If you are mainly concerned with technical analysis I can recommend this book - http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0137059442 just remember most of bitcoin trading is sentiment based!

> I wouldn't recommend jumping into active investing with half of your portfolio as you mentioned in another post.

Yes, did not mean half. Just two parts, where the wealth preservation part would be the dominant share.

> Technical analysis is a type of trading suits people with math proficiency.

Very cool. I do have a mathematical background. Proficiency might be another matter. Do you recommend a good starter textbook that will give me some basics for this? Did not know about technical analysis before so looking for an introduction. I'm guessing it's all about probability and stats.

If anything, I know how to code. I'm looking to build my own systems to model this stuff.

> 5% of 'play money' could keep you interested if you have a high net worth

Absolutely, it's not very high. It's high for my age.

> The only piece of advice I'd give you is to stay far, far away from options.

I'm guessing it's due to the fact that you can lose more than the principal, right?

Edit: never mind, looks like there are a lot of well reviewed textbooks, like amazon.com/Technical-Analysis-Complete-Financial-Technicians/dp/0137059442.

The best book i've ever read for Forex is this: http://www.amazon.com/Technical-Analysis-Complete-Financial-Technicians/dp/0137059442/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1398231664&sr=8-2&keywords=technical+analysis

Very in depth and goes over a lot of detail. 600 pages of great info. I also have heard that in a lot of broker sponsored events that introduces TA trading, a lot of them recommend that book, and i can see why. The only thing i would add in the book is consolidation zones and better opinion on Engulfing Candlesticks.
