years longer if not for WildStar's unique needs.

Reminds me of my old keyboard which for some reason is selling for a ton on ebay..

u/nolowputts · 4 pointsr/pcgaming

If you're interested I've got one of these just sitting around that I'd be willing to part with. Its a solid keyboard, nice and heavy, I just prefer a more ergonomic setup for day to day use. Heading out to Turkey Day festivities soon, but PM me if you're interested.

Hi, I'm and old guy myself (44).
I used to use the Merc Stealth. It's got the wasd pad separate on the left hand side, but with bigger buttons. Now I've graduated to a mechanical keyboard. The Merc is like a WASD keyboard with training wheels. No shame in that.

I used to be the same way in BF4. I still have a k:d under 1 in that game, and I was almost lvl 130. But, I loved it! Now I love this, and I'm not sucking quite as bad. Just like you though, I'm having tons of fun.

It's alittle dated but it'll do for showing keybinds and layout, note not a healer class. I have 2 screenshots after this for healer stuff.

I try to make use of buttons that don't require moving my hand around. QERFGZXCVB123456 with maybe shift involved if I need extra buttons. I have a naga mouse with all 12 buttons bound to NUMPAD, so 1 on the keyboard is different then 1 on the mouse. Bar 3 are my naga buttons.

Bar 5 is hidden because I don't play my sentinel/mara enough to set it up. Basically it's a duplicate bare with no keybinds. What I would typically put on it would be cooldowns I want to see/know the time on. It's typically only 3 or 4 buttons that are VERY large. Anything you always want to know when it's off cooldown to use it.

Somethings worth noting is some abilities I'll always put in the same slot. For example, most of my characters (sage/sorc excluded) Q is always the spammable basic attack. T is always my interrupt. G is some AoE.

Shift 3 is typically some kind of USE item. Whether it's a relic, rahkghoul med, SnV shield, or whatever. I rotation shift 1-3 and shift 4-6 based on what I'm doing. If I'm pvping I swap them. (So I'm not actually using shift 4-6.)

Bar 4's missing 2 buttons are macrobinoculars and gsi droid. The exception being characters who have revive (or can stealth revive.) I'll stick the 1 or 2 revive abilities onto those buttons.

The empty button on bar 2 is an option button. Sometimes I'll have sprint there if I want to toggle it on/off, maybe I'm platforming (otherwise sprint lives on bar 6 behind bar 1.)

This character for whatever reason has an XP bar that's too long. I'm fairly certain most of my characters the XP bar is shrunk down to be as long as the companion bar.

B is bound to temp bar slot 1 to throw the huttball. (For the record B used to be next to V on bar2 when the temp bar didn't exist.) ;)

I'm linking this image because it shows my healer raid frame. I like to have the buffs small and the debuffs very large incease I have to cleanse a debuff. In this case you're seeing the static barrier debuff which is handy to know who can't be barrier and who can. Ignore the keybinds and the layout. Very old screenshot, not sure how/why I took it. Was using a very different keyboard at the time compared to what I use today.

For the abilities in the updated healer bar, here's my sorc which is my main. Oddly enough the screenshot has the same oversized XP bar. I wonder what was up with that at the time. All these screenshots are dated 2017.. perhaps that's when I took them so I could duplicate the ability layout across alts and I hadn't adjusted the XP bar yet. Like the above Sentinel, all my consumables these days are on shift 1-6. I probably started this layout on either my sorc or guardian and took this screen before I finalized everything.

Now something I can't state enough. Any layout anyone posted here is meaningless and worthless. You could have what's considered the best layout in the world and it's meaningless if you don't understand it, get comfortable with it, or know it. If you've had your stun key on button 4 for 7 years, putting the stun key on button Q all of a sudden is going to mess you up, put you at a disadvantage. So before you going doing a 1 for 1 of anything you see here, do what works for you.

I play world of warcraft with a left palm(no fingers) and a normal right hand on mouse using this keyboard: http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Merc-Stealth-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B00292OW1U

u/Largonaut · 2 pointsr/CatsOnKeyboards

Not a bad choice, but I am in a long-term commitment with the merc stealth from Steel Series. The right hand button layout hasn’t been surpassed by any other keyboard or peripheral for my tastes. Problem is they’re discontinued, and the resellers are cruel, cruel people. I’m considering having a reasonable facsimile made of that right side layout as my own custom nostromo-like device.

u/jschild · 2 pointsr/pcgaming

To be fair, there are "gaming" keyboards that have better layouts.

I got a Steelseries one on clearance and it has a "gaming" layout on the left side with completely redesigned keys.

It's actually a good keyboard, but not made anymore. The layout is much more comfortable as well.

u/Alexander_D · 2 pointsr/titanfall

See the table about halfway down this page. Unfortuantely your keyboard is not mechanical, so this key and your board are incompatible.

