without photos it sounds like you need a set of skewers. the two things to verify this would be if the axle is hollow (has hole for skewer) and doesn't extend beyond the drop out (no room to thread on a nut).

you should not need anything between the drops outs and the axle. axles are threaded for cones and spacers near the hub. properly attached wheels won't wreck the threads or drop outs.

best bet for security is buy a set of skewers that require a special tool (something like https://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Lock-n-Roll-Skewers/dp/B002K2IYPY/ref=sr_1_4 ). converting to a bolt on axle is possible but require pulling apart the hub cones and bearings to put them on a new axle, which can require a lot of effort.

last thought, check the rear hub spacing because it might impact which skewer set you buy.

I've parked my bike inside the Inman Park and Edgewood stations for about 3 years now with no issues. Lock your front wheel and frame to the rack with a large u-lock and get some locking skewers for the rear wheel and seat post.

I have had near misses of this. Loose quick release. It scared fOOk out of me. It's a common mistake many people make. The dropouts are often designed so that the wheel doesn't fall off EASILY but when the quick release is loose, it could happen. For me, the lawyer tab saved me.

So, I decided to get rid of quick release skewers. I also got a few security skewers so I don't need to worry about wheel theft on some of bikes. Killing two birds with one stone.

I usually slap on locking skewers on my wheels. These aren't great - you just need a 5 sided hex tool thing to take 'em off - but it does the trick for a few hours of Midtown and Canal st parking

I KNOW there are better seats/posts out there, but I really DON'T want to attract a lot of attention to this bike. Hopefully the inexpensive parts AND cable + security skewers will be enough combined with the U-lock and thick cable I already have.
Lol you would think it was a custom shop bike, not an old $100 Diamondback the way I have to lock it up to keep it whole.

I use Sunlite's security skewers and seatpost bolt. It has a proprietary fastener. If they have the tools to attack the seatpost security, they are likely to steal the bike too.

Get a good lock and you'll be fine. When I lived there I used locking skewers and a U-lock. I never had any problems, even leaving it parked overnight.

I would suggest getting a shimano HG-50-9 instead, since it's cheaper.

I would also suggest using locking skewers instead of normal QR ones so the thief would have to do a little more work or bring another tool. Not a lot more work, but maybe enough to decide to go for someone else's wheels.

Ive had the Sunlite Lock 'n Roll Skewers on mine for years. The key is the same for all of their locking skewers though and I cannot say that I have had anything worth stealing. Unfortunately I've not found a security nut for solid axle/horizontal dropout setups.

There are also aftermarket 5-sided bolts in skewers to replace quick-release parts on bicycle wheels and seats.
