So in 2011, DC rebooted their universe (by way of the event Flashpoint), and then launched the New 52 branding of their comics. As a result, any comic prior to that point isn't in the current continuity (there's a few exceptions, but aren't relevant to Supergirl).

So your options if you want comics that are in the current continuity are Supergirl's New 52 series or her current Rebirth series. The New 52 series can be bought as trade paperbacks (or if your library has a Hoopla subscription, you can borrow the comics from there). Her Rebirth series is currently ongoing. You'd want Supergirl Rebirth #1 and then Supergirl #1-4, which is all the issues that have been published so far. It's not required that you read New 52 before Rebirth, Rebirth was a soft-relaunch and you'll be fine starting from there.

For comics outside of the current continuity, her last pre-Crisis (Crisis on Infinite Earths killed Kara and she stayed dead for about 20 years) comic from the 80s The Daring Adventures of Supergirl is re-printed in two volumes, one released this summer and one next year, her post-Crisis series once she was allowed to come back has had a couple of volumes re-printed this year, a Silver Age Omnibus that collects a bunch of her stories from Action Comics was released this year (be warned, the Silver Age is very silly), and the weird-ass series from the 90s where Supergirl wasn't Kara is in the process of being re-printed. There's also the TV show tie-in comic which was actually pretty good.

Just be aware that comicbook Supergirl can be very different from TV show Supergirl.

Edit: As for Superman, the current Superman in the DC universe is actually the pre-Flashpoint one. New 52 Superman spoilers. Post-Crisis/Pre-Flashpoint Superman ended up in this universe as a result of an event called Convergence. Convergence is a pile of hot garbage and can be skipped, the important consequences are that the old Superman and Lois are now in the current universe and have a son, and they've been living undercover there for the past 10 years. Read Superman: Lois and Clark, then Superman Rebirth #1, and then the current Superman ongoing series - it's currently on its 12th issue plus an annual. Superman also stars in Action Comics (which since Rebirth has gone back to its original numbering, starting with Action Comics 957), but I don't find that series as interesting as the Superman series.

So what happened in New 52 is continued through Rebirth up until now and on. But there is a thing: at the end of New 52, a combined Superman story just happened: Final days of Superman (yep you can guess what it means) then DC Universe: Rebirth came then came the new Rebirth Superman title and the Action Comics. If you wanna get the full experience, you can start with New 52 OR just skip that, read ATLEAST Final Days of Superman then move forward into Rebirth. There is another strange storyline called Superman:Reborn that messed things again, won't spoiler anything else rather than the title. As u/colonyofcells mentioned, Men of Steel mini-series (6 issues) is coming at the end of May, if you wanna skip a lot of Superman stories (and Action Comics) then start there and move forward.

Edit: Also there was a story about Lois Lane and Clark just before the Final Days that is important regarding the continuity (if you're interested that much)

Recap

  1. New 52 altogether

  2. Superman: Lois and Clark

  3. Final Days of Superman

  4. DC Universe: Rebirth

  5. Rebirth Superman/Action Comics

  6. Halfway there Superman: Reborn (google it up after when it happened)

  7. Finish Rebirth and start Man of Steel (coming end of May)

Try Amazon, and MyComicShop (Lonestar Comics).

Alternatively, you could wait until September 6th 2016, because that's when the trade paper back comes out, collecting all of the issues into one book.

> Your looking for Superman Reborn, that'll answer most of your questions.

Looks like you're referring to this one, which will be out in September.

Since that has Action Comics #973-976 and Superman #18-19, wouldn't I want to read the Action Comics and Superman Rebirth trades before that (e.g., Action Comics Vol. 1: Path Of Doom and Superman Vol. 1: Son Of Superman and the ones that follow those)? Or is all that stuff just standalone stories?

What about Superman: Lois and Clark?

I could list pages of recs if you wanted it, but I don't want to dwarf you with too much material thrown at you at once. If I had to recommend one particular point though, I would say start reading around the beginning of the Rebirth era, with Peter Tomasi's run on Superman (first trade here) and Dan Jurgens' Action Comics (first trade here). If you want to read a small prequel on some of the events leading to this story, you can find that in the mini-series Superman: Lois & Clark, however that's not entirely necessary to understand the story. Also, it helps to have at least a brief understanding of the Death of Superman story-arc, and the single-issue story What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way? (Action Comics #775).

This era of Superman comics is fairly recent, and focuses on the new status quo of Superman as a husband to Lois Lane and a father to their ten-year-old son Jonathon. It finds new ways to challenge Superman physically and emotionally without getting away from his core character.

this video helps explain a lot of what you need to know.

generally all of DC comics take place in the same universe, and crossover from time to time. The best way to start reading is to just jump in at the start of a run of a character of your choice, or read some of the stand alone graphic novels.

For Batman I recommend reading the run by Scott Snyder. It starts here

Superman might be a bit harder since you've never read any comics before, and theres a bit of multiversal fuckery going on there but the best place to start for modern Superman (imo anyway) would be with Superman Lois and Clark

as a side note; what I have linked there are called trade paperbacks. New comics; single issues usually come out once or twice a month and what a trade paperback (trade for short) is a collection of around 5 or 6 issues which is usually the length of a story arc. Most series can be read from volume 1 and continue on to volume 2, 3 and so on.

If you have any questions just let me know. Happy reading !

Percy's Green Arrow, Tomasi's Superman alongside Superman: Lois and Clark and I'm waiting for Wolfman's Raven to come out as a trade.

With Rebirth I'd start with Rebirth Lois and Clark to get an idea of what happened to Post crisis Supes during new52. The Rebirth run of Superman and Action comics is so good.