Surprised I don't see other people use this. I LOVE this keyboard.

u/RABID666 · 1 pointr/oculus

My favorite keyboard ever. WASD is big and easy to use. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00292OW1U?pc_redir=1397910994&robot_redir=1

u/SilverTabby · 1 pointr/Eve

Well that's a bit disapointing -- it seems like everything from Ideazon has been discontinued because of a buy-out by Steel Serries.

So the gamepad no longer exists, but the design is used on steel series stuff like this

u/Sicarium · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I would like to make the switch (ha) to a mechanical keyboard, but currently use a Steelseries Merc Stealth and realy like the gaming keypad on the side with the larger WASD keys. Does anyone know of a good side pad I could use alongside the mechanical keyboard that would be similar? I've seen a few like the Razer Tartarus and Nostromo but they seem to just have regular sized keycaps

u/f-r-iction · 1 pointr/techsupport

It is a steelseries merc keyboard, an EOL'd keyboard from steelseries.

https://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Merc-Stealth-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B00292OW1U

for example, the LCTRL button there appears to be defaulted to the LaunchCalc command if the drivers bundle isnt installed. They dont support that driver package anymore, so i get stuck with the formulaic Uninstall software/uninstall device/etc repsnose from steelseries over troubleshooting.

My computer has always had difficulty with the drivers (they were designed for xp, so like 7 years ago), and they recently died entirely on me with no amount of reinstalls getting them back up and running again =(

I'm trying to remember but I'm at work. I'll try to browse their selections and see if I recognize mine, haha.

EDIT: I don't know for sure if this is it. It looks identical, has all of the same functions, etc. I paid $79.99 for mine in-store at EB Games brand new. This Amazon link says it's $297.04 CND. Feel free to look around, it's called "SteelSeries Merc Stealth Gaming Keyboard".

u/SlarkeSSC · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Are there any mechanical keyboards that are set up like the Steelseries Merc Stealth?

u/DaenerysMomODragons · 1 pointr/wow

Depends on the keyboard you use. I use this keyboard, which has 7 through = directly above 1-6 on a side gaming pad. Unfortunately steelseries doesn't make this keyboard anymore, so they can be hard to find.

Personal selection has always been Merc Stealth keyboard: http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Merc-Stealth-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B00292OW1U
(no longer made so the ones laying around are VERY expensive)

And...

Razor Naga mouse.

http://www.amazon.com/Razer-Naga-Ergonomic-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B00E8CF268

Pros: Both have exceptional key mapping options(more buttons=good) The Merc stealth WILL change the way you play overnight. I am unable to use a normal keyboard after using a Merc stealth for nearly 10 years.

Cons: Both are low quality and tend to burn out after about a year.

Just an Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UH_UCACyDE - review of Merc Stealth in 2010 will show its MSRP for $100. I not sells 2nd had for nearly $300. If you can find one cheap buy it!

I bought one of these for my boyfriend a few years before I moved in with him and took it, so I'll likely be using the nice little gamepad it has.

Those are the two I could dig up, although the former isn't a shopping page, and the latter is /quite/ expensive, neither are mechanical however.

u/rgbaba · 1 pointr/DotA2

I do use the WASD as my stop/deny keys, which has been my main source of trouble in trying the transition. I have an interesting keyboard and mouse setup which lets me do a little extra, but I'll give edge pan a try as well as attempting the WASD method. Just feel like trying new things. Good idea about packing up- I just can't remember what garden it was. As long as it wasn't with Scalytails- I have plans with him!

Where are you? Over here piracy isn't really talked about but its done. Its just not SUPPOSED to be done. Since the NSA is all over our grills over everything we type now I'm sure this is being tracked. So for the record, I don't ever pirate anything ever winky face. But we DID just get fiber. And oh man, its awesome.

Now I didn't get a top of the line several hundred dollar mechanical keyboard, but I purchased the Steelseries Merc both for myself and the SO (both PC gamers- I'd also recommend watching the price, I got it for both of us for a LOT cheaper). I like it because its got a kind of customizable side keyboard so when I'm playing popular MMO it makes that a whole lot easier to play and use a mouse than the regular wsad setup. Plus it glows pretty colors. Bonus!!

Oh and yeah I guess the response time is better and all that nerdy stuff. Which is good, I do notice a bit of a difference there. But did I mention pretty colors?

I think I get distracted too easily. SQUIRREL!

Steelseries Merc Stealth my friend. https://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Merc-Stealth-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B00292OW1U

Best gaming keyboard I will ever use. The keyboard doesnt have the most modern features as it is 7 years old and was discontinued. But the ergonomics on the left are fantastic. My friends that play warframe say their pinky hurts from playing Warframe. I have no such issue.

u/CityOfChamps09 · 1 pointr/WildStar

This has honestly been one of the best gaming keyboards that I have used. I just bought the backlight Stealth to replace my 7 year old Merc board that had bubbles, soda, tobacco (I've since quit), etc all in it and it still worked.

My left strafing key Q kept getting stuck on the old board, so I decided to retire it in favor of the Stealth (backlit) model. It has two USB hubs, headphone and mic jack right on the board, media controls and brightness and changing color buttons.
