Well for the road you would want something reliable and not too big in size. I like to store it in the glove compartment so that it's always ready when I need it.

If you're on a budget and want to test the waters I can recommend the following -> https://www.amazon.com/GearLight-High-Powered-LED-Flashlight-S1200/dp/B074BT4X5H/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1541371002&sr=8-6&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=flashlight&dpPl=1&dpID=51rI946NgPL&ref=plSrch

If you want something high end which will satisfy you to full extent this would be what you want. -> https://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-75813-Stinger-Flashlight-Charger-x/dp/B0015ZO8VG/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1541371002&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=flashlight

Hope that helps.

Cheers

LEO here, If you're looking for your one main light and will be doing stuff like traffic stops, I'd recommend getting something a little bit bigger than what others on here have suggested. What I use, and majority of everyone at my department uses, is a Streamlight Stinger. Its just the right size to fit on either your belt or on your vest, if thats allowed, and they come in all kinds of various charging options and throw capabilities.

Whats important about having a light that size as well is when you're doing stops, you'll want something that easy to grab. Too small and it may be hard to maneuver. The stinger is perfect for throwing it under your armpit when going up to a vehicle and you need two free hands to grab something else or write down name/info. A small handheld light is extremely awkward to have under your arm. The size is between a small handheld and your typical maglight. The perfect medium IMO.

I'd also recommend getting a rechargeable version. The downside of that is if you forget to charge it then you're SOL, however most LEO's have at least a second or third flashlight on them, one being regular AA powered for easy/quick battery replacement while working. Develop a routine of always putting it back in the charger at the end of your shift and you shouldn't have a problem.

If you're set on something smaller, then I would recommend the smaller version of the stinger, by getting the Strion which is basically a shrunken down version of the Stinger. I use both at work. The benefit of the Strion over the Stinger is that if you're doing a building search at night and draw your weapon, its a little more hand friendly to hold, however the Strion isn't unusable in that situation either, just a little heavier.

Research both of them before hand as both have various version of themselves and you can get what works best for you (rechargeable vs. not)(DC and AC charging cords)(tail cap or no tail cap switch)(cone thrown and shape)(color)(battery type). All of those are things you can select on either model for the most part.

Hope this helps. The one thing you don't want to do is go cheap. Look for a major brand that most LEO's use, like Streamlight or Surefire. There is a reason most officers use one of those brands. You'll want something rugged and won't short on you when you drop it on hard pavement, because you will drop it. I agree with others not to look for something with all kinds of modes. The Streamlights do have various light modes however I myself use ON/OFF 98% of the time. Strobe can actually be a useful one for doing searches of confined spaces and it will disorient those who you may find hiding in basements, ect.

If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.

Buy this list and stay away from tool trucks. Good luck

I have several Streamlight Stingers in vehicles and have never had an issue.

E: I realize there are brighter and cheaper flashlights out there these days. I have used Stingers for years both in a personal and professional capacity in which they have been treated rough and relied on in emergency situations. I would gladly buy another one at $107 even if there is newer tech. They are rock solid dependable and have a life time warranty—which I have never had to use on the six I have purchased.

Bright, LED (higher power lower battery draw). Rechargable. And lastly maybe a plastic body with a grip thats ribbed for those oily inspections. I use a streamlight but its up to you
